Playoff format

As an IPL viewer I wonder if the way they do their finals would be better for the playoffs.

How it works is as follows. (Call the playoff positions 1, 2, 3 and 4).

1 plays 2 and the winner goes straight through to the final. Whilst the loser gets a second chance (see below).

3 plays 4 and the winner of that then has to play the lose of 1 v 2, and the winner of that game is who then goes through to the final.

This means the higher you finish the more opportunity you have to make the final. Seems a fairer way as the team who finishes in the first playoff spot might be 10 points ahead of the one in 4th playoff spot so deserves a greater chance of promotion.

Could get rid of the two legged semi finals whilst we're at it and have this 3 game format instead. Perhaps with the higher placed team having home advantage or at a neutral venue.

I think the team with the most away supporters should automatically go through to the final.

This would mean fewer live TV games so couldn't see Sky being up for it.

I'd be interested in seeing the National League playoff format tried. Same number of games but jeopardy in every single one and in theory more of an advantage for higher-placed teams. A similar system is also used in Rugby League.

That's certain an interesting format and probably is a bit fairer to higher placed teams.

My biggest issue with it really is I dislike the idea of teams who lose, in what is effectively a knockout competition, getting a second chance.

If you lose you're out, come back and try again next year.

Still, it's an intriguing idea and worth the discussion.

Yeah, if team 2 loses v team 1, and can qualify for final having played an extra game against 3 or 4, then players will not be at their best too

Plus 1 v 2 is another rematch of an earlier play off game. Boring.

I think if you're knocked out, that should be it
