I'm so pleased we've learned from our previous mistakes.

One fucking garbage decision after another. Then we hire a manager who's actually been successful, and lo-and-behold, our fortunes turn around. So what do we do next? Re-hire the manager who was involved in one of our worst ever periods.

I think I might be done. I'm sure everyone will be delighted to hear there will be less of my negativity to endure moving forward, but I honestly can't be fucked with this any more. I need a break from this insanity.

If you can show me a post where I said that, then I'll concede that, but I think that's bollocks.

I was never a fan of the bloke, and I'm still not, but I very much knew it would likely be a good appointment in terms of results. I just think he's a vile person.

I was against appointing Evans until we'd given the less toxic Tisdale a chance, and given how that turned out, I'm withholding judgement on Revs' appointment since I clearly don't know shit.

Revs in his first spell lagged in win % behind:

- GW MkIII
- Gary Smith
- Wayne Turner
- Dino

So let's hope he has had the growth spurt to end all spurts.

He will also be aided by a coach who captained us to being saved from non-league by a made-up formula.

Revs is unbeaten as a League One manager, with a 50% win rate. Better than Evans.

A lack of experience isn't the issue here. It's the fact that Rev's last spell was so atrocious. It felt like every single one of his interviews was just "we'll keep working hard" ad nauseam.

No, he had no managerial experience hence similar reactions of lacking ambition, cheap option, huge risk etc.

I wasn't comparing the managers, I was comparing the reactions to their appointments.

I've no doubt many fanbases react similarly to certain appointments.

Maybe the alternatives were a load of Tisdales, and he was no better than Revell.

Given the dissatisfaction among Portsmouth fans regarding an inexperienced manager taking charge, like Mousinho, who nonetheless led the team to success, are you suggesting that Alex Revell has the potential to prove doubters wrong and lead us to the championship, despite concerns stemming from his previous tenure?

Not at all, we have very different target to Portsmouth. Success for us would be top 10.

My point was more you don't know what a manager is going to be like until they've been given the opportunity.

Mostly just the observation that the sort of comments are similar.

Of course Evans did have a lot more success along the way but you get my point.
Very few managers have success without failure.
I do agree Revell is devoid of success as a manager but lets see where he takes us.
I, like most on here, was disappointed when Evans left us then hoped we would get a proven manager.
This was not to be for whatever reason so lets hope Wallace has learnt from his previous mistakes and has made a good appointment in Revell.
Time will tell but in the meantime lets accept this outcome and try and see the positives.

Comparing Steve Evans and Alex Revell is, well… exactly the reason people are understandably shitting themselves. As some have rightly pointed out, with Evans still in charge we would struggle to do as well next season. With Wallace doing a mad Wallace appointment we are just pissing in the wind really

Today feels like a regression, with Wallace appointing a very inexperienced manager, after the progress made by hiring the experienced Steve Evans a few years ago.

I, for one, feel nothing but disappointment with this decision to reappoint the same manager who led us into a relegation battle.

Wallace, whatever your reasons for reappointing Alex Revell, I hope you prove us doubters wrong and that this time his appointment somehow leads to a miraculous turnaround."

He's managed to hold on to near enough the whole squad that got us to 9th.

1 - it didnt work out before having a nice to have young manager supported by a experience coach at the side

2 - when it goes belly up you revert to getting a more experience manager like Evan

3 - it is like Deja vow again, same scenario but 2-3 years later

4 - so christmas get a new experience manager in

5 - cant see him dominate the technical area like Raynor

6 - do you think he could change the dynamics of the game when things are not working out, like Evans did

7 - last comparison is when Westley took us to the play-off semi, and most fans thought we would kick on the following season, only to find he got replaced by Sheringham

8 - again we battled for the play-offs and then the manager changes to a less experienced manager

Cheap, and will be gone by xmas I reckon. Last time he was bright for a while but when things got tricky he was short of ideas. In his favour he has a decent squad to start with. It doesn't really speak of the Championship does it? But I never saw us at that level anyway, much as it would be fun for a season or two.

It absolutely doesn’t speak of Championship. If you put the footballing wits of Revell up against those of the biggest clubs in L1, I cannot see for a second how he’s going to outsmart them. 14th would be a good finish for us next term.

He may be the best choice of those who were genuinely interested in managing us.

Many managers would look at us and think we reached our peak, so why would they come in and struggle and harm their CV if they believe they can get a job at a bigger club who has a chance to make and sustain the Championship? We will be viewed as a step down for many. And would need to convince them we can be a good stepping stone to rebuild themselves, but that then creates no loyalty and they would be off as soon as they got an offer elsewhere. You wouldn't get that with Revs.

The vast majority of candidates would have been failed managers or unproven managers, who are not an upgrade on Revs, and could upset the applecart of our squad. Or managers who are doing well, but at a much lower level, which is also a risk.

It isn't who I wanted, I am not confident about the season (wasn't anyway, but now less so) but I am also aware we are sadly not the amazing job that many think we are.

All good points well made, of course, and I can readily agree with all of it. But isn’t there some small part of you that feels we’re a good enough prospect now to attract better? Maybe I’m deluding myself about our attractiveness, but I can’t help thinking it’s a weak appointment.

I thought we would be able to attract a proper manager. Maybe not one already in a job but pretty sure anyone out of a job (who has manager around this level) would jump at the chance to get back into management.

There's hundreds of candidates and only 72 manager jobs in the EFL.

Perhaps none of them impressed as much as Revell.

Arsenal have a serious amount of young talent. They could get great experience here rather than smashing peers 10-0 which does happen.

Only just read the article properly, and was going to edit my post .... Banfield will be manager in October by the looks of it.

Whenever I see Revs I always get the feeling that if I got a little bit miffed with him and told him to do my washing up, he'd do it, and dry everything and put it away.

Love the guy to bits, but feel underwhelmed as I have reservations about whether he is the right choice at this time.

I am certain the players love him and want to play for him, but am worried by how he will deal with a bad run and whether he can be ruthless enough to deal with players he is very close to in a more authoritative manner. And am concerned by his ability to change a game and how conservative he is (the two games at the end of the season were uninspiring). It also concerns me the impact this will have on our recruitment.

However, I will also add that I believe many of the candidates being discussed as potential new managers of ours are unrealistic and many would still view us as being a step down for them.

My final concern is about our fans. I truly believed we would have a big step down next season anyway, under Evans. But suspect many think wen would have been challenging again and so any drop will be seen as being on Revs and he will get the whole blame for it.

I bloody hope this goes well and he proves the many doubters wrong as I have never liked a guy who has managed us more than I do Revs.

Your point about managing a bad run is what worries me. If we hit a bad run of form or a sticky patch, do Revs and the coaching team have what it takes to change the teams fortunes? The fans will be on his back very quickly of that I’m sure. People love to say they told you so.

The coaching team also scares me a little - sure Banfield has coached elite players at Arsenal albeit during a period of decline. I don’t understand the point about bringing in coaches with winning experience as that’s not what Cuthbert had/ experienced during his time with us.

I’m not at all confident.

The assistant manager concerns me, I do hope the backroom staff are Revs choice and not PW's like his last stint.

He needs to succeed or fail by making his own choices. Not like the last time with the AM issues we had with Revs and Sarl before him. Mentors are not what he needs.

'The two games at the end of the season were uninspiring'

This is one of my main concerns. Can't believe how negative he is for an ex centre forward.

The Oxford game, bringing on all those defenders in a game we had to win, just to try and hold for a draw, was absolute alarm bell for me.

Nothing I have seen in those last two games has convinced me he will be any different from last time.

I'd absolutely love him to prove me wrong. He's a decent guy by all accounts, probably a but too nice for football management if anything. We'll need a bad cop in that management mix somewhere.

Nice bloke but I just think too nice for a manager . I remember once when Glen Roder managed West Ham , they had a great squad that got relegated, the players all liked him and they hadn’t won at home for ages . Players come out and backed him and said something like ‘ he’s a great bloke , hasn’t lost his temper with us once ‘ mmm exactly why they were bottom probably.

Also Oxford interview was the same as so many before, talking about how proud he was of the team when we were totally outplayed. We were playing someone 3 places above us , not Real Madrid .

That said , I think the decision is part of keeping the squad together and I don’t know what happens behind the scenes , he maybe an absolute nutter and grab them by the throat.

Still definitely behind him and I think the experienced coach is a good move . Plus as said by others , it’s important that we realise us being in the play off places is definitely over achieving so not to get on his back if we are not.

Whether he can be ruthless enough to turn things around during an inevitable struggle at some stage, and if they stick with him, is to be seen, but they definitely will want to succeed for/with him to start.

On what basis will we 'be ok' next season? Our recent form is poor, the league will be much likely be much stronger as a whole, he nearly relegated us from the league below last time and some of our better players may even leave.

I tend to agree...

Logic dictates, whilst looking at the bigger picture and previous track record (mostly guiding us downwards) that this could be a disaster. Last time he was in overall charge / involved at any level (without Evans) we were at the foot of league 2, for multiple seasons, there was a distinct lack of patterns of play and tactical niavity. When looking at the facts overall it doesn't bode well as we are now in league one, which requires a greater level of acumin. Tohave a naive manager that had us consistently near the bottom of league two is a big worry. He almost guided us out of the football league on 2 occasions before the directors actually used their collective brain and he was eventually demoted to actually learn to be a manager.

All the people on here who think this appointment is a good idea will be shown when reality hits and we are in a relegation battle by Christmas.

I really really hope I'm wrong and will be the first to eat humble pie... But, we have to look at the facts. Not all people make good managers and even then if they do it takes a while for them to learn their trade properly. Just Ask Birmingham supporters how they feel now, having appointed a novice manager!

I've been watching Stevenage for 40 years, and to be sensible I won't be renewing my season ticket now after this appointment. I'll come to games on a match by match basis and I hope he will prove me wrong. We were finally starting to actually build something good again and the club were progressing well with attendances. But if others feel the way I do with this appointment then they'll vote with their feet which will be a huge backwards step for the club.

Like I say I hope I'm wrong, I just don't see any evidence as to how a really poor, tactically naive manager who failed massively can turn into a good manager capable of managing a league one side within 2 years.

Hit the club you love directly in the pocket purely ovet the appointment of a manager you think might struggle. Really great support. Well done.

I didn't tell anyone how to spend their money.

People can spend it however they like (mostly), but I just don't understand people intentionally shooting their own club in the foot. It is YOUR club.

But then I go to games to support and watch my club, and any success or entertainment is a bonus, I will still go regardless, as with all of our previous shit spells. That is the life of being a football fan. The shit is just as important as the good, and makes the good all the more enjoyable. Some people view it as being an expenditure on entertainment and if it isn't entertaining they won't go. I don't agree with that when it comes to supporting your team, but that is up to them.

And it is funny that people were perfectly happy to renew with a convicted criminal in charge, but may not because a manager might not be as good.

Don't get me wrong, I'll still attend games, but the football was so awful last time that I think it sensible to come to games on a match to match basis to see how he does rather that splurge a lot of money upfront. if I'm completely wrong , and I hope I am, I'll get a half season ticket at Christmas. If we do well the club will get more money from me as a result, not less.

The point was more about the perception of the appointment and the impact it will have on the embryonic good signs last season, from an attendance point of view.

Well, I hope I'm wrong, I really do... I'll still go to all the matches ... But last time, under revell, some were so awful, and on a consistent basis that I just want to see how he does this time. I really hope he does well. I just don't see the evidence to suggest he will.

I wouldn’t say I’m confident. But the squad has enough about it to not go down. That’s “ok” in my book, given Revs has been appointed and judging by his last stint.

It is an underwhelming appointment but nonetheless let’s give Revs a chance now. Nothing we say will change it. Rather be optimistic than chicken little.

Congratulations Alex.
PW has had the chance to consider all applicants carefully and has probably sounded out others managers under contract too. So he has decided on Revs, with PW's experience of good and bad managers I can only assume Revs fits the bill of someone that will take us forward in his eyes.
Revs certainly has a big job on his hands, managing is completely different to coaching. Man management skills are one of the key attributes he must have which PW must now recognise he has gained since last being manager.Tactically I'm sure he'll be fine with his ecperience
working with SE.
Do us proud Revs, UP THE BORO!

Once again no ambition from Wallet.

Doing it on the cheap and taking us back to non league.

Does he not realise from past mistakes.

When it all goes tits up in October and he needs to get in an experienced manager it will be too late.

You’re very upbeat about all this. I’m now back in the ‘needing to be convinced camp’ at a minimum. If Evans couldn’t pull off a playoff spot after the season we’ve had, I’m not at all sure how Revell became the best choice to do so.

So assume you do not believe the reasons given for appointment by Wallace and really it was because it's a so called cheap option, just wondered.
Must admit I am surprised but prepared to give it a go , Banfield is a great coach plus with Cuthbert and Pidge around too more leaders .Thinking about it it might also sway some of the players to not seek pastures new given Revs in charge.

Obviously hope it goes well like all of us.

But, we were pretty bad the last few months and that was with what I consider a very good management team of Evans and Raynor (and Revs)

We have lost the first two and effectively not replaced them. No disrespect to Revell but he can't yet be considered an upgrade on Evans.

I was hoping we would hire another proper manager to take the group on in a new direction.

Continuity is all well and good but as I said will we just continue our form since February which was bloody awful.

Fingers crossed the squad was disheartened with Evans and Raynor and that's why there was a fall in form, and under Revell they find a new lease of life!

Cuthbert might be a decent coach, I have no idea, but he was the leader of the worst set of teams I've ever seen in 35 years supporting Boro. He stood out as one of the better players, but .... never got it?!?

Care to put in an extra million or two into the playing/coaching staff budget for next season then?

We had a summer splurge under Gary Smith after Westley left and that didn't exactly work out either.

Didn't Wallace do exactly that a few months ago? And we're also one of the very small number of clubs making a profit.

I'd hope PW has learned lessons from 10 years ago and won't invest in the likes of Morais, Tansey and Grant, but I can't imagine the board would appoint a manager and not back him now given the situation we're in

Last time I saw Scott Cuthbert coaching he was on the big park in Baldock, dodging dog shit with 3 under 12s who each paid £20 for an hours coaching.

That was only about 12-18m ago.

He must've come on a bit to get a L1 slot.

Which ultimately led to PW appointing Evans. I guess Wallace thinks this is the best way to get the best candidate again. Leon - "Yo pappy, mandem Revs gratuit and then the drinks really flow"
Phil - "(puffs joint) Sweeet"
