Good luck to him. He's been a great servant to the club and definitely one of our best strikers in the Football League.
Can't ignore that his form has dipped over the last 18 months; maybe he'd work better under a different system or just a fresh start. Makes sense for both parties to move on at this stage.

Reading, Wycombe, Bristol... doesn't matter.
If he can be remotivated and provided with decent service we all know he can bang in a fair number.
Hopefully he rediscover his form, scores 20+ and wherever he goes, they get promoted so we get the add-on cash...

It absolutely DOES matter.
If it is Wycombe (which you seem to be alone in saying), I hope he never scores another goal.

I’m with you on that. But I’m surprised at Reading being interested in him, especially while his form’s this poor, I think of them as a club that’s got a bit more ambition and expectation of a return to bigger things. Mind you, not everyone on their FB page is thrilled.

You have to look at why his form is poor though. Playing upfront alone in a side that provides no service makes strikers form poor

I think a new start is what he needs. Something not right with him for a fair old while now. Cashing in on him is a good move for both.

His next contract he'll be 34, probably in the Conference leagues.

That is just an easy excuse to defend him.
Magennis seems to be managing fine with the same service. And Sanderson. And Mellon.
Because they actually bother to move and make runs. So provide a target and get service. It's very hard for our players to provide good service to a statue, especially one that is always on the floor or offside.

I think it's fair to say both arguments are true. Do we create enough opportunities? No. Does Reid create opportunities for himself? No. Could we improve on both? Absolutely.
He's never been the same player since his injury so I'd be surprised if that's why he's not making the runs he used to.

Re: BGR

Not saying we couldn't/shouldn't create more by any means, but saying he gets no service is just not true. And he has already missed a one-on-one this season, for instance.
Revs and the board clearly know that is our weakness and have made very good moves to sort it. Reid no longer suits what we need (Magennis to act as a proper #9 who can win headers and actually hold the ball up without his first touch bouncing off him ten yards and losing it, and two energetic strikers who make intelligent runs).
My view of him has been tempered the end of last season and very much this, where he has just looked like he cannot be arsed to even try, like he is in a strop, and has just been strolling about the pitch. That has pissed me off, and clearly many others based on the reaction from the away end in Burton when his substitution was roundly cheered.
As said elsewhere, a great servant for us, scored some key goals, but has reached the end if the line and for me is absolutely not a club legend, simply a long-serving player who mostly did well for us.

He's a confidence player. Unfortunately he has very fragile confidence. For short periods when things are going well, he's good. One or two errors and he's lost it.

Nah, Im not that cruel. 🙄
Last season. He was buzzing to begin with, then he missed a one on one with the Luton keeper, that would have put us 3-0 up and he went off the boil. Combined with some errors on international duty and he was done for....

Undoubtedly one of our best players on his day but are we getting the best out of him? Can't help but think a Stevenage team needs to be more than the sum of it's parts and there isn't as much room for players like Kemp. However, playing the type of football we do under Revs, there is a need for/reliance on individual brilliance. See: Phoenix Patterson. His set pieces are better and his goal contributions are more regular imo. More difficult, perhaps, for Kemp to find space playing in the number 10 position. He gets crowded out quite a lot, whether that be opposition shutting him down or a limitation on his part is open for discussion

Phoenix is an odd one.
He was pretty garbage yesterday and I probably would have hooked him off instead of Roberts, who had a very good game, yet Roberts provided no assists, whilst Phoenix provided two.
And it is those two assists, whilst offering very little else, which is why he seems to be the messiah who can do no wrong and must start every game.
Edit: Which isn't intended to be a disservice to his assists, if he does that every game I won't be complaining, and the assists for the first especially was a delight. I had the perfect view of it from the back of the Norf, Magennis just needed the slightest touch as the delivery did all the work.

Phoenix could hardly carry the ball and dribble when the pitch was so waterlogged so it did hamper his ability to take people on and win free kicks. or even knock it into space and run past people.
Garbage is a nonsense description of his game yesterday.
He's there to get assists and deliver crosses. He does that. He did that.
He's our best crosser. And can use both feet to do it from either flank.
He was decent yesterday.
(As was Roberts).

Yes, and there is always that chance - not in those conditions of course - that he will cut inside and launch an absolute pearler into the top corner, a particular characteristic of his that no one else seems to try much.

I was thinking the same, and even wanted us to hook him for Saxon right before he put in the corner for Sanderson's goal.
I guess we need one luxury player in the team or else we'll never score!

I dont really get the luxury player tag. He does the recovery runs pretty often.
He hasn't got Saxon's stamina or defensive awareness because he's focused on his strength which is going forward and creating.
But he isn't wandering around the halfway line watching the opposition attack us.
How many goals have we conceded down his side where he can be blamed? I can only think of one, from last season.

Yeah I thought the same - not much came off for him on the ball (assists aside) but he worked really hard, and Revell applauded him for his defensive work several times. Although he was the first to fall foul of underhitting the ball directly into a puddle late into the second half but we can let him off for that.
We definitely need a player like that who can make stuff happen when others can't - I'll put up with him drifting about every now and again

We have better, or certainly far more interested-looking options. Reid will be on decent wages for us. So we may well want him gone now.
He will want to extend his international career as long as possible and will know of he drops out of the fold he won't return, and is going to need to play regularly to stay involved, so may also now decide it is time to move on if he is not going to regularly start for us.
Or he may simply have a knock or be ill and will return soon.

Absolutely.
The other three options have shown everything in the last week that he hasn't all season, or for much of last.
Energy, interest, intelligent movement and runs, a willingness to get infront of a defender, an ability to control a football, goals, not spending the entire game jogging next to your marker and falling on the floor claiming foul to the referee.
He has been a tremendous servant for us, and gave us some amazing moments and the season of his career, but it is time we went our separate ways.

It feels to me like the things Evans and Revs pulled out of him that made him more than an above average Conference striker were intangible and have faded as quickly as they arrived, and I give him credit for the time he spent above his level rather than criticise him for returning to it. That's entirely separate to deciding to select him of course.

Re: BGR

Every season he played I said after the season we should release him and get someone better. Even after the L2 promotion year it was who should we keep out of Rose and Norris because Reid was the obvious choice to let go and improve on. Then he had a 6 month period where he scored lots and got into the NI squad before returning to normal.
Can't fault his effort and contribution over the years and no malice towards him, but he's never been in the same breath as a Morison, Godden, Hayles, Boyd or even Alford and Elding at their respective levels. File with the likes of List, Griffith, Newton, maybe Beardo.

No.
I don't know why, because objectively he really should probably be (appearances, goals, big moments, promotions and cup wins etc.) in the conversation of being a club legend, but for reasons I am not entirely sure on, he just isn't for me.

Re: BGR

The same for me. I think it's because the majority of those fifty odd goals have come in fits and starts and in flurries of 7 or 8 at a time, with a lot of dross in the middle.
I also feel like confidence is such an important trait in a striker and he's just not naturally confident. Revs and Evans have both said it and it's meant we've had to coax good performances from him, or give him a partner, possibly to the detriment of the team.
It was pretty telling how much more space the three strikers today created for themselves without us doing anything massively different.
He's been a good player for us during some great times but it's definitely the right time for everyone IMO (and he's below Beardsley for me!)
