I saw the club posted a video of Mousinho's goal against Torquay in the L2 playoff final (can't believe it's been 15 years!), and below it I noticed a comment talking about how good the attack was back then and how we didn't have to rely on our defence.

This got me wondering about our best team if we had to pick an entire unit from a specific season rather than individual players.

So pick one season for each of the following (and you can take into account rotation and depth):

Attack
Midfield
Defence
Goalkeeper(s)

To make things interesting, you can only pick a season once.

For me it goes:

Attack - 2010/11
Midfield - 2011/12
Defence - 2025/26
Goalkeeper(s) - 2009/10

Just rewatched that video and look at the way Boz drills that pass in for Charles to assist the goal. I wish he could come and teach that technique to our guys. If it gets cut out you're not caught out of position because you've not dawdled up the pitch taking extra touches waiting for it to open up.

Not sure I've quite got the hang of this but...

Attack - 1995-96
Midfield - 2025-26
Defence - 2009-10
Goalkeeper(s) - 2025-26

I can't see past our current midfield as being the most technically adept and talented we've ever had. We have options like Phoenix - it's just the system we play that perhaps doesn't showcase it to the fullest sometimes.

Anyway...

I noticed a comment talking about how good the attack was back then and how we didn't have to rely on our defence

I feel like I need to "say whaa" on that? Byron Harrison and John Mousinho were joint top scorers in that 2010-11 season – scoring 8 apiece. Then you had Chris Holroyd and Mark Roberts on 6. And then it was Lawrie Wilson (5), Scott Laird and Darius Charles (4). Hardly prolific.

I was going to say similar about the quoted bit. Our attack wasn't great, our defence was. (A mix of Laird, Wilson, Ashton, Roberts, Bostwick, Henry). All pretty much consider legends. The rest of the team were good but not legendary.

We may have scored more goals as a team but wasn't because our strikers/attackers were better.

You've said that and now you've got me wanting to swap my attacking choice for the 2006/07 attack.

Luke Oliver
Steve Morison

And yes I know they were midfielders but I'm chucking in Mitchell Cole and Craig Dobson because they always struck me as naturally attacking players.

So yeah I'm changing to the 06/07 attack.

I've noticed you've picked the 25/26 season twice so you've got to switch out one 🤣

I was going to mention 06/07 attack pre-January - Moro, Boydy, the walking weapon Luke Oliver, Dobbo, Cole, Miller and Guppy. Absolute champagne football, phwoar.

Did Boyd leave us for Posh in Jan? It's so far back I can't remember. I know he went to Posh for a then Conference record but I couldn't remember the timing.

Yes I was back from uni on New Years Day to see his farewell, 3-2 win against Aldershot where he scored a brace. Just surreal stuff, like someone playing FIFA.

Just had a look at the lineups from the trophy final that year against Kidderminster.

I'd forgotten Slabber even existed...

And I've no bloody clue how I forget about Jon Nurse. Can't remember why as it was so long ago but I really liked him as a player. I don't trust my memory but I seem to remember him being a decent player and reliable.

On the other side of things...

James Bloody Constable was such a player.

Can't believe he didn't go as high in the pyramid as Morison.

I'd take Steve over him everyday of the week but I'm shocked Constable never reached the Championship.

Nurse's problem was being a steady Eddy in a team where you had Boydy and Dobbo playing like pound shop Ronaldinho and Moro scoring for fun.
