English born and lived in the NW all his life. As Scottish as Reidy is Irish.
Only Scottish from his nan as he knows he has a chance of getting a senior cap with them.

Being picky his Dad is Micky Mellon who is Scottish so there is a direct Scottish connection.

Wonder what type of striker he is. Good to have another forward option.

He's a lump. A physical centre forward who can play with his back to goal and is a decent finisher.
(Wiki)
interesting given he's youbg and has only played in Yorkshire & Lancashire apart from a brief stint at Dundee, that he's chosen to come this far South, away from his family and support network.
Do we have any other proper Northerners to look after him?
Big step for the lad.

Yeah, if northern clubs were interested in him it makes it especially interesting to know why he chose us. Did we throw some extra money at this one, do we think, or maybe our facilities/development opportunities/contract length etc did it?

Plenty of reasons for moving south, Jamie. Maybe his whippet died and he needed a new start.
Seriously, I suspect (without any inside info) that we have lumped plenty into this. He scores goals and, in theory at least, has masses of potential. I don't reckon he has come here to warm the bench, which has implications for Jamie Reid and, indeed, the formation we use. This just might be a Matt Godden moment... though I remember thinking that when we signed Jake Young.

Agree but think Godden was less well.know and came via the Vardy NL academy thing like Newton ?

No. He came frm Ebbsfleet, where he had scored a lot of goals.

If it motivates Reid to do better and keep the starting spot that's good enough for me. At least we now have 4 first team strikers and a bit of variety in terms of age, experience, style and profile.
Just need to give them some service now.

Given how exercised everyone was about our lack of striker options and how poor Reid has been recently I thought this place would positively light ip with news of a striker who actually scores.
Turns out the quality of the seats in the Norf is far more interesting.

I’ll wait until he starts a run of games ahead of Reid before getting excited.

Yeah, he seems like a good bit of business, (and I for one am positive about this news, Balders), but let’s first see…
a) if he makes the team,
b) if the rest of the team feed him opportunities,
c) that he’s actually any good at this level, and
d) erm… well, see above.

13 goals in 22 games for Morecambe at age 20 surely catches the eye. This has the hallmark of a serious signing.
We do specialise though in signing strikers who have had an an unsuccessful spell at Bradford City.

We've announced that he's under contract until 2029 - is that unusual for us these days? I thought we did 1+1 usually.
Looks like he has a good record and hope it can continue. We've signed so many forwards over the years that have struggled to score, so can be difficult to get excited about these things.

Been two years rather than 1+1 for quite a while now. We would struggle to sign good L1 players if only offering them a guaranteed year on their side.
We obviously think we can sell Mellon on for decent money, so are backing ourselves and him to do so with the extra year, and offering an extra year may even have been what clinched him joining us, seeing as clubs like Plymouth and Notts Cunty (plus Oldham) were in for him.

Yeah 3 is unusual now given our the past crazy period when we were giving out long contracts like sweets.
PS note he has been put since Dec injured, we.must have done our due diligence on this (I hope). Potential big signing for us .

He did his hamstring, which is why he was out for a long time.

Cheers dude not know the exact injury, so must have been a hamstring tear rather than strain, hence longer time out .
