Exciting game

But stressful! Chances at either end but hopefully we don't regret Reid missing those two big ones.

Wonder where we would be if Kemp hadn't been benched for the middle part of the season? Guy is pure class and makes us tick.

Anyone know if this has officially been binned off?

Still in force.

Count down from 8 only starts when the last opposition player has left rhe box / isnt obstructing the keeper.

The ref last night was following the protocol and visibly counting down the 5-4-3-2-1

As much as the football isnt great i dont think much of the fans either considering we are chasing playoffs. Westley era east terrace was rocking 22 quid to watch that aswell i think is a rip off everyone can see if your gunna play hoofball you need a target man and someone who they can play off. We would get battered every game playing like we do in league 1

Profligate is a great word for tonight. Could easily have had 5-6. Reid, Phillips, Harvey and Kemp all missing great chances.

Matt Phillips touch was poor tonight, but his workrate was phenomenal.

Overall I thought we were excellent. Jasper shone and probably shaded Saxon and Charlie for MOTM for me.

Pidge made two phenomenal blocks and won every Harvey set pieces into the box.

If Kemp could do what he's done for the past few games he'd be a Championship player. Was he offside twice or was the limo shit?

Special mention to the ref who let almost everything go and allowed the game to flow.

Agree with all of that, I thought Roberts and Thompson were both excellent too, but the full backs take it, particularly Pattenden.

Revell deserves a serious amount of credit for the squad he's built and the unity they've clearly got. One thing in his comments stood out though, he mentioned not being happy at the attitude towards some of the players on the pitch...that surprised me as from where I stand everyone is (now at least) fully behind them all? I couldn't work out who he meant

Reckon Revs is talking about negativity towards our forwards: negativity when they miss chances, when they fail to hold the ball up, or when they do not press with the intensity some would like*. (And I bet Revs isn't impressed by the Lubala stuff. Those doing it may think it's ironic, but it's uncomfortable.)

[*I wonder how many in the stands have tried making back-to-back-to-back high intensity sprints, then having fans moaning when they need a moment to recover. Human bodies have limitations!]

Revell heard it and made a comment to Neil post-match about the attitude of some fans towards a player or players. He wasn't happy about it.

I assume it was Matt, who dis have a poor touch all game, nothing stuck, but he ran and ran and ran. No complaints from me. And id sign him up now for next season.

Anyone moaning at full time yesterday needs a big slap with a wet fish. Anyone booing or abusing during a game... what exactly do you hope to achieve? Even when a player is having a stinker, abusing them is hardly motivational.

Spot on, some of the entitlement amongst (a v small proportion of our fanbase) is stunning. It's worth comparing the size of our club, the attendances and history with all of those around us to see how well we're doing. Clearly a lot of that group weren't around for Kettering away under Wayne Turner, or the battering by Canvey Island that was mentioned on here the other day that puts things in perspective.

On Phillips, he was dreadful yesterday, but as you said he worked his socks off, and that's enough for me frankly. He's absolute quality the rest of the time, he deserves some slack. I actually thought it might be Lubala he was referring to - I can't defend him quite as much, but he also gives his all every time he comes on the pitch.

I thought he was a total non-entity earlier in the game but then as Barnsley tired and the game opened up he started getting involved, which maybe tells you something. It's odd that he was brought in and starts without any effort made to get the best out of him.

He’s a player who’s never really had a “best” position. Through his career he’s played wide, up front, at full back and he does a solid job at all (mostly in a higher level than League One). We play him where we need him and he’s doing a good job there. It comes back to the old story of people thinking goals scored is the only metric to measure an attacking player on. Important sure, not the be all, end all. His quality and levels of effort are evident to see. Last night perhaps wasn’t his best showing in a Boro shirt but nobody can be perfect all the time.

He’s probably doing wonders behind the scenes too for the other players as a role model and an example of what it takes to be a pro at a higher level. I doubt Revs signed him solely for his on field talents.

Phillips is better than Reid at holding up the ball, controlling the ball, not flinging himself to the ground every time the ball goes near him and passing/bringing in other players. Just can't shoot very well.

Whereas Reid is awful at controlling the ball and constantly on the floor with his arms out, but has a knack of scoring a few goals.

If you could combine them both we'd have a very good striker and he'd not be playing for us long.

Phillips has definitely helped the team though, not least because we have very few other options.

It seems to me that he's not particularly well suited to trying to get anything he can on a ball zipping past him at head height, and yet that's all he's being asked to do a lot of the time. When games open up and he gets time on the ball he offers something more than running around, which Bez can also do. But games opening up is usually not what we want.

Matt Phillips is *class* and the least of our worries! We kicked on towards the playoffs as soon as he signed. Look at the way be can break the defensive line with a turn, trick or cute pass. (Reid's recent header from Kemp's cross was a perfect example.) Sure he's not a target man, but he knows how to make things awkward for defenders. The only danger is if he gets injured - same for Reid

I actually really enjoyed that performance tonight. Our defence looked solid and well organised, and the attacking play in the second half was the best I’ve seen from us all season (unfortunately I've had to watch games on the tv, but hopefully I'll be able to attend games next season)

Yes, we were frustrating in the final third and wasted a lot of chances, but at least the job was already done in the first half.

Dan Kemp was man of the match, IMO.

Tonight’s game worried me beforehand. Barnsley can be a tough team to beat so I’m massively relieved. Plymouth drew as well so we can pretty much forget them. We’re only 3 points off 3rd now!

I have to praise Harvey White tonight & over the last few games. I’ve been his biggest critic but he’s really stepped up & been much more physical. Without Dan Phillips in the team we really needed everyone to get stuck in. Louis Thompson has also really done well.

Pattenden & Earley were also a excellent tonight!

We said Pidge just before they announced it.

He won absolutely everything and saved two definite goals in the first half, possibly even three. Without which we don't fight back and win that game.

Jasper, Saxon, Earley and Kemp were also very very good, but Pidge was correct for me for saving us multiple times early on and then winning everything bith ends of the pitch afterwards (Kemp being offside, especially the second one, loses him points as there was simply no reason to not be onside in that situation).

Proud of the players and fans tonight.

Stressful game.

How have we not score 5 goals here. This is why we don't play attacking football because we can't bloody finish.

And we leave ourselves more open for them to take a chance of their own at some point.

I just can't subscribe to this way of thinking. We've seen occasions where keeping it tight has cost us points because a 1 goal advantage is more easily undone (although I take your point about only having to score 1 if we can keep them out).
Creating more chances can only be a positive. We should have taken more of them over the last few games and made results more comfortable but that can be worked on. We managed to keep Barnsley at arm's length tonight and I'd even argue Lincoln for the most part despite them scoring twice.
I struggle with the pragmatic approach because you're relying on an individual, or group of L1 players not making a mistake, or someone producing a moment of magic which is absolutely possible with some of the quality in other squads

It’s this way of thinking that has us closer to the Championship than the National League. Given our resources and recent history that's not an exaggeration.

More chances are always good but can’t come at the expense of conceding more chances too. We will always lose a fire fight with sides who can throw more money at attacking talent. We can however recruit smartly and put together a side that is disciplined, well drilled and stingy with the chances we give away. 18 clean sheets show that we can rely on this squad of players to not make too many errors in that respect.

We’ve been a little more expansive in the last few games (and shipped seven goals). It must be tempered with keeping watertight at the back though. If we don’t go up I think we may be a little more positive next season although that will depend on ins and outs in the summer.

Just think there was an opportunity to play more freely earlier in the season, with the option to tighten up again if required because I agree that we can rely on the squad to be defensively strong.

And I don't think we can attribute the 5 goals at Bolton to a shift to a more expansive style of play

Appreciate that but I don’t think there was. We started well and then I think maybe froze a little when we realised where we were and the expectation levels ramped up. There’s also no quicker way for a manager to lose a dressing room than to rip up the playbook he’s been drilling into the side when waters get a little choppy. I don’t think Revs gets enough (or any) credit for how he handled the turbulent spell we had. There were tweaks but the ethos remained the same. He remained invested and kept the squad invested. We’re still punching well above our weight.

The first two goals at Bolton were absolutely attributable in part to playing more expansively. Even after the red card we chased the game rather than trying to shut up shop and protect our goal difference.

If we can work on taking half our chances then I agree. But whilst we miss chance after chance after chance, is the reward (nil) worth the risk!

But yeah any normal side would have won that 4 or 5 nil and if we become like that then of course it's infinitely better than grinding out a one nil with game management etc.

Horses for courses though. Barnsley were the perfect team to play, nothing to play for, manager leaving end of season, the small difference in a game meaning something and it not can make a big difference in the end result, when the margins are so fine.

Edit: I wonder if our thumping at Bolton led to a change in attitude in our approach?

Absolutely ridiculous. If we don't win this it might be the most pissed off I've been all season.

Reid twice
Phillips
Kemp
Thompson
Harvey White

All should have scored.

I can't bear it anymore.

We get slated for our style of play by clubs that play square balls straight to opposition across the face of their own goal like stupid cunts three times a half. Stick to FIFA.

Three big chances gone begging. Hope we don’t rue them.

He was injured/recovering from injury/couldn’t get into a winning side for a lot of the time he wasn’t starting. Firing at just the right time now though.
