Nothing to get excited about... same issues, new season.
Preseason or not, today didn't alleviate my concerns for the season.
Colchester are League Two and skybet have them 18/1 for the season. They had a player sent off on 19 minutes and the only goal we scored was a penalty from that.
Phoenix looked lively, but creativity and goal threat remains a major major concern.
New signings looked ok when they came on.
I honestly don't know who the best XI is. I hope Revs doesnt think it is the guys who started today.

Was about to post the same. Still not scored from open play and couldn't add to a penalty against a side from the League below, at home, against 10 men for 75 minutes. Can't see anything other than a long season of struggle, boring football and dwindling crowds.
Prove me wrong Boro.
The Burton game already feels like it will be massive in deciding how our season pans out. The Blackpool game last year gave us so much confidence to carry into the first few weeks. Hopefully a win at Burton would do the same.

The level of pant wetting really is laughable. If we can't be positive/optimistic before the season has even started then what even is the point? Might as well give up our membership to the league now out of total embarrassment!
Please can we give it at least a month or 2 before this kind of negativity creeps onto the ET? Our support might just be what the team needs to push them to better performances/results and could make a massive difference to our start to the season and momentum

There is always negativity, it is always louder than anything else.
The way we choose to play won’t endear many, we know that from last season when a play-off finish was still met with misery in many quarters. We punched above our weight. The league is stronger this time around and we have lost two of our best players without adequately replacing them. To expect growth in terms of league position would be misguided.
We should all be long enough in the tooth to not put too much stock into pre-season yet also not completely ignore it.
For me, it’ll be more of the same in terms of playing style without the same high final position. Mentality will be huge in the squad and management. How they handle the boo boys if (when) they come out in force following a couple of bad results and performances could be crucial. How we start really could set the tone.

Completely agree. And I know I shouldn't get drawn into it, but certain posters will take any opportunity to have a moan and it gets tiresome. Just give it a rest. I get equally frustrated with supporters at the other end of the scale who believe that the club can do no wrong and everything is the BEST and BIGGEST in our history.
I appreciate debate and different opinions, but I would urge people to only speak when they have something (preferably new and backed up) worth saying

Sanity at last. We have lost two players from the squad that finished sixth last year. I would have liked to have kept Charlie, though TVC is a very decent replacement, don't much care about White. The negativity on here is bizarre.

Said it before and will say it again, White is a much bigger loss than Goode. We didn’t score many last season and Harvey was joint second for goal involvements I believe. We still managed to keep things tight at the back when Charlie wasn’t around.

We can agree to disagree on that. I am not denigrating Harvey's contribution, but it would be remarkable if his stats weren't good given that he had control of virtually every set piece. Phoenix may replace, or even improve on, that particular skill.

Phoenix would have to be starting every week in that instance. I’m not sure that will be the case. The potential is there for sure but lots of work for him to do to be a regular starter for me.

Kemp was quiet last season. Before that he was creating plenty.
Now White has gone, Dan's time to dstep back up and own that creative slot.

I really rate Kemp but think he was a bit of a square peg in a round hole last season. We’re a very workmanlike side and he’s at his best when the team is set up to serve him. He isn’t a winger, he goes looking for the game too much when out wide (Ben Kennedy but better) and isn’t quick enough. He’s wasted there. Harvey’s goal involvements were similar while doing all the dirty work a centre mid has to do (granted he was on set pieces too).
We need to find a way to make Dan work in the system. That way could be trying to use him as Harvey’s replacement but it’s risky. He has all the technical ability to pull strings. He’s not as physical but his ball retention makes up for that, especially if deployed beside someone who does the nitty gritty and breaks up play. He’s also no shrinking violet, he does get stuck in.
It may sound crazy but I’d love to see what it looks like with Houghton (or Thompson) next to Kemp in the middle of the park, the destroyer and the creator with Dan Phillips in front of them. Not quite a number 10 but pressing with intensity and less likely to drop a clanger if he does lose a risky ball (see Stockport at home). That’s if we continue with a 4-3-3 of sorts. I doubt it will happen and may not work at all but I think if Kemp’s up to the rigours of centre mid it could be an interesting proposition.
