Who was you expecting as Manager
Views: 1230
So, there seems to be a lot of pissed off people over the appointment, people saying they are done with the club etc etc, out of interest, exactly who were you expecting to become manager, what would attract a proven manager to come to Stevenage, remember were a still little old Stevenage, a small budget by comparison to most clubs in league 1, so why would you expect someone with a proven track record to come to Stevenage?
The timing was right for Evans to come to a club like ours, it was a win win for him, nothing to lose and the chance to enhance his reputation again with a small club budget
One of the most sensible comments I've seen was from Chuds saying our club would been seen as a step down by a lot of managers/coaches
Whilst I am not excited about the appointment, I wasn't surprised as I have been around long enough to know how the chairman operates, I don't attend anywhere near as often as I use too, but still attend regularly, I support the club not the manager and will give 100% backing when I do attend and will back the management team 100% until proven otherwise.
Next season was likely to be a season of compromise and trying to stay in league 1 even if Evans had stayed and who's to say maybe a downturn in form was due to his head being turned before officially being approached

Reappointing Alex Revell as manager feels akin to repeating past mistakes with managers like Peter Taylor, Paul Tisdale, and Wayne Turner. In my view, it's a regressive decision and a significant step backwards.
Wallace is taking a significant gamble here.

Didn’t like Taylor’s football but he was an excellent manager before us, and iirc has one of the highest win % any Stevenage manager has?
I got bored of football when we got into league one first time round. Now I have picked up an interest again I run a music venue so rarely get Saturdays free to go to games.

Same reason Evans did.
You can't ask that question then try to make out that Evans was some sort of weird anomaly.
I'd have taken any other manager than one who has already proven he doesn't know what he's doing.
If I'm wrong, great. But I'm not going to be.

i didn't say that at all, I said he had nothing to lose by coming to Stevenage, where as younger managers with a proven record, who feel they deserve something "bigger" may see it as a hiding to nothing and wouldn't take the chance of possibly failing at a smaller club

It was a win win for Evans to come here, but it was also proof that the club can attract proven managers, so after an excellent last season and couple of years in which our reputation and brand has improved drastically the job should be seen as a safe and exciting opportunity for any proven manager to consolidate our position in league 1 for the next few years and beyond … clearly the club have not pursued this option strongly enough and taken the very risky and extremely underwhelming choice of re-appointing a manager who nearly relegated us to non-league in the hope that he has learnt from Evans and is now a better manager than before. I sincerely hope they’re correct and this works out positively for Revs..

I'm almost certain that Revs talked a good game, and knew all the right things to say about momentum and knowing the lads. I'm certain that he would have interviewed well.
To me, it's another example of Phil's lack of football knowledge getting in the way. That said, his lack of football knowledge has also meant he's been relatively hands off, so swings and roundabouts.

I know what everyone is saying here. However looking at the list I knew who would or wouldn't come. Ainsworth has hinted he doesn't want a job right now. So we accept that. I wouldn't have been upset if it was him. Would I have wanted Bonner, no. Doesn't fit in with Phil and Leon for me.
Evans was a one off. Irreplaceable really. I'm pretty sure he'll be back one day.
Revs knows these 17 lads and he'll add 5 good players I'm sure.
Don't get me wrong when GW returned the 2nd time I was throwing away the ST renewal. What did I know.......
People change and evolve. I'm ready to believe Revs has and he told me some reasons he felt he is ready too and what he was too lax on the first time around.
But we will see.

Fair enough, quite like him myself, but I think he'd want a bigger/better option, he failed at QPR could have possibly built his stock again with us, but if he failed here possibly no coming back from that, who knows.
Tisdale was a good option and relatively proven at the time I thought but that didn't pan out too well

Agreed on your points, however he is currently out of work and if the club really wanted him and sold him the vision and direction they want the club to go in and then made him a offer appropriate to that vision and his requirements I have no doubt he would have come here. As it would be a good opportunity for him to rebuild his career after QPR.
The first barometer for me on Revs 2.0 will be how many, and who, of the retained players will still be here at the start of next season, how many will jump ship early with transfer requests etc.. also what calibre of player will he attract? If the close season works well for him then it might just work out and prove the doubters wrong..

Few things with Ainsworth.
He's still getting paid a Champ wage.
He enjoys his music and I think he's living a very nice life presently and isn't looking for a job.
However if one came along he'd want a Derby/Bolton sized budget. Which we ain't giving him. He was never on the list for me. I know other clubs have had conversations with him. Very short ones.

I think our poor form and second half of the season may have put potentials off. If we had finished on a high and good run of form in the playoffs people would have seen our potential.
Now they're probably looking at us thinking we are on a downward path and would be a tough job.
Revell on the other hand has nothing to lose particularly and know the squad already so for him would be a challenge he relishes.
And as for those already at League 2 clubs they'll be wanting to finish the job they're doing win promotion to league one themselves rather than a potential struggle at a new club above.
So all in all there is logic to the Revell appointment whether it is liked or not.

It's not really a valid point to ask people who we rather the club appointed because we have no visibility of wages, availability, interest etc...
That doesn't mean that we can't criticise the club's decision however. If I was going by a paper-exercise only, I'd rather us taken a random punt on some other unproven manager than reappoint Rev's. His track record speaks for itself...He might be a nice bloke that knows the squad, but you can't just "work hard on the training ground" - which is a phrase horrifically reminiscent of his previous stint - and expect to get results in football.
My biggest concern with the management team we have is the number of year's experience amongst the 3 of them. Evans has more year's experience managing first team football than our entire management team combined. Neil obviously has experience, but only a couple year's experience as an assistant manager. None of them have credible 'successful' experiences as THE decision maker at a club.
I'm not going to mindlessly hate on the club for their decision because no doubt there WAS a reason and I can't believe it's because Rev's is the next Pep after spend 2 years under Evans.

Good points. Answers well the sort of reverse-withering tone of the original post. It's pretty joyless to say 'little old Stevenage' can't do any better. We may not be attracting brilliant candidates, but we certainly can do better. I will be very happy if he proves me wrong, good lad and all that. But he won't. Cuthbert's appointment fills me with dread. He is a loser unfortunately. These people are kind of the anti-Evans - the reason the last 2 years was so good. The wise shithousery, the brilliant defence, the opportunities taken. THIS LOT IS NICE GUYS yes we get it arrrghhhhhhhghghg!!!!!!

That’s what I really miss about Evans already. The shithousery, the big character, the ‘them v. us’ mentality. No one likes us and we don’t care. Evans inspired the fight right from the off and all the way through. You *knew* he was leading the club, and using every trick in the book to do so. I don’t feel any of this for the new experiment.

The us vs them was also being manufactured by him to deflect from him being cautioned by the officials YET AGAIN.
He missed EIGHT of our matches through suspension last season FFS, and we won none of them in normal time (won one on penalties).
His wily ways may have won us some extra points, but his ill-discipline also cost us plenty of points by him being suspended, as did decisions going against us because of him (whether right or wrong).

Talking of Peter Taylor since his appointment only three managers have bettered his record...GW, Mark Roberts and Steve Evans. Football under Taylor was awful!
I guess PW must have had his preferred list but as Chuds says, maybe no takers.
We are where we are, managers never last forever so lets see where Revs takes us.
If it doesn't work then PW's hit list might be more fluid eg in the way we recruited Steve Evans.

That may not be how you intended to be received, but that's how I read them.
And we are perfectly entitled, based on what we do know, to simply not rate an appointment without posing a better option.
It's not our job to find or identify a decent manager. It's Phil's. We do not have the contacts or the knowledge. He does.
What we do have is a memory of what the new incumbent achieved last time.
FWIW I remain underwhelmed.

Re: Who was you expecting as Manager

I agree with both sides, but I do think it is pretty fair to ask who the poster believes should have been brought in instead when people slate an appointment.
You don't need to know every applicants, but providing some names gives an idea on the level that person believes should have come in instead, and if ridiculously unrealistic then said person should be SLATED from all sides, with the dislike button turned on just for their posts.
I, for instance, wanted Duff, Lindsey or Clarke, but knew they were highly unrealistic (the fact Duff has gone to Huddersfield shows we had no chance of getting him, whilst Lindsey would be an idiot to have left Crawley for us), so when we appointed Revs I didn't kick off and say we should have brought in other unrealistic people instead.
And as said elsewhere, I am certain that had Revs been top of our list he would have been announced immediately. To me the time it took clearly suggests we tried to get somebody (or somebodies) else and failed, so went with somebody who knows the club and has been heavily involved in the past couple of years of success (as well as some failure previously) rather than taking more of a risk on somebody who has never managed in the FL and who doesn't know the club. I am fine with that.
Edit: And there is also no way on earth that Wallace didn't discuss the feeling of the squad with Pidge and some other senior players. He always does. So those on here saying that all our squad will now be handing in transfer requests, hmm.

The odds on Revs took a tumble on the Saturday-ish of Cheltenham which would suggest there was some rumour occuring then.
You know better than me but odds shorten when money goes on?

No nuance here, thank you.
I agree by and large.

From memory, names I've seen people mention were:
McCann - at a bigger club already with Donny
Lindsey - too late too appoint if Crawley win play off
Duff
Ainsworth - thinks he's better than he is, probably wouldn't entertain little ol Stevo, the club with no ambition (quote)
Woodman - possibly, big step from conference to league 1, could see moaners still moaning
Cowley - already employed, compo pay out to get him,
Flynn
Garrard - Failed
Whether they were attainable or would be any better I don't know.
There were plenty more in the next manager odds market.
cant see Phil paying out much compo to get a manager

Half of those there is no chance we get, the other half I would rather have Revs.

Aye.
We wouldn't be willing to pay a huge amount to buy a manager out of a contract and those in a nice job at the moment probably wouldn't want to risk us anyway even if in a higher league.

To play devil's advocate, we've literally gone from someone with a proven track record. I think that's why people are questioning this appointment.

We won the lottery with Evans.
There is no one out there with a similar CV who would consider us.

yep i get that, but i don't get what people were expecting, do they have delusions of grandeur, expecting a big signing, when ultimately we are seen as a small club with a small budget

I understand where you're coming from. It's also that Revs has done the job before and he didn't do it very well. The appointment has people a bit baffled, rather than necessarily demanding that we should have installed Mourinho or Ancelotti.

People not naming names when they vent about this apparently awful appointment that is going to relegate the club, expectations have been high the season just gone, in my opinion Mr Wallace and the board would've crapped their pants had we made it to the championship, so this season consolidate and make do

I disagree that people should have to put up a list of possible managerial appointments. If people are a bit miffed by the reappointment of Revell, I think that's a fair enough opinion given what's gone before.

if people are willing to say the the appointment is wrong and the club should appoint this type and that type, give example of what they think should have been appointed, thus adding credence to their points

The real Martha apparently disagrees and is suing the writer for libel or something similar.
