First time we have scored six goals in over a decade, since beating Hartlepool in September 2016.

The most we have ever scored in the competition (49 matches played). We have scored 5+ on five occasions, with three of them being under Revs this season and last.

Our first hat-trick in any competition* since Kurtis Guthrie against Swansea U21 in 2018.

The first time we have ever won at Walsall, in our eighth attempt.

Three debutants tonight too.

*HSC excluded :(.

I’d have preferred to have beaten Orient 6-1

Mellon showing you don't have to blast the ball to score a goal. Shows the value of just hitting the target. Wow this is impressive.

Houghton (for whatever reason) has been much more inclusive/adventurous with his passing tonight. Great to see

Playing alongside a class act like Smith's going to help, and the movement of our young and mobile front four gives so many options

Reaction to coming off at Barnsley won’t have helped one bit. Can understand being frustrated at being hooked but have to be professional about it. Use it as motivation going forward.

I didn’t see it, but what a result! And just look at that crazy list of scorers: HOUGHTON scores?! Who saw THAT coming? And new boys Marcal and Broggio making their debut goals for Boro - Marcal literally on his debut - while Mellon hat-tricks early in his Boro career. And to cap it all, Chem back in contention too. What a night!

Context is everything... and Walsall's mostly second string were arguably the poorest side I remember us playing against. That said, the quality of some of our forward play was awesome. I equally can't remember when we passed the ball like that. Comparisons between different eras are usually flawed, but I don't think we have ever had a squad as good as this one, with this depth. The competition for places up front has surely never been this fierce.

I agree about the opposition not being much of a test but we put 5 past Barnsley and had was it 17 shots against Leyton Orient (and somehow still lost). So it seems we are definitely set up to create and attack more now.

Hopefully yesterday will give them confidence to play like that against better sides. Just a shame a long gap until the next game now.
