If we had to vote now, who would you vote for now ?
Player of the Season ?
Most improved Player ?
Me it would be
Dan Phillips
and
Freestone

Do we actually have a most improved award?
Isn't that something they give in junior football to the kid that can now kick a ball properly?

Didn't we do a Borochat POTS for a couple of years?
We could do that again for most improved player.
I'm sure Sev would cough up £29 for a plastic trophy from Timpsons.

I still have Luke Freeman's trophy, he never collected it. Could just prize off the plaque and put a new one on.

Yes, agree on POTS - I love Dan Phillips in midfield. His energy is great.
Freestone is a good shout for most improved, there's probably a few in the mix

Dan Phillips is my Player of the Year by a country mile. Absolutely superb, consistent, powerful. Last week was a perfect example - the number of times he won back possession was unbelievable! His distribution was excellent as well.
Most improved - probably Freestone. His performances have been rock solid this season & the defence looks so much more secure with him in it.

Freestone is, and has been, our best defender over the course of the season, so I would nominate him for both awards (in the absence of an alternative year to year most improved. I do agree that Marschall has improved over the season but maybe not enough as there are still some shaky moments when he leaves the box).
I'm surprised by the number of votes for Dan Phillips as most improved. I don't think people fully appreciated his performances last season and have taken time to see his value
I don't think any other individuals have stood out for an extended period. Matt Phillips' arrival has improved us and changed the way we play. Jordan Roberts has looked a different (better) player in this LWB role. Phoenix has been exciting in fits and starts. Harvey had a bit of a run of scoring goals at the start of the season but hasn't performed at a particularly high level for the most part. Couple of others reliable more than anything (Luther for instance)

I would go along with this. Harvey White close second for most improved but I thought he was more confident in his role last season than Lewis was.
I am a Goode Truther.

Goode is phenomenal. When Harvey goes missing you won't find him for a few weeks, but I agree that when he's at it he's one of our best.
Dan Phillips is close to PotY. I think Freestone is an outside shot for it too tbh. He's been better than Pidge this season.

What has Marschall done for these votes?
We keep an awful lot of clean sheets but I can hardly remember Marschall making a save. And his distribution and commanding of his box isn't great.
I don't mind him as a keeper, but would not have even considered him, so interested to know why you are suggesting him?

Yes I don't quite know about most improvement as we've only known him for 8 months. So maybe people are basing it on some fans saying he was shite when we were top...
Most improved player has to be over a longer period of time for me.
It wouldn't be a Roberts, Reid or Luther. So it would be Freestone as the winner mainly for his consistency, his physical ability, the tackling, and aerial ability, and that fella that asked Phil at his Q&A why we were signing players from a relegated side....
Lewis is almost ready to take over from Pidge

On Freestone always assume he would be long term successor to Pidge.Happy for him now be LB and CB cover.Going forward next that leaves Butler as LB no 2 and Earley as utility left player.Uf both fit of course.

Happy for Freestone to be cover? As in not starting in his own right? Freestone and Phillips are my top two players of the season, both need to start every game where possible.
Butler needs getting rid of. Two seasons in a row he has missed large periods, we cannot carry players like that.

No want Freestone to be current LB but the cover is at CB if Pidge injured. But as I say in long term his replacement.Butler is in contact think to at least June 27.

Freestone has really kicked on with more game time. His versatility is an asset too. We’re very lucky in that respect that we have Luther too who can play right back and centre back (more so in a back three).
Reliable players who tick those boxes can be hard to come by and we have one for each side of the defence. It means we can be more flexible with our systems (four or five at the back) and change in game without too much disruption if needed. Plus the fact that we don’t have to have a bloated squad as there are players who can play multiple roles. I realise I’ve gone off on a tangent there but we’re lucky to have these players and credit to the manger for having them at the club.

If Goode goes we have 2 very good CBs but they both play the same side.
I don't see Sweeney being first choice.
Problem? Unless we play a back 3 including Luther.

He's not close to PotY for me. But he has developed, he comes for crosses and he holds the ball rather than punches it a lot, a bit old school.
His kicking can be dreadful though, and he is prone to the odd 50/50 25 yard mad dash which gets the ticker racing.

I hear a lot of people complain about his kicking, but i rarely see him mess things up.
He's a bloody good passer of the ball, rather than the old school form of goalkeeping.

Re: straw poll on PofY

He kicks out of his hands almost exclusively and it often goes higher than it goes long. I would like to see him place the ball down and pick out a target a bit better, especially as he still seems to run close to the 8 seconds rule despite being penalised a couple of times in the early weeks of the season. The margins are quite tight on his goal kicks at times but you'd rather it go out of play than be picked up by the opposition in the middle of the pitch

I’m going for player of the year
Dan Phillips
Or
Marschall
Dan has been excellent throughout and can definitely play at championship level if not with us imo
Filip - has got a good defence in front of him - but there have been so many times this season I’ve seen him save shots low down and manage to hold on to them , when if he spilt them , like many others could do , it would have led to a goal or more pressure. His handling of the ball is excellent. Also , he’s been given the ball a lot of times this season in difficult situations but always makes the right choice as in when to play it and when to clear it .
He has made things look easy when other keepers wouldn’t have because he is , very calm .
No disrespect to Taye - but Exeter away is an example.

Agree with all that re Filip. Also, sometimes him rushing out of the box can be brilliant. There was one occasion against Rotherham where a ball over the top would have seen one of their players clean through and not seeing Filip (out of camera view) I thought ‘oh no!’ and suddenly there was Filip to easily be first to the ball and wack it clear!

Happy with Filip in goal. Does what a keeper should.
But as Roy Keane says "that's his job".
Nothing to suggest he is PotS though. Hasn't gone above and beyond or produced a season of spectacular performances. Many games he doesn't even have a save to make!

This is where keepers are in a tricky position if they play behind a very tight back line. I remember Edwin van der Sar getting praise for keeping ten consecutive clean sheets when I doubt he was having to wash his kit between games.

Not as good as Taye before he fell off a cliff and Cooper IMO.

Re: straw poll on PofY

Taye, Cooper and Marschall have almost identical stats in terms of clean sheets and goals conceded from the same number of matches played in L1 for us, which very much says the defence is instrumental. And all are clearly good GKs.
For me, the key thing is I recall very few mistakes from any of them that led to goals (more common in the last few games played for Taye 😔), but I remember a lot of great saves from Cooper and Taye but very few from Marschall. I wouldn't blame him for the goals he has conceded, but the other two made saves you wouldn't expect much more than he has done.

Re: straw poll on PofY

POTS: Dan Phillips - The amount of pressure Dan Phillips takes off the team is absolutely immense and cannot be overstated. Consistently disrupting opposition play (out-muscling, out-running, intercepting passes, etc.) and is one of the only only players in this squad who can receive a ball to feet, under heavy pressure, and play a progressive pass. I would be astounded if he isn't playing championship football as a CDM next season.
Most Improved: Filip Marschall - This is a much more difficult choice (between him & Freestone really), but I feel as though Fil has gone from a 6/10 to a solid 8/10 goalie this year. As the season kicked off I felt that he was partly at fault for a couple of early goals, wasn't super confident in his area, and there was a little Taye vs. Fil debate starting to bubble. Now I don't even remember the last time he's been called into question and I feel quite relaxed when balls go into the box. A priority for a contract extension in the summer for me.
