Okay after my gaffe with the post where I downplayed Freestone I'm happy to reverse my position and instead now take the line of thinking he or Goode was going to be surplus to requirements.

Him, Freestone, and Pidge, were all easily 40+ league-starts-a-season players so honestly we shouldn't try to replace him like-for-like.

I think we want a younger defender, maybe around 24-26, that we can develop to succeed Pidge (because Freestone is going to need a partner) then bring in a quality defender right at the end of their career with 2 good seasons left in them that we can rotate in.

Who are we being linked with?

Goode has chosen to leave at the end of his contract. Neither he or Freestone would have been surplus to requirements.

The issue with Freestone and Pidge as a centre back pairing is simply that they’re both left sided. It is something that could perhaps be ironed out in time if Freestone played as the right sided centre back (I suggest Lewis as he’s younger and probably more pliable in that sense than Pidge is) but there’s no guarantees it would work. Short term it could cost us too. If one of them was capable of playing on the right side of the centre back pairing then I’d have absolutely no qualms with them being our first choice partnership next season.

I should have phrased it differently when I said surplus to requirements.

What I meant was we couldn't give enough game time to all 3. Goode, Pidge, and Freestone could all justify playing 90% of the season but if we're playing a back four it doesn't work.

Given that an attacker can go either side of you, other than training your mind to position yourself to jockey/show them down the "other side" outside the job of LCB and RCB shouldn't be that different.

Maybe it's the leading foot in the tackle that holds a player back from switching sides, and going in with the "wrong" foot, not many CBs are two footed. Even though tackling is massibely rarer than it used to be.

I won't miss the endless sitters he missed for us, and his pathetic lack of any threat with his head offensively, despite being nine feet tall.

Edit: Or his bullshit 'long' throws.

Believe there is a rule/directive coming in to effect next season where a team only has something silly like 6-10 seconds to set up for a throw-in (think it only applies to throw-ins and not extended to other set pieces). So we may see the long throw tactic used more sparingly, definitely can't see Saxon sprinting across the pitch to take them from the other side.

It's in for the world cup. Thought it was 5 seconds from when the player picks the ball up, so can still take the time to get there? Not sure if FA/EFL adopting?

Similar for substitutions, 10 seconds once board is up to get off the pitch, (unless injured). Failure means incoming sub has to wait 1 minute.

Also fouls can be given at corners that occur before ball is in play i think?

Makes a lot more sense than what I got from first reading. Would have been quite a leap to reduce the time taken at a throw-in by that much and would almost eliminate the option of the long throw being an option.

Although, I do think some rules need this level of change rather than the watered down versions that they keep coming up with. Like the corner awarded for a keeper holding the ball too long, it can have a massive tactical impact so it was good to see it implemented quite strongly (to begin with), however I still don't think it will stick

I love diving. As a gifted forward it’s a delight to draw in a wretched defensive type and know exactly the moment he slides in, to just allow a breath of contact… then one must scream as one descends to the ground.

In Italy this is just seen as a skilled part of the game. Cunning.

But no, I want my football team to hurry along at all times. Particularly when 1-0 up in the last few minutes. Run along and collect the ball for them. We simply must be the most Corinthian upstanding example to all!!! Wah wah

Amuses me when people talk about playing the “right” way. The only right way is to do your utmost to win within the rules. There may be easier ways on the eye but the best thing to see is always three points on the board after a game.

I would argue that non competitive running, like jogging, fun runs and the original park run are not sports, they are fitness & exercise activities.

Park run now where times are recorded and published (and medals awarded?) are competitive for those that choose to adopt that approach, so they become a sport.

And no athlete works their arse off at a national level then goes to the Olympics "to take part". They might know they probanly ain't medalling but they want to compete.

Even when I played 5 a side (badly) or golf, I enjoyed the taking part but I wanted to win. And was usually disappointed.

When I read Tucks post that was my initial reaction to his comment about sport in general. If he had said " team sports" I would have been more in agreement. Most individuals in sport do it for the love of what they are doing but I guess there is always a winning aspect to any sport.
However, we all know there will only be one winner so most sports people know they will never win outright. As I know personally, striving for a personal best when I do the Parkrun at Fairlands.

I guess it’s is all a matter of what someone defines as sport. Personally I’d not class running as a hobby as a sport (although as you say there’s the element of trying to better yourself and besides the health benefits the “win” can come in the shape of beating PBs).

The second you are running in competitive races then the entire point is winning or beating as many people as you can. If you get enjoyment from participating then just as with entertainment for the spectator it’s only a by-product.

In football terms I’d much rather a team of players who know there’s only one winner and strive to be that winner even if they fall short than those who are resigned to the fact it’s a one in 24 chance of winning the league and perform accordingly.

Just promoted or not is irrelevant. They can offer more money and may offer a longer contract than we will.

Frustrating if he does go and goes there but no one player is worth rocking the boat for.

Seems likely we’ll lose Charlie and Harvey White, otherwise there’s plenty of stability. That can only be a good thing. It gives us an opportunity to recruit quality in a few areas rather than quantity.

Good player not sure how though. Not particular quick. Not as good as Pidge in the air. Must have a good footballing brain. Solid defender. Always chatting/winding up forwards or moaning at the ref.

Got a long throw which isn't very long.

Won't miss him in a sentimental way (mercenary rather than legend) but will be hard to replace with a similar standard defender.

Do you have anything to substantiate that claim?

Charlie is an excellent League 1 defender. He'll be a fans favourite for you.

Not blessed with pace or a range of passing, but in the top 4-5 CBs in L1 for his no nonsense defending, positioning and decision-making at the back.

Don't play it around and out from the back though. That ain't his game.

He is quick enough. Lack of pace has never been an issue imo. Half of the best centre back pairing in League One.

In terms of ambition, our owners are chucking significant amounts of money towards all things football related at the club. Coaching team, playing team, millions spent on the training ground and the fan experience as well. They want premier league football in a short space of time. In my opinion, way, way too optimistic but I guess it doesn't get much more ambitious than that. I'd be surprised if we weren't a consistent mid-table Champ team in a few years.

On Goode, probably opposite to the type of player we'd have signed a few years ago, but under Warne, the type he loves. None of that passing it around at the back nonsense that we had to endure under Russ Martin.

The main thing holding us back is attendances, as we've known for a while. If we could get them up consistently we'd be laughing, because the rest of the club is a well-run commercial operation, but if we did get up to the Championship we'd be competing with clubs that were several times larger than us, so would essentially be fighting the tide the entire time to grow into a Championship club. Every player we could sign could be offered much more money - and the chance to play in front of more fans - than we could offer.

I don't doubt that PW could make the numbers work if we did go up, but the truth is that we're too small to be a viable second-tier side at the moment. As bleak as it sounds, where we finished last season is probably our current peak, and we should be aiming for that next season too.

I do worry that last season will have made some fans think we should now be a playoff team every season, which ultimately will be almost impossible to achieve consistently. I'd be happy with mid table, and a lot more goals [or chances at the very least]

Most of those with the inflated sense of expectation will be the casuals too who will complain loudly then slink back off to their premier league clubs.

It’s a generational thing. Our attendances have improved over our decade in the FL, in 15 years time they’ll improve again if we can continue getting families and youngsters through the door. The town and surrounding area is capable of providing Championship level crowds, it’s just a case of persuading those people to come and be Stevenage fans.

Disagree regarding his range of passing, you don't get to the top level without being able to pass these days!

He only looks better as he is next to Pidge and Freestone. His passing really isn't that good. Balders description of him is a fair one for me.

Lincoln would have to want him in order for that to happen.

He’s gone to a club that will probably double his wage and finish in the top 6.

We can when they can offer significantly more money than us. I imagine their wage bill last season was close to, if not bigger than ours, and that was in L2
