Anybody who queried with me when I said all summer we would not score any more goals but would concede more (not because of Goode), and as a result would end up far further down the table.
The opening two games have done nothing but back up that view.
Our home form is going to be crucial to our season, and that was our first defeat on a home opener since the dreaded 2019 season. And against a seriously average-looking side.
Mellon better be a miraculous player. Sigh.

Considering we finished in the play offs last season and still had quite a few grumbles at home games because of the lack of attacking/excitement, it could get fairly grim this season if we're losing while continuing to not offer much

Imagine playing Jamie Reid for 80 minutes, him doing fuck all for the third consecutive game out of three this season, and us being "very poor in the final third".
Reid had to have a blinder today after being selected. He didn't. That is on him, and on Revs for his bullshit continuous blind faith in him. Sick of it.

Apart from the one on one which he failed to convert and the cross where the defender beat him to the header. Both came at 0-0.
To add, he doesnāt worry or cause defenders any problems. Thatās on him.

Something Iāve never liked about Reid, even when he was playing better, is his complete disinterest in chasing down goalkeepers, even if he is only feet away from them and even when the ball is being passed TO them and is quite interceptable. Heās always just stood there watching when he could be putting the keeper under pressure. Contrast this with (I think?) Magennis who chased down a ball to the keeper at pace right up until the keeper cleared it away, under pressure and with just inches to go before Magās arrival. So many times Iāve seen situations Reid could definitely close in on the keeper - and at least force them to hurriedly pass it or put it out of play - but doesnāt seem to want to. He just watches from a safe distance until the keeper launches it where he wants it, when Iād far rather he put in an effort to frustrate this.

It is noticeable that Reid mostly stands off the keeper. It seems to me like a half hearted attempt to close the keeper down as possibly instructed by the coaching team. However, it gives the keeper so much room, making his attempt to close down the keeper completely pointless.
Reid lacks any spark and dare I suggest, his reaction time is so slow too. He seems to want the ball placed at his feet for an easy goal to justify his wages. Did anyone else notice his reaction to Saxon when having a pop at goal instead of floating in a cross to the far post? Reid was a picture of anger towards Saxon! Saxon, by the way, was my MOM. I've said this before, Reid at 32 is past his prime and it shows. Unfortunately it is par for the course in football.

Their 2 CBs were excellent at managing our long balls.
Pidge and Freestone had some joy and should srguably boyh have scored or at least hit rhe target from set pieces. Pidge was inches wide, Lewis was several metres over the bar when unmarked at the back stick.
Maybe Pidge should be our last 5 minute throw of the dice emergency target man?

Unfortunately I am a bit tired of Louis Thompson. If I was an attacking midfielder I would want to play throughballs, and get shots away. Again it may be the coaching, particularly with the passingā¦. But I canāt remember the last time he had a shot, even a shot blocked. Honest lad but average at this level

I agree. up until 17 minutes in we looked very comfortable. Some nice passing forward interplay and movement around the edge of the box, albeit without getting a shot away.
Then Oxford bossed it till about 38 minutes, last 10 of the first half was mostly us too.
Second half it got a bit hectic and Oxford were simply better at passing and moving. We just lumped it for the most part.
Pidge allowing his man to get across him was criminal. He'll be punching walls when he sees it back.
I thought Kemp and Reid were off the pace today.
I thought Magennis looked decent again.
TVC, Lewis and Pidge havent gelled together yet. They are still 3 seperate defenders rather than a unit. That'll come.
Marschall's kicking was shite today.
Saxon was all action but no guile.
Houghton had a decent game, I'm not his biggest fan. But hes solid, zero creativity. Louis T was anonymous in terms of creating anything or carrying the ball into the final third.
We really lacked any clever play second half, no-one could see and execute the clever pass. If Kemp doesn't do it, no-one does.

To me Reid looks like he is frustrated and fed up all the time. Perhaps of being played as a target man when he isn't one and the long balls and no service. That results in a why bother approach, falling over and complaining all the time.
At least in the past when he wasn't scoring he would do everything to try. It's like he's given up hope.
Probably would have been best for all if he had left in the summer.
Maybe a goal will change things. š¤š»

Given that heās started every game and played the majority of minutes I donāt think the manager shares the opinion of the fans.
He has a respectable goalscoring record at this level (people really do under appreciate that even 10-15 goal strikers, including penalties, are not ten a penny). That makes him a saleable asset as Balders said. At the same time I donāt think heās ever tangibly been linked with a move anywhere from here. Our fans suggesting a bigger club may give us loads of money for him notwithstanding.
Heās one of those players who I suspect worked bloody hard to reach the level he did with us at his peak. Arguably heās scaled higher levels than his talent should reasonably have allowed. We love that here, itās a Stevenage trait. As a fan who has seen that graft first hand it makes it doubly frustrating to see him seemingly phone it in, strolling around and giving the impression of not really being bothered.

We are not going to let a contracted L1 Irish international striker with a half decent scoring record by our standards walk away mid-contract.
We'd be a laughing stock and rightly so.
If Revs told him it was over for him here he'd soon find another club at L1 or L2 level and we'd earn a fee.
He knows he needs to play to get more caps and I think he rightly really values the international status.

Put in a shift today. Did everything asked of him. Was underwhelmed by his signing when announced but has won me over inside of three games. Not a revelation but just what we need. Just need to get the rest of the side (one person particularly) working off of his hold up play. And to take him off throw ins.
