So quite a simple one really, where does Evans rank amongst the best we've ever had?

Surely got to be up there with GW, and Fairclough.

Definitely GW for getting us into the promised land of the football league. Every club has that one manager they always go back to for nostalgia and comfort and ours is GW. Love him or hate him he transformed our club and is Mr Stevenage

1) Fairclough.
2) Westley and Evans on a par. The next season or two will determine how that one ends.

Evans is the only actual proper football manager we have had though.

I've forgotten many of these managers spells so hard to rank accurately and could certainly be persuaded to change the order, but in my time as a fan the following permanent managers:

1. Fairclough
2.a. Westley
2.b. Evans
4. Stimson
5. Sarll
6. Dino
7. Revs
8. Hill
9. Taylor
10. Tisdale
11. Sheringham
12. Turner
13. Sampson
14. Wignall (as never managed a game?)

Might have missed someone. Dreyer and Roberts were good caretakers.

Fairclough is our greatest ever, for that spell of four league titles in six seasons at progressively increasing tiers.

Westley second for getting us a league title, two promotions on the bounce, and five play-off campaigns (if you count the L1 one as primarily his achievement). Also saved us from relegation in 2002-03.

If Evans got us to the Championship, he?d be right on their heels - the higher level has to count for something. But for now he?s a solid third place behind them.

Westley just happened to be in charge at the end when the squad Gary Smith put together got relegated, with no time or transfers to make an impact

Likewise Gary Smith happened to be in charge of the squad Westley put together into the league 1 play offs, despite Smith trying his best to drop us out of them

"Westley just happened to be in charge at the end when the squad Gary Smith put together got relegated, with no time or transfers to make an impact"

Perfectly proving my point about how because it is GW everyone makes excuses and totally changes the truth. Everything you say above is wrong. GW was in charge for the entire season, including pre-season, with an entire pre-season and season, including two transfer windows, to have an impact, he absolutely was not just in charge "at the end"!

I do believe however he wasn't able to do much in the transfer window owing to us giving long contracts to the shit Gary Smith brought in. So he was stuck with what we had.

Then Westley being Westley fell out with everyone who wasn't his type of player or didn't buy into his out there ideas (e.g Haber) and it was a recipe for disaster.

I merely appraising his strengths and weaknesses.

Strength - building a squad over a number of years to overachieve on a modest budget.

Weaknesses - managing a team that isn't a squad he has assembled or in a short period of time.

You can't see past the red mist to objectively view anything when it comes to GW and Dino.

We go through this with Chuds every few years and he will never accept that view.

What can be said is Westley isn't a great quick fix manager, such as when he came in for the 4th (?) time and couldn't turn things around. It seems he needs his own type of player to buy into his ethos and methods.

See my above reply, he was in charge for the entire fucking pre-season and season, not for a couple of months that you GW-lovers always totally incorrectly claim.

An entire season is not a "quick fix".

Get your fucking heads out of his arse and look at what actually happened and how long he actually had in charge.

Yes, that's why I said in his 4th spell he wasn't a good quick fix.

And then said he can't do anything if they're not his players, which was largely the case when he followed Gary Smith.

But like I said there is no point bringing this up every few years.

If Andy is going to spout absolute lies about GW's spell in charge, I am going to provide the truth.

He did amazingly to take us up to L1, but he is also the main man at fault for our relegation from L1, and cannot be excused of all blame and it put on a guy who didn't manage a single game in the season we went down, after we stayed up with that set of players the previous season.

I wouldn't blame Smith for the relegation. Just that mitigating circumstance at the time that would've made it hard for any manager the following season with their hands tied.

When he was able to rebuild in League Two we then reached the playoffs again and was sadly not able to see how well the next season would have gone building on that because we decided to bring in Sheringham and ruin the next however many years of the club.

Still, we made an excellent choice in Evans and now in a good place.

I just find it funny how other managers get ripped to shreds if they don't instantly do well and get no leeway for not having their own players etc., yet he had an entire season and failed, yet still gets endless excuses made for his failings and it is all pinned on somebody else by so many of our fans.

A good manager shouldn't only be able to manage players who totally agree with them. A good manager can mould and adapt to manage everyone (or at least the majority). See what Evans did with that godawful squad who was dead and buried, in order to keep us in the EFL, for instance.

But yes, we are in a grand place and the past couple of seasons have been wonderfully reminiscent of 2010-12. Hopefully the next two years are not reminiscent of our previous second and third years in League One.

2 - Graham Westely

3 - Steve Evans

I thought Mark Stimson was a good manager and no doubt he'd have got us promoted at some time, if he of course hadn't taken the Gillingham job.

I'd have like to of seen John Mousinho become the manager once it was announced that Paul Tisdale had gone, with Mark Roberts as the assistant, as I'm sure those 2 would have become decent managers in the future for the club.

In terms of league finishes, Evans looks certain to finish below our most successful all time manager, Gary Smith.

Unlike GW and Fairclough we have failed to win a trophy under Evans. So he's not really in the conversation if we're being honest.

Steve Evans has time to become one of the Elite. Graham Westley got greedy, grass greener comes to mind. Mark smith had it on a plate but threw it away. Paul Fairclough got us on the ladder, therefor in my view was the greatest.
