Oxford Penalty
Views: 561
Watching it on the ET and having a pretty good view of it I thought Marschall had actually slightly taken out the Oxford player outside his box or at the very least on his line. (Obviously I’m biased however)
I’ve just seen the replay and it looks like it happened on the line. I mean it probably is a penalty and I don’t have many issues with the refs decision. However what is frustrating as a fan is every Stevenage player just accepting the referees decision. There was no desire to question the ref. Marschall just held his hands up and the defenders just accepted it No one’s questioning the ref whether it was in the box. I know the ref wouldn’t change his decision but at only 1-0 down you want your players to questioning tight calls like that.

You are aware that it being on the line means the penalty award was correct, right?
Edit: And there is zero point questioning the ref. He isn't going to change his decision just because our players say it was wrong, and it may result in a needless caution if he thinks the protestations are too vociferous.

“He isn't going to change his decision just because our players say it was wrong”
That normally never stops 99.9% of players throughout every game doing it.
As I said it’s probably a penalty. I just didn’t like the reaction to it being awarded especially as it was close to being outside the box. 1-0 down 85 mins gone you want to do everything possible to keep it at that and if that means protesting to the ref probably in vain like players are normally happy to do all game for every single decision made on the pitch so be it.

The story of the boy who cried Wolf will help here. If you appeal every time referees will shrug off the ones where there actually has been injustice done because we’re always complaining.

yes but the first few times the boy cried wolf the villagers *did* believe him.
So it worked ;)

Wouldn't it also put Marschall at risk of being sent off? Therefore no upside whatsoever

Yeah, dunno how he escaped a yellow card for the penalty today, but it would (should) have been a FK and red card if adjudged to have been outside the box (the line counts as a penalty). And we had made all subs so would have needed to put an outfield player in goal for the remainder.
It would have meant Marschall only missed the Reading cup game, which Barden may start anyway, so being only one down and him missing that would not necessarily have been bad, but having to put somebody else in goal for the rest of today's game would not have been ideal.
