Most dejected you've felt at a Boro game
Views: 909
What with the recent crash of the playoffs loss I was chatting with my daughter about the worst she felt as a Boro fan.
She was a kid and sobbed when Cambridge overturned our lead in the playoffs.
For me it was Bury away in about 2011-12 when we were really struggling and got our arsed handed to us on a plate and Robbo was so dejected as he came over to chat to who I assume was his mum. He just looked broken.
Might have been the 2011 3-0 defeat when Ryan Lowe scored.
I'd travelled midweek from Coventry alone after work. It was freezing. We had about 100 dejected fans and it was just sad.

Sheffield United for me. Felt like such a gut punch the way it happened. That surreal feeling of us being absolutely silent in that big, full stadium as their fans exploded when the goal went in. Having to put up with their bunch of morons goading us rather than being able to process and have that proper moment of closure with a special squad too.
Looking back I feel like Southend was similar but I think that is revisionist history on my part. Think I walked away that night optimistic about challenging for the title under GW next season and then heard his post-match interview and realised the rug was about to be pulled.

Sheffield Utd away as was end of an era and their fans.
York away in Teddy's last game, left that game the coldest I've ever been and was dejected as it was so shit especially after the previous season playoff push.
Was also a highlight as I think it was when Chuds sent a Coaching for dummies book picture to Kevin Watson 😂

Southend away in 2014/2015 playoffs
Also I’m sure to many people’s surprise Hartlepool away in 2022/2023 we dropped down to 5th with 6 games to go. Had won 1 out of our last 5 games, drawn the last 3 games 1-1 and just drawn to Hartlepool who were in the relegation zone. Getting on that long train home I was gutted was so comfortable earlier in the season in the automatics and now on a horrible run for a team trying to get top 3. I thought we were gonna f*ck it up. In hindsight I had no reason to be worried

Two that come to mind are Cambridge (A) and Sheffield United (A) in the respective playoffs; the latter definitely having an end of an era feel to it as has already been pointed out.
I think the first time I felt truly dejected after a game was when we lost at Kettering on Boxing Day 2002. We slumped to the bottom of the table and it felt like we were utterly screwed. You also knew that day Wayne Turner was done for.

Kettering for me too, even as a 13 year old it was rock bottom because we were properly, properly shit
Then Southend because it felt like the end of an era with GW leaving
Also Carlisle away at Stoke. We should have won that game, and although it only took a couple more years it felt like we would be in the conference forever at that point

It was so long ago I can't even remember if I attended but I think I did, when we were 2-0 up against Macclesfield and lost 3-2 in an important title defining match, in 1997.
Fortunately I was only 12 and can't remember how I felt now.

When the winning free kick hit top bins there was absolute silence, then a teeny noise from the 17 Macc fans. It was gutting

Yes I saw that game thinking at one stage that we were about to win 4 or 5 nil.
It was a big attendance if I remember correctly and the Macclesfield fans (at least near me in the West Stand) were the "politeness" I'd ever encountered!

Was that the game they cheated in some way? I can't remember how, but I was incredibly pissed off. Must have been in the early 2000s

Yes the Cambridge playoff game was one that sticks in the mind and the Sheffield United playoff defeat because felt like the end of an era.

The Sheffield game defo felt like a turning point. I feared we weren’t going to do well after that and we didn’t.

100 fans at Bury? More like 40.
1-5 home loss to Crewe for me. In theory this was supposed to be Westley experimenting with squad players before he officially took charge but it seemed clear that the task was going to be insurmountable for him and so it proved.

That was indeed a horrible night. But on the plus side, we knew it was the end of Gary Smith, so there was hope things could soon improve.
For me, for a while it was Carlisle at Stoke in the Conf playoff final, as I genuinely cried that day, as did many others, and was still young so it really hurt. Ut definitely now is Sheffield United away in the second leg of the L1 playoffs. I knew that was the end of that special period, I couldn't handle seeing Mark Roberts in tears on his own in front of the away end, which was made so much worse by hugging his mum and nan (I actually miss them as much as I miss him, they were the absolute loveliest people, who had so much pride in him and who both genuinely adored our fans and how much we all welcomed them and Mark into our club and hearts) as they were both sobbing. It was utterly devastating. And the end of that season was totally ruined by their fans, who are the reason I still hate that club. We couldn't have that moment of thanking our squad for what they gave us and the ride we had been on, despite knowing a number of them would be off that summer and not play for us again.
Edit: Not sure whether I said it on here, but I certainly did on X. The image of Pidge on Wednesday night, wading through the opposition fans to get to the away end, refusing to let anybody prevent him doing so, and standing alone in front of the away end applauding, close to tears, with a sea of away fans goading us just yards behind him. It was almost a carbon copy of Robbo at Sheffield United. We compare the two of them a lot, and that was just the cherry on the comparison cake. Two absolute legends, who lead the club on and off the pitch with such class, prefessionalism and inspiration, who drive players forward and make everybody better. My favourite two players ever.
Edit 2: I really wasn't that upset on Wednesday so that didn't come close to Sheffield Utd. Partly because I never believed we could actually go up this season (going into the second leg, I mean, I felt we had a chance during the season) but did back then, and partly because the nature of how it played out gave us an hour to accept it before FT, whereas Sheffield United won it late on so was much more of a dagger into the heart.

That moment with Pidge in front of the away end was special, interesting that Charlie and Harvey were the next to join him. Was so grateful we ended up getting the chance to applaud the lot of them as I'd specifically not risked the train so I'd have time to do it regardless of result!

Are you suggesting Harvey and Charlie wanted to ensure they said bye? 👀
Yup. Glad they were all able to come out, albeit a good while later, but also that most of our fans were still there to applaud when they did.

I meant to mention also, me and my aul fella stand up the south end of the ET and after Wigan most people either went home or congregated near the half way line to applaud. Pidge was the one player who traipsed all the way up the touchline to clap us back.

Twas well worth the journey despite the result.
The send off was well deserved, especially as we've been playing with 2 forwards since February so grinding out 1-0 wins.

Dejected - Cambridge/Sheffield Utd playoffs. But also two GW games, for different reasons. I’ve only ever walked out of two matches early and they were both GW games. The one that caused the biggest dejection was Colchester at home where we were dire and about 4-0 (4-1?) down - did they score a 5th as I left? I suppose that was more anger and frustration than dejection. But another dejection came for an entirely different reason, namely being at Reading away for our 1-0 victory through Darius, and hearing that GW was leaving. I felt sick then in a way I don’t think I ever have at football. There was a fair amount of anticipatory dejection when Teddy Sheringham signed as manager too - I cancelled my season ticket while his press conference was on, which proved to be a good move as I often felt dejected while he was around!

I remember the Sheringham 'unveiling' on the stage in the car park.
I think Phil realised that day that he'd got it horribly wrong when the only questions were from 10 year old kids asking about Manchester Utd and Teddy didn't even attempt to talk about Stevenage and just looked bored.
