This isn't a prediction on us going up or staying in League One, but rather just a quick question after someone asked if Spurs would be our local derby if we went up and they came down.
On the other end of things, Cambridge and MK Dons look like they're in with a good shout of coming up to our level.
This also gets to the heart of a bigger question I know we've had on here a few times.
Who the hell are our natural local derbies (regardless of what league they're in)?
Luton seems to look at Watford when we look at them.
Cambridge does the same with Peterborough.
So who is it? Hitchin? Barnet?
And just for a bit of fun if we go up and Spurs continue their downward trajectory is it them or Watford who is closest?

I think there has to be mutual animosity from both sides to make a rivalry/derby. Otherwise it’s just a local game.

Depends if you are a younger or older fan. I’m sure younger fans only see Cambridge or Luton as rivals but for me it will always be the sons of satan themselves - W****g - the mere mention of whom is likely to have me frothing at the mouth. I hate those bastards. Always will.

Isn’t Woking more a rivalry though than a derby as it’s not in close proximity? 50 miles away

For me a derby you’ve probably gotta be within 30ish miles.
Someone like Woking for example they’re miles away. Not a derby but definitely a bit of a rivalry in the conference years.
If we call Barnet a derby and Cambridge we’d have to call Spurs that.

Barnet, Woking and Hitchin
Cambridge and Luton add a bit of local fun due to large numbers of away travelling fans at the games but they're not our rivals

I don't really see Barnet as a derby.

Barnet was a proper derby. They had lost Enfield, and we filled that vacuum. It was as spicy as Woking for us for several years early 2000s

Never felt like that to me. They just feel like any other London club to me.

"We hate Kettering too"
There certainly was rivalry there and don't forget St Albans paying our benefits.

If hitchin is a derby then surely Hertford, Ware, Lectchworth, Baldock etc should be as well.

Correct, but the Barnet game feels much more empty since they left Underhill.
They've also been MASSIVE BASKET CASES up until a few months ago and have since turned their attention to Wealdstone

So you think a local derby has to have a time frame to be considered a derby?
Gotcha.

Partially, alongside distance. We’ve not played Hitchin in the league since 1994.

But it was a genuine rivalry. The same as Barnet and Woking.
Luton and Cambridge just get annoyed when we beat them.
