Taking a moment...

Watching an end of year League One review at the minute and looking at the table, it's incredible what a phenomenal job Alex, the backroom staff and squad have done this year.
I'll be the first to say I really don't find our style of play 'fun' to watch, but given our position - ground size, wages available, reputation, size of our network/playing staff etc...we've done such an incredible job this year and I'm so proud of the club for their accomplishments, when most had us pegged for relegation.
The top 8 teams around us are all big clubs with the exception of Stockport & Lincoln who have had quite a bit of funding recently: Lincoln, Cardiff, Stockport, Bradford, Bolton, Luton, Plymouth & Huddersfield. We have absolutely no right to be where we are right now.
Is it attractive? Not really, but if we wanted to play teams as their own game, perhaps we'd be looking down the other end of the table and find ourselves in a similar position to Orient. And it might not be sexy, but successful teams find a way to win when performances aren't there and there have been a handful of those moments this season - Port Vale away comes to mind.
I've absolutely been critical of Rev's, and try to take a balanced view of enjoying watching games vs results but with 2 (possibly 3) huge games on the horizon, it's easy to forget where we were a couple of seasons ago and I for one will just appreciate the good times the club continues to deliver for us, against the odds.

This season I've really come to appreciate what Revs offers. The success on the pitch comes from it, but isn't an essential part of it.
Instead of some Tactics Tim or an old school headbanger, we've got a guy who is highly regarded, professional and doesn't demand respect that he hasn't shown first.
He's been around the club forever and knows what it is, he seems to have been a good judge of what characters are required for it and leads from the front in exhibiting that type of character.
Most of all he seems to be having the time of his life being the manager of Stevenage FC, something which I think would be hard to find elsewhere, for him and for us.

There are three bits of footage of him from Saturday, which sum him up as a person for me, and which all made me grin.
Firstly, Cuthbert hugging him as soon as the FT whistle went, and Revs is almost in tears. Secondly, just afterwards when people are invading the pitch and he is walking away wiping tears from his eyes, a kid is near him so he puts his hand out to shake it, but then realises that kid is HIS son, so his face immediately lights up with the biggest grin, he hugs him, kisses him and then embraces him in a long tight hug, with his other son also now involved too. The third, is of Revs going up the steps to the Directors' Box, again a kid is on the steps and he stop to celebrate with them first before continuing on his way and embracing PW, and again you can just see the pure pride, joy and sense of achievement spread all over his face. In every single one you see how much it meant to him, but how he made none of it about him.
He is simply the nicest guy who has time for everybody (I can speak first hand here that he always stops for a genuine chat and asks how I am, such as in situations like when I was checking in at my hotel in Spain in pre-season as he was walking across the foyer, when he saw me at reception he came over to say hi and have a chat), and genuinely cares about all his players and staff and is desperate for them to succeed.
As a player I imagine you would feel so valued and when every summer we hear about how much the players want to play for him, some people on here put it down to him being a soft touch, but you look at this season, look at the interactions between him and the players at FT, how delighted he is after a big win but has time for them all, it is things like that why as a player you would love to play for him and not feel like just another player in the squad. Also things like keeping Nick Freeman around to let him recover and get fit again before him going elsewhere. And stating he will be staying in touch with Cornick through his recovery. No need to do things like that, but he does because that is who he is. And football is a very small family so things like that become well-known and that reputation will undeniably help us in signing players (such as Matt Phillips).
And on top of all of that, he has also shown he knows what he is doing and is a good manager who gets the best out of his squad.
Some of the stick he has received this season has been awful, and very unwarranted. We have a guy who fully understands our club and our fans, who genuinely cares about it and us, and who works his arse off every day to achieve things for us (and is doing just that), and who does it all whilst just being a bloody lovely bloke. We are lucky to have him.
Edit: Fuck sake, he's not gonna marry you, Chuds!

Years ago when he scored a hattrick for us (can’t remember who against), I, a fully grown man tweeted that when I grew up I wanted to be Alex Revell. I can confirm that statement still rings true. What a bloke. Never been so happy for it to go right for a manager.

I used to think he was a soft touch but certain players who I thought didn't have to work hard enough for their place have found themselves with competition and come back into form in various parts of the season. I can see a natural ebb and flow in form now rather than a worry that certain people don't have to do enough to get on the team sheet.
Similarly I used to think his interviews showed a bit of a lack of insight after a loss, but he's either better at expressing himself or at finding solutions now.

I do find his interviews bland and full of repetitive clichés, but that's how they're taught to respond on the media modules of the licences.
And I wouldn't expect t him to tell us which players got roasted after a defeat, that stuff rightly stays behind the curtain.
Nor would I expect detailed tactical information as a) we wouldn't understand it and b) it might help future opponents.
Its just how managers respond these days. As soon as they speak bluntly they risk a fine if it's criticism of the officials, losing the dressing room if it's criticism of their players, or the sack if it's criticism of the board...

I don't expect him to dig anyone out, but Big Steve had clearly learnt from his best mate Sir Alex about saying things in interviews without actually saying them. Revs doesn't play that game.

This place is almost perfect. But being able to NAME AND SHAME the bed wetting weirdos adds a wonderful new element. This should be done on a weekly basis - ‘a thread in time’ / ‘a memory of when ——- called for the manager to be sacked’. Lovely stuff

I think regardless of whether we go up or not, next season will be the real test for Revs. We’re like to lose much of our spine, some to choice and others out of our hands.
I invited a few randoms on Saturday to watch the game and they all felt the game as a whole was so dire that they didn’t want to return for this Saturday’s game. A few people doesn’t matter, but assuming that’s the experience for most neutrals we’ll struggle to grow our fan base without some degree of attractive play (in isolation we have played much better than we did on Saturday).
I will be interested to see whether rev’s continues a pragmatic approach, or whether there are signs of a (r)evolution of playing style, should we be able to attract a more technical calibre of player.
As chuds says above, it’s not unnoticed that he’s clearly well respected and admired by players + staff alike. I’m hoping that we’ve moved on as a club and we’re now able to build a strategy and follow it through with some degree of pull + resources to move the team forwards. We did some fantastic business in the summer, hopefully this is a sign of future momentum in transfer markets.

Quite.
The match as a whole was not great, and our players all looked incredibly nervous and misplaced so many passes (having played some really decent stuff in the prior few games), but that ending should be enough to get anybody wanting to return for another dose!

I get that there are people who like seeing the ball zip around with no jeopardy or stakes, but they've got La Liga for that.

It was my 8 year old granddaughter's first game, wearing her Boro shirt. She was doing a Farley after the match, was absolutely thrilled with what she had witnessed. She even understood that we were 6th and into the playoffs...I think we have another supporter for the future.

(Glad she had a great day and that we have a new fan!)
