We looked so much better when Magennis came on and went two up top, even if one was Reid. Ironically we had our best spell just before they scored. And that came from Kemp trying to win a foul rather than get his head up and cross it.
As against Wycombe, Reid won nothing, didn't even attempt to win the ball half the time (same as Roberts) and just sat on the floor with his arms out half the time. And whenever he did touch the ball it would end up with one of their players.
Really felt like a hindrance than a help. We had zero outlet and no possession on the final third.
Then Magennis came on, competed for headers, occupied two defenders with his threat, freeing up space for others. Held up the ball and laid it off.
I accept we won't get a 20 goal a season striker but what we can expect is a player to hold up the ball and retain possession and compete for headers. Magennis does that.
Sanderson also looks like he will offer more than Reid and Roberts. Roberts just runs away from the ball when it's played long to him.
I'm done with them two. It'll be a long season if they're going to feature prominently.

Can't understand why he is so negative, even against what is perceived, lesser opposition. If we had gone out with 2 up top and tried to win, I fancy we would. Last season proved Reid is NOT and NEVER will be a lone striker. Yet here we are again. Please can we play on the front foot for once??

If we play/defend like that against some of the better sides this season I can see us conceding four or five a few times, and very much not being in every game!
Very fortunate that Burton are so poor.

One thing that really winds me up about Kemp is his insistence to play for the foul rather than play the ball, particularly in promising advanced positions. Didn’t work there, they go down the other end and score.

And Jamie , goes down constantly when it’s not a foul and stayed down today whilst we were still attacking. Magennis showed him how to win a free kick when he bought a foul today in the corner. If Jamie goes down every time he’s unlikely to get anything.
Also , surely start Saxon LB and Freestone CH . That way Saxon and Patterson can be a threat going forward and Freestone can’t offer that . Plus imo it improves us defensively, because Saxon is a natural LB and Freestone is a better CB than TVC.
Pidge and Kemp our only good performers today apart from the subs .

It probably is this but at some point you have to take risks, particularly against one of the supposedly weaker sides in the division. As said above the league will be much stronger this year and our fine margins game probably won't cut it. I'd rather see us attack more and try to entertain rather than nick games like this but appreciate that's unlikely

I think it's one or the other (Saxon and Phoenix). Revs has teased us with the WB system and has reverted to the back 4 while trying to replicate the benefits of 5 at the back. I think this confuses players regarding their defensive responsibilities. Maybe we adapt over time and make it work, but for now I feel like we are caught between 2 systems, not really sure how we want to play and have no identity.
I have no problem with playing Phoenix, and I understand the argument that he maybe isn't strong enough to play LWB but sometimes you have to just throw someone in at the deep end to learn. Meanwhile, we get him on the pitch and he will continue to get forward with Freestone behind him as cover. What is the downside? This also allows us to play 2 up top and drop Roberts. Win-win

Re: Lineup

When we lined up with a four yesterday I was perfectly happy as I felt it meant we were approaching the game in a more attacking manner, with us reserving the back five for matches we expect to be more under the cosh and defensive.
If that was the plan, the performance didn't match it.

Re: Lineup

I see the back 5 as a more positive approach. It allows a CB to step out more comfortably and allows Luther in particular to get forward more. It also means we play 2 strikers. We were all over the place yesterday and we generally are unable to build up from the back or play through the lines. Get more bodies in the final third if we are going to persist with a more direct approach or rely on winning it back high up the pitch.
If we stick with the 4, we need a proper target man and clear roles for the midfield 2 + Kemp. Roberts needs to offer more and we need to cut out the errors at the back.

Re: Lineup

Nail on the head I’d say. I also think there’s an element of wanting to keep Freestone in the team to keep him happy and as the player who looks like Pidge’s long term successor he’ll learn more on the pitch than off it. Especially playing alongside Pidge, albeit at full back.
That’s the human element. It plays a bigger part than many think. Of course we could have dropped half the squad from the Wycombe game but it would only have caused unrest. Unrest has further reaching consequences for our overall performances.
I think Revs is a very good people manager. In the way that good people managers operate in 2026, not sending people to Siberia if they don’t perform. He also wants to protect the culture at the club. That is so important. Perhaps if we’d retained a few other players who left in the summer then we’d have moved a Roberts on for example. Frustrating that he continues to pick him but I can see why he was kept in the building. It’s also why we went for TVC in the transfer market. He gets it here. Less of a bedding in process.
For me this may be a transitional season, phasing him (Roberts) out and Campbell in (once fit) for example. This is possibly what we’re seeing with Phoenix being a starter for our first two games also.
Individual moments and marches are important of course but the season has to be taken as a whole. No good alienating half the playing staff after two games when you have to have them on side for 50+ matches in all competitions.
(Sorry Owen, went off on a bit of a tangent there).

Re: Lineup

Valid points.
I did make the point in the car home yesterday that much as Roberts does my head in, I could see a world where him, Magennis and Kemp works, where Reid in the same way doesn't. Roberts has decent pace over ten yards, so if he plays on the shoulder and Magennis can win some flick-ons, Roberts could be clean through, similar to our goal yesterday. Or Kemp is in the hole to pick up any knock-downs, or balls the defender wins the header but is at least challenged by Magennis (unlike Reid) so has less control over where the header lands.
For me, Magennis HAS to start over Reid at the weekend. I would also not start Roberts, but wouldn't be as against him starting, if the above happens. Magennis has earned it with two goal contributions in two games, and it gives a message to Reid that he has to he better. He isn't going to give us 90 mins every week, but I am sure he can give us an hour and then be replaced by Reid/Sanderson/Roberts/Malcolm.
I expect our fans, especially at home, to be a lot more vocal about things this season, and if Revs continues to persevere with underperforming and undeserving players, I reckon he is going to hear it quite clearly from a lot of people this year, moreso than last.

I’m not necessarily going to make the case either way for Roberts, but wasn’t there a period last season where he was hopeless and underperforming, and not playing much, but when he came back into the team we suddenly looked stronger and more attack minded? I seem to recall that being discussed at the time, that maybe he brings something undefinable. I’m agnostic on Roberts. Can’t see what he does when he’s on the pitch but strangely still feel like he’s a useful tool on his good days.

Re: Lineup

That was when Roberts came back in at left midfield/wing back IMO and did play well, but as we all know his problem is consistency and when he's not at it - like yesterday - he is probably a detriment to the team, although he does still wins us free kicks.
On the other hand when Reid isn't scoring he offers literally nothing and is the equivalent of playing with 10 men. He's living off brief flurries of scoring goals and his penalty record, and while I get that he's a confidence player, we shouldn't have to put in the amount of work we do to create conditions where he feels confident enough to score. Yesterday was one of the laziest performances I've seen in a long time from a Boro forward which is inexcusable with the way we play and the role our striker needs to play. Revell must see this too

Given how much emphasis Revell puts on the collective, our energy and our drive, I'm gobsmacked he doesn't hook and drop Reid more often. At least Robbo gets dropped occassionally.
Yesterday's type of performance isn't even that unusual.for Reid. Almost sulky the way he moved around the pitch and didnt bother competing.
we can *all* see it.

We also know that he is feeding off scraps at best. There is little to no creativity in the way we play and he needs to get on the ball in and around the box to have any chance of scoring. Give him a strike partner and I think you still get some value from Reid. However, I cannot excuse his pathetic attempts to compete with their defenders yesterday. It was a physical game and he was trying to buy fouls by pinning himself against the defender and falling over when the ball came towards him. Embarrassing.

Re: Lineup

Reid's best season by far was playing alongside Hemmings. He has none of the attributes needed to play as a lone 9. He is a different proposition playing in a front two, but to keep him in we have to change the system. He won nothing at Burton, and mainly ended up on the floor. If one up top remains Rev's preferred option, Reid has to be dropped. Every time we played it up to him or Roberts we gave possession away. If they had been better in the final third we would have lost by two or three.

Phoenix was anonymous. Will give him the benefit of the doubt to a certain extent as we didn’t play to his strengths. Feel like he’s under the microscope a little though as so many have put him on a pedestal without much to back it up besides some pizza trophy goals last season.
Roberts is the one for me. His time should have been up in the summer. The more we see the fewer redeeming features there are.
With Reid (and I say this with no way of knowing other than watching him play) I always think a lot rests on where his head is at. The longer he has to think the less effective he is, if he’s in a drought he’ll overplay in possession to the detriment of the team. Sometimes he looks disinterested (again, something that’s a lot more regular sadly). Get his head in the right place and he can be a half decent scorer again. It’s a big if though.

You're right, but as said above I don't know why we need to put in so much work to get Reid's head in the right place. He's a 30+ year old professional footballer who's been around the block a long time now. If he doesn't want to try unless someone pats him on the back and makes him feel good then that should be his problem and not ours

Patterson would be better if the forwards could hold the ball up and play him in. Long balls to him are pointless.
When he did get on the ball he put a few good crosses in, but largely had two players on him and not much sight of the ball.
I feel like Revs has some work to do to find the best way to get our threatening players into matches.
Was pointless playing Patterson today the way we were playing.

Absolutely. If we want to be direct and play Phoenix and Kemp in particular we need that hold up man they can run on from. That could be Magennis. We’re probably easing him in, we also have to make sure we don’t run him into the ground at his age.
Perhaps we should be in the market for another player of a similar ilk who can share the minutes and hard graft of the target man with him.

Re: 1-1

With regards to us struggling a lot more than last season you mean?
Mostly the fact the rest of the league will be much stronger than last season. The sides coming up and coming down are stronger than those going the other way, and those who fell just short last season (Plymouth, Luton, Huddersfield) also being much stronger.
I expect us to be mostly the same as last season, but as a result of the above I expect us to concede more, so we will therefore need to score more to pick up points, which I don't expect us to do (certain player decisions by Revs will either help with or worsen this).
So much of our success last season was based on those 1-0 wins. Replace just a couple or few of those with a draw or defeat, and those lost points will drop us down the table quite a bit.
I desperately hope I am wrong, but today did not create any thought that I am.

Yeah, similar to my take. My view is the lack of goals and the reliance on the defence will kill us in the long run. You can’t score that few goals and expect to be near the top end of the table on a regular basis. Only three teams scored less goals than us last season and they were the bottom three. Will also impact attendances but that’s another conversation.

He is living on past glories and penalties, and offers nothing whatsoever to warrant a starting place.
Likewise Roberts. Having those two as our starting options every game will see us relegated. Today has been fucking horrendous.

Today was the straw that broke my back after about 18 months of the same sort of performance.
I get the argument about him not suiting being a lone striker, and we absolutely could help him in that regard, BUT we are entirely based on working as a team and all grafting for the greater good. Too often he strolls around and doesn't graft for the team (not challenging/half-heartedly challenging for balls that basically land on his head and throwing himself to the floor pathetically for instance) which makes it harder for the rest of the team because we lose possession instantly and the ball just keeps coming back at them immediately, and too easily.
Magennis today showed what he should be doing. Hopefully having him around means Reid gets dropped. Even if not every game, it may act as the kick up the arse he needs that he isn't going to just be picked to start every week, regardless, which has been part of the problem last season.
Edit: And pretty much everybody I could hear on the away terrace today, in two totally separate areas of it, was all saying the same thing, was exasperated by his "performance", and there was a big cheer when he got substituted off (I suspect why he was then nowhere to be seen at FT). He has been a great servant for us, he still could be, but something needs to change in his attitude/approach, because it just isn't doing it right now.

We’re not doing well here though. Keep lumping it forward and losing the physical battle. Massive hole in the centre of the park too. Route one isn’t the way to go with Kemp and Phoenix in attack.

As I said that's why you start with the Taylor, Earley that can actually keep the ball.

The players on the pitch can do it, they just aren’t and that comes from the manager. We’ve had a very brief spell there where it wasn’t just punted forward and we looked much better for it. I’d like to think Revs will be telling them just that and adjusting accordingly at half time. Whether he does or not is another matter. If we are going to persist with the lump it forward plan then Magennis is our man.

Unforced errors from Pidge (2), TVC (1), Freestone (1) and Dan Phillips (2) resulting in turnovers in our defensive third.
We look shaky.
Midfield isn't working Louis and Dan P second to way too much.
Freestone isn't a LB, limits our forward movement down his side far too much. I know hes solid usually which Frees up Pheonix but against shit.teams like Burton I'd like to think we can trust Saxon.
Hopefully we can improve and snatch a 0-1 late on.

If the average fan can see it, why can't our management team?

Revs out , thought I would get that in now to annoy those who are primed to do so.
