Does he get bail then? Thought you'd be locked up straight away, not let to go home where you can then potentially flee.

Dani Alves just got sentenced to 4 years (was it?) but he's already been in prison for a year anyway!

Belgium, where Ilias was found guilty and sentenced allows you out on bail pending any appeal, and he has appealed.

Maybe he's had to deposit a significant surety to convince the judge to let him keep his passport and let him travel to the UK?

He could now flee to a country without an extradition agreement with Belgium. But for a short sentence I assume they've assessed the risk as extremely low.
