Northern Ireland forward Josh Magennis has joined League One outfit Stevenage, in a move that will keep him in the international reckoning.
International boss Michael O’Neill is reluctant to select players who ply their trade in League Two, with Gillingham striker Ronan Hale and Chesterfield forward Lee Bonis both impacted by the unofficial selection policy.
Last season, Bangor man Magennis was part of the Exeter City squad that was relegated to League Two from League One on the final day of the season. However, the move to Alex Revell’s Stevenage will keep him in English football’s third tier.

Because, despite you saying people say it every year regardless of the situation, the league is without question going to be much tougher with a lot of much bigger sides with much more money than us aiming for promotion, and actually doing something with it.
And whilst this was the case last season, a bunch of whom we finished above, those who have come up and come down are going to be far stronger than those who went the other way. Plus big sides who fell short last season (Luton, Plymouth, Huddersfield for instance) I think will be much better.
I feel we have trod water/regressed, and much of the league around us has improved. Last season everything fell into place, combined with our phenomenal organisation, defensive work and team unity, but this season reality will hit (the organisation, defensive work and unity ought to remain, but it won't take much to drop a lot as our success was built on such tight margins), and those who moaned and bitched throughout last season, are going to be apoplectic, because they think playoffs is now our par.
I won't blame Wallace, Leon or Revs, they work wonders bringing in who they do with our resources, but the reality is we will always be in the bottom two or three clubs in terms of size in this division, and I believe this season we have held on to too many players who should have gone, and our signings are nowhere near good enough to either make up for those who have left, or to keep pace with the rest of the league strengthening, in a huge part owing to resources meaning we cannot compete.
There is still time to make good signings of course and it could (and will) change, but we fly off to Spain soon, the season now isn't far away, and our squad doesn't inspire me it will score any goals to keep us anywhere close to the top end, unless we do some SERIOUS work.
Hope I am very very wrong, and as I say there is still a bit of time, but you have seen as well as me over many years on here (plus winning a prize in the prediction competition every year I entered it) that my reading of our league and how we will do in it is very rarely far wrong.
Edit: And I will also add that even had we kept Goode and White, I would still be saying we will drop down tje table. Losing them just adds to that concern even more.

I do question whether the playing budget has gone down by necessity due to the squad cost ratio dropping from 60% to 50% for League 1 (and stricter rules about owners injecting cash as equity?).
The training complex is easily League 1 level and the club has gotten better at seeking out commercial opportunities. However, attendances are still much more in line with L2 clubs.
The ownership, along with those of other smaller L1 clubs, should be pushing hard for a squad salary cap as was introduced during COVID to stop the league becoming as much of a financial basket case as the Championship.

I wonder what our turnover is compared to others. I suspect it must be lower due to the lowest attendances, but we do have other income sources. Or is TV money so much more than gate receipts than the gate receipts don't have much impact?
So as you say, if we can now only spend 50% of it on wages then our budget is going to be lower and probably less than most other clubs, but for owner injections. But other clubs probably have more of those too!

Sound like a killjoy I know.This stuff is all great and reason unlike most clubs we have little debt (and pay out tax I hope).But to even stand a chance of completing we need real major investment..Within that as our turnover would not increase much we could use the equity rules to as much a rules allow.

I believe we do. I was just about to reply to Chuds’ post when I read yours. Baldock has missed the fact that pitch rental might be a particular price during the day, but the evening sessions are £10 per person per hour with up to 16 in each session. So £160/hr, times up to 7 pitches (all usually full) times several hours per evening on top of any daytime use… it must be a pretty penny.

Totally agree with this. Taylor seems good but we won’t see anywhere near the same level of goal contributions to Harvey.
I’m not too bothered by who we sign up front at this stage, but we don’t create chances. We can look at our striker options in more detail once we create a couple dozen chances for Reid to flounder on - if he does.
My concern from the club is succession planning. We had a very set starting 11 and our substitutions were often quite late. We need to find a way to find a balance so that we can blood new players with some game time otherwise we face an overhaul every 2-3 seasons. We’ve been on the right side of recruitment lottery (with good scouting) - signing any player is never a guarantee. My concern so far is that none of the the signings so far really address any of our core objectives for the season ahead:
- New CB partner for Pidge to sure up our defence.
- Depth out wide for Chem/phoenix
- playmaker to replace White
- succession planning for Reidy while pushing for a starting place.
Whether Reid can do a job for us goal scoring wise is one question, the other is that we clearly are now lacking pace up front, where Reid was usually able to chase for 80 minutes

Do agree that it doesnt matter who we have up front necessarily due to the way we play. We could have Haaland up top and not score that many, so the focus on which striker we sign and their goal record is largely irrelevant unless there's a significant change in approach. Not necessarily a bad thing but I'm not as disappointed with Magennis as others are, as he's pretty well suited to how we play

The only glimmer of hope for me is if Campbell stays fit and Phoenix makes a step up this season. They'd provide a lot of attacking ability. And Taylor and Knight be brought into the team etc we don't know what they'll be like.
So still hopefully of a top half but agree I don't think playoffs are on the cards this year.

One thing that immediately jumps out for me is that he seems to have played 35+ games a season for most of his career. The majority of which at League One level or higher (SPL being so is subjective). Reliability is important. To still be at this level at his age with that many miles on the clock he is probably a model professional too.
As you say, Reidy may well have been consulted by Revs, maybe Josh will be the man to come off the bench for 20/30 minutes every week and allow us to manage Jamie’s minutes better.

Overview - Still just 23, Terry Taylor is a technically sound, intelligent midfielder who's quietly built up solid experience despite his age. Coming through at Wolves and earning Wales youth caps, before moving to Burton Albion, where he matured into a reliable operator in central areas. Injury limited his impact at Charlton but, as proved at Northampton on loan since January, when fit, Taylor is a midfielder who keeps things neat, moves the ball well, and brings a level of calmness rarely seen in League One midfields.
Strengths & Weaknesses - Taylor's main strength lies in his ability to dictate tempo. He's always scanning, always available, and happy to play under pressure. He recycles possession smartly, doesn't overcomplicate, and looks to play forward when the opportunities there. His short passing and body shape when receiving help progress the ball efficiently. Out of possession, he positions himself well to intercept and screen, rather than aggressively engage. Where he can still improve is physically, he's not particularly explosive or dominant in duels, so would benefit from playing alongside someone more combative. He also won't bring goals or major final-third influence, but he doesn't need to, he's there to control.
Tactical Fit - In a Stevenage side that's starting to value rhythm and technical quality alongside its physical core, Taylor fits nicely. He could sit in a midfield two and keep things moving or operate slightly deeper against more aggressive presses. He suits matches that require control, keeping the ball alive and feeding more attacking midfielders.
Why Stevenage? - Taylor needs trust, minutes, and a structured side, Stevenage offer that. If the injury concerns are behind him, he's a signing that brings control and composure to big moments.
