Biggest defeat ever in L1
Views: 862
Our 5-1 loss yesterday is our biggest ever defeat in L1.
The last time we conceded 5 goals previously was in October 2021 where we lost 5-0 to Newport.

They can. They are 11 points clear with 4 left , so if they beat us (and Cardiff also win) they will be 11 points clear with only 3 left.
Edit: as Chuds previously mentioned the ideal scenario would be we beat Lincoln, but Cardiff lose/draw so Lincoln win the league anyway and we can all celebrate together.

The hunt to qualify for the playoffs with a 0 GD is still on...
Seriously has anyone done that before? We could do it if we concede a 6th tonight.
Goal difference was never going to be what decides if we make it anyway.
This keeps it simple. It's about points.

The goal difference thing is the worst thing about all this, largely down to Phillips. Our GD wasnāt great, but was similar to Stockport and Plymouth before this unnecessary dicking.

We were on +5, Plymouth is on +8 and Huddersfield are now on +10.
Given how we've been really stingy with goals this season our goal difference was never going to be more than for posterity by this point.
Only Barnsley has a lower GD in the top half...
But we're 6th. Incredible really.
I almost hope we make it with the lowest possible GD just to make a bit of history (but making it is the real goal of course).

Well if it's an omen or something... The lowest GD to be promoted in the FL, of the modern era, is apparently Huddersfield to the PL with a -2 GD.

Let's all settle down. Losing tonight isn't the worst thing in the world.
After this we have just 4 games left and 3 are at home with 1 away at Doncaster.
We're still 2 points and a game in hand above Huddersfield, and 4 points above Plymouth.
The playoffs would still be massively exceeding our wildest expectations from opening day in August.
Nights like tonight happen.
I don't have the expectation of the playoffs yet, but every game we get closer to 46 and are still in or in touching distance of the playoffs gives me a little more hope.

This is my thoughts exactly.
It would be wonderful to go all the way to the Championship but there has to be some realism too.
The finance needed to sustain a place in that league would be astronomical. I don't think even Mr Wallet has enough money in the bank to finance it. We would need more outside investment especially when you compare our attendances with others in that league plus higher costs overall.
Boro lost £1.3m last season...wait for it...Bolton lost nearly £14m.
It makes you think doesn't it?

Our strategy, which has been executed really well so far, has been to overcome the financial gulf by removing all the risk from games, giving those better players no chance to exert their influence.
It's maybe reassuring that it's taken until now to get a result like last night, where a combination of poor decision making and an opposition who showed up ready to capitalise meant it all came crashing down dramatically.
When we reduce the game to fine margins it is possible for a flood to come if every single one of them goes against us. Look at how the first couple of goals came from lovely touches from them to break through our press in a second, which we've got no answer to; I would have expected that to happen a lot more often than it has this season.

Re: V Bolton match thread

Iād definitely call last night an outlier. Weāre generally well drilled and disciplined. We just donāt allow ourselves to be tonked as we were last night.
Last night we were more open from the word go. Once the first goal went in we then had to chase the game and opened up even more, thatās football, we see it in games everywhere. Dan Phillips did us no favours getting sent off after Revs had made the tactical change and it all went to hell in a hand basket after that. No way would we have withdrawn Sweeney after the red card. These things happen though.
We donāt really press heavily across the entire pitch, weāre more a harrying in the final third outfit with a disciplined defence and thatās worked all season long. The game got stretched as we chased it with a man deficit. Iād not read too much into last night.
If we cross Boltonās path again in the play-offs hopefully theyāll think of last night and perhaps be a bit complacent. One can only hope.

Cozier-Dubarry is arguably the best player in League One. Unfortunate that this was his first game back since January and it coincided with the absence of Freestone et al on the left side of our defence. Sweeney was a spectator for the first two goals, Phillips has a moment of madness right in front of the referee...all in all a perfect storm. That's our first defeat to a team currently in the play-off places. Let's hope it is our last.

Because they do shit like lose to Doncaster at home last time out.
We've just got it so badly wrong tactically.
Inviting pressure by playing one up top. Playing 3 cbs and 3 central midfielders when all their attacks come down the wings is absolutely suicidal.
They always play like this at home, but even if he didn't know that he should have changed it when it was clear it wasn't working on 10 mins.
Took until we were 2-0 down to take action...
Edit.... and there's the red card we were talking about.

Goes to show thereās a reason we play the way we do, particularly away from home. Itās not over tonight, getting and not conceding the next goal will be crucial though if we want to get anything.
