“Fitness you have got to build up over a period of time and we have not got that.

So why did Sarllz not get the players fit. Surely this is paramount?

Once Dino gets them fit, the Best Squad We've Ever Had That Was Ruined By Darren Sarll will piss it and we won't need to spend a penny.

To be fair, Westley got his squads very fit, but arguably they broke down a lot through over exertion.

Smith encouraged the players to maintain their own fitness. Which is like trusting a fat kid alone in a sweet shop.

Sheringham wasn't really fussed either way. As long as he could be on the 1st tee by 2pm most days.

Sarll got them fitter than they'd been under Sheringham, but that wasn't hard.

I'd imagine Dino will work to a similar fitness regime that Westley sought. So whilst they will have more stamina, we'll also see the weaker/older/really young ones break down more often, as is often the case with elite athletes trying to stay at peak too long.

Peak fitness isn't maintainable very easily, for athletes it's cyclical, albeit from a high base level, they work up towards an event, tail off to recover and then work up again for the next one. Can't do that with footballers, hence they break.

That's my view as a lifelong and very committed gym-avoider anyhow.

You're right about the athletes bit. I hear Michael Johnson and Jessica Ennis Hill talking about it in the tv regarding heptathletes who only have about 2 major events a year that they build (their peak fitness) up to.

Will be interesting to see how many injured players we get. We had a fair amount under Sarll.

I really hope that is not his main focus
Last two games at home that I have watched we just don't keep the ball and we do not slow the play down . We thwart their attacks and gain possession in our own penalty area and then balloon (hoof) it either straight back to the opposition or into touch. We actually seem to be saying 'oh bad luck old chums here have the ball back and have another go at attacking us'.

We need to play it out from the back - try and find somebody with the first (shortish) pass and build a bit of momentum and confidence in possession

Players need to be comfortable on the ball and they need to slow it down when we get the ball

So for me it is not fitness if anything extra fitness will just add to this 'Keystone Cop' approach we seem to have towards a football match at the moment.

Not sure about that - this was more or less the same bunch that played so well up until October with enough fitness and enough footy brains to achieve 2nd in the league at one point!

In fairness to everyone including DS, it was the start of the season that staved off relegation not the final run in. What Boro achieved between October and now did diddly squat for our survival.

You cannot lose talent or a football brain unless you get injured or you are so unfit you cannot perform or if your confidence is shot.

This squad was working under a manager who was in fear of losing his job...DS couldn't function properly under that stress. To try and instill the confidence in a squad under these circumstances would have been impossible.

What about GR you might ask? My impression was that he gave advice at matches, rarely getting too involved day to day so no help in instilling confidence. Now we have a tough guy in Dino, a GW with more compassion, lets see how he turns Boro's fortunes around. I genuinely think he will. Roll on next season!!! UTB

McKie has a footballing brain. Franks has one somewhere. Godden certainly does. The rest need to make it up on effort and attitude, and sometimes they succeed. So, I contend that the branes are lacking. I would like more branes. Why you bring up that fat drunk man I haven't a clue?? thank FUCK he's gone.

My post was in answer to your throw away comment "Football branes are sadly lackingin our squad".

You cannot wipe performance history off the face of this earth in a quest to vilify DS that is why he was mentioned. DS did more than an okay job up until October with the players we have now. This tells me the squad is pretty sound with all of them having a football brain each.

They have worked their way into a league 2 team not a Sunday League team. Agreed some have more footballing flair and some such as Wilko and Franks read the game well to be in the right place at the right time (well, most of the time). There are different applications in the way footballers use their "Football branes".

I am not a DS lover or hater I am just disappointed at the way it played out, similarly to many Boro Chat contributors, nobody would have been disappointed if he had taken us up.

However I am ecstatic about his replacement. COYB!!!

I think folk who saw more of DS’s teams than I did would find your comments implausible. DS, it was reported by many on here, was braneless tactically. The players implemented this.

As my comment had nothing to do with DS, I will again try and rouse myself to repeat that I do not believe we have many football braneiacs in our squad. Thems that have that quickness of thought and eye, they see and play a pass, or, bit more prosaically- they get rid of it intelligently.

Since you are obsessed with DS, why did they need to waste time on order every 28th minute? Time wasting should come naturally. All part of managing a game. I don’t want to labour the point, I’m boring myself.... but good players don’t need that sorta shit

On minor roads you do have traffic going in both directions.

With a bit of luck and with a fair wind the players Dino retains after the summer will give us a season to remember and for all the right reasons. I would be happy for Boro to be fighting for either an automatic promotion place or a place in the playoffs...and a decent FA cup run...no pressure Dino!!

Fitness and stamina is most important when you don't have the ball, to either move into a space to receive it if one of your teammates does, or to press collectively to win it back.

Technique and the basic ability to pass a ball is only useful when you personally have the ball. If you add up all the seconds that any defensive player actually has the ball under his control during a match, and the amount of touches, it'd be seconds in possession and double figures for touches.

Any central defender at our level with a remotely good touch who is comfortable on the ball generally gets shifted into midfield or moved up a league.

Let's face it if you were good at school at football, did you ever want to be in defence? All the good kids were strikers, the ok ones midfielders and the rest in defence, other than the really shit and fat ones.

They went in goal and got cold. Or played Rugby.

I liked to think of myself as a bit of a Ray Wilkins when I was at School mate - midfield maestro . Used to hate Rugby - it really required a lot of concentration trying to avoid the ball and stay out of the way of the big fat kids .

Think I am going for the GBP 99 Supersaver next year that way I won't feel obliged to go (or can just sit in the new luxurious bar/casino / strip club while the match is on)

Can we get our names on seats in the North anyone know?

I think players now have specific jobs to do, not just run around a bit. He can sure run around. But the gaffer wants intelligence too.

Sure didn't look like it in the 15 minutes against Mansfield at 1-1.

But when he first joined he looked the best midfielder in the side.

I wouldn't be disappointed if he was still in the squad next season, but based on what we've seen since Dino took over I'd be equally unsurprised if he wasn't and not particularly disappointed.
