That felt like quite an even game last night. I thought we were broadly fine. We can build on that win, blood in the newbies more over the next few games and we might have a decent squad we can rotate, etc.
Magennis will be pleased with his debut! I wonder if we'll look to go two up top at some points, probably at home, this season. I'm sure they'll rotate more up front with Jamie Reid getting more rest. Hopefully a fresher Reid will be a sharper one.
Good win, always feels great to nick an injury time winner. Up the Boro!

Revs will generally only go for a genuine front 2 when we are losing. I know he's did it a bit last season but he rarely drops Roberts and clearly thinks Pheonix is a key player.
seems to me we have 4 options at least in that 10 slot roaming behind and backing up the striker in the press...
Roberts can press and play behind a striker but goes missing a lot and Revs likes him wide.
Terry Taylor looks quite attacking and intelligent.
Dan P has the energy for the press and to drop and help out.
Dan K has the flair and intelligence.
Not sure where Sanderson fits? Maybe also a 10?
The two Dan's work well together when we go forward and press. For me the attacking midfield 8/10 pairing role is theirs to lose Can't play them both with 2 strikers and 2 wide men.
My conclusion, probably wrong, is that Revs wont play 2 strikers very often.

I think you're probably right. Especially if we default to three at the back, Revs will want to make sure the midfield will work and that won't involve sacrificing a body in there for a striker

A lovely afternoon and evening out in Wycombe.
Wandered about some caves, had a couple of beers and good food in a lovely country beer garden, and we beat those dickheads with a last minute winner.
First time we have ever won in normal time in the League Cup or FA Cup under Revs, after 13 attempts. First time we have won away in either competition under him too, albeit only fourth attempt.
Roberts' 200th appearance for us tonight.
Chelsea or Spurs away in R2 please for the money.

Reidy will get a hard time, but he's not and never has been a no9 He's like a hybrid winger/no10.
I'll never know why Revs persists with Reidy as a targetman. He needs a proper number 9 to play off. Low and behold, we have one in Josh Magennis!

I do agree with that analysis, but regardless of that, his touch, decision making, confidence and possibly even fitness look questionable.
As always, when it's not instinctive and he has time to think, if often doesn't end well.

I really enjoyed that. I really like the look of Taylor - wanted the ball & look assured when he had it. Magennis is a beast & looks really strong. Sanderson put himself about much more than Roberts did.
Phillips had a great game but Phoenix was my MotM.
Wildin struggled up against a tricky winger but did well for the most part.
A lovely way to start the season!

The trouble is, I don't think Revs trusts Phoenix to play wing back, so won't play if we play 3 centre backs. This means Freestone is out of position at LB. It's a puzzle for sure, I'd like to see Phoenix play more too, he's very exciting

Phoenix can play off the right and Earley on the left - he's right footed so would surely be better playing on his natural side. Unless the aim is to make the pitch even narrower than we already do. With that we have four defenders on the pitch, likely with two defensive midfielders in front of them, so we can probably afford one of the wing backs to push forward and be more adventurous.

Decision making needed work. Not good enough defensively. Can’t play someone solely because they can put in a good dead ball. His attacking qualities are unquestionable though as is the set piece delivery. Think the reasoning behind playing Freestone at LB tonight was his discipline allowing Phoenix to do his thing.
We can (doesn’t mean we will) play with a bit more of a free hand from day one this season. Hopefully that means a little more freedom for the likes of Phoenix and Kemp to play on the front foot. Magennis could be just what we need to help enable that, get the attacking midfielders running on from him.

The last paragraph is it. Not expecting goals galore from him although it was nice to have someone other than Pidge threatening from a corner.
Having a hold up man gives the attacking midfielders the opportunity to run on that they’ve not had before. Not getting carried away and I’d love more pace in transition still but it can’t hurt having another string to our bow potentially.

Good to see a proper game so I can assess.
I like Kemp, Phillips and Thompson as the midfield three.
Phoenix gives us something different with pace going forwards.
Reid is absolutely diabolical. Roberts is a 1 in 10 games player.
Not convinced by TVC or the shape of the back line. Luther has struggled in it. But we'll see. Might have been to counter their threats down the wing.
Haven't seen enough of the new players to form a view yet.

Tvc will hopefully grow. Not his best game, but solid enough.
I'd start at Burton the exact side that finished the game..
Saxon is a much better all round full back. Taylor looks better on the ball in midfield and Reid and Roberts just don't deserve to be out there.

Wasn’t overly fussed by the Magennis signing initially but think he could play a big part in unlocking goals from our 10 and wingers this season. Better hold up player than Reidy if this brief cameo is anything to go by.

As of now it looks more of a “fluid” 4-5-1, Freestone left back with Phoenix occasionally dropping in. Thompson and Kemp sitting back/advanced respectively and Phillips moving between the lines. Not sure if it’s by design or not but Roberts is generally much higher on his flank than Phoenix is on his.
My early concern won’t come as a surprise. Chance creation looks on par with last season. Hopefully that’ll change.
