One of my best moments yesterday
Views: 1001
Matt Philips has been a fantastic addition and after a slightly disappointing transfer window , albeit Harry’s injury was so unfortunate, the club did some great transfer work with getting Matt in.
From his very first game we see his quality.
Yesterday he finished his chance superbly .
The moment- a bloke who has played at premiership level, coming up to the fans at the end of the game , full of positivity and recording it on a phone .
Fantastic work from the club and a massive addition to the club.
Great attitude Matt Philips has .

Yeah, his attitude is top, and given the number of games he’s played throughout his career he doesn’t seem too injury prone.
If finances allow I hope he’s here next season 🙏

I just get a sense that Matt Phillips is something special. Somehow, the way he plays, the way he reads the game and his attacking instinct is far and away above our level. The club has done very well to get him on board. If he carries on in this vein of form, I too hope we can hold on to him.

He's absolute class, and you can see the other players having more confidence that the ball will stick when it goes forward now. If we can keep him next season it would be huge, not just for the quality he has, but in bringing along some of the younger players too. He's in the McAnuff/Chair bracket of being a step above this level for me

We were discussing this on Saturday, and suggested that at his age, and having played in the PL and Championship for years already, he may now be at the point he simply wishes to play regularly and enjoy his football, rather than chasing one final payday, and that we could stand a chance of getting him for next season for that reason, and that we are local for him.
We all know that our training ground is a big draw for players, but I genuinely believe the way that Revs and our club treats players is another. The big hugs between Phillips and Revs at FT felt genuine, and Revs clearly makes the players feel valued and cared about as individuals, and treats them well off the pitch, they aren't just another player in the squad.
And football despite the money running through it, is actually quite a small business, with players all talking and quickly finding out about clubs and managers. Look at how we treated Nick Freeman after his injury, listen to what Revs said about that he will be certain to regularly stay in touch with Cornick to make sure he is getting on well with his recovery. There is no reason for us or him to do that, other than because of genuine care for the players and their welfare. Things like that may seem small, but I would suggest go a long way when a player is deciding whether to commit to a club/playing under a manager.

Yeah word definitely gets around quickly in football. Despite some elements I disagree with, I definitely feel like he's someone you would want to play for.

Good when we are doing well and for attracting players, but can lead to people like me saying he is too soft/close to players when things start going wrong, and suggesting you need someone to give them a bollocking etc. (which is probably wrong but that's the sort of thing I'd say if we were rubbish "he's too nice")

Ha! I asked Revs about exactly that in the 76 Lounge when he was appointed this time round. I said he had a reputation as a lovely guy and that he had clearly built a friendly relationship with the players whilst assistant manager, but what issues might that bring him now he needed to be ‘boss’ and - on occasion - deliver the hair-dryer treatment? He assured me that would not be a problem, he knew he had to alter his role and attitude with the players, and would do it without hesitation.
Looks like that’s working out well for him.

In all seriousness though, what else did you expect him to say?
"Yeah, I am a soft touch, its true. That Harvey White has me round his little finger the swine so will be in starting XI every week regardless of performance"

I think management on the whole has come out of the dark ages and you really don't need to shout at people to get them to perform.
Psychology is firmly on the side of the carrot over the stick and has been for decades now. Maybe football is catching up.
I worked best for bosses that bent over backwards to look after their staff and found that staff worked best for me if I treated them like adults.
You need the strength of character to manage lazy bastards and chancers but they are generally the exception not the rule.

Could not agree more. The 'hairdryer' treatment is a relic at this point, saved for Sunday League managers, and that twat at Dorking who's trying to become TikTok famous.
And to your first point, it's not like players choose to under-perform on purpose. Giving them a 'bollocking' isn't going to help them be more consistent. Even if someone isn't putting in the required effort, a 'performance review' type approach is far more effective than a 'bollocking'. If someone is being disrespectful or disruptive... you still don't need to bollock them, you just hold them to the standards that you (hopefully) established at the start of the season.

The risk assessments, first aid requirements and HR compliance process takes all the fun out of it.
I tended to just push slackers down the fire escape when they went for a vape, away from the CCTV cameras.

Correct. Unfortunately a lot of people would still rather see a gobshite Mike Bassett type in charge of their team over a methodical Gareth Southgate.

Agree with all of that - you would assume he would rather be the main man and adored with us than a bit part player at a 'bigger' club at this stage of his career too, but who knows.
There does already seem to be a bond with him and the others though - and probably helps that him and Revs were together at Wycombe at the start of his career.
If MP is here next season I'll be a very happy man, and he would hopefully be the sort of player that gets the part timers interested and attending again too.

It would also give the player confidence that the club is about stability and the manager is there long term thanks to the, what I think is a wise, 5 year contract!

Reminds me of Drewe Broughton who played a few games for us around 2001 - a class above,
Most notably away to Boston who were then managed by a certain Steve Evans.

Having seen Phillips up front it does make me realise what we've been missing since Reid had his pre-season injury.
Time and time again Reid was getting no luck and apart from the pass from Harvey to put Reid through for his cross, I felt he was really quiet all game.
He won a few freekicks in the second half - likely due to tired legs, but he doesn't look like half the player he was in our promotion season when he was always through behind the defence back line. Undoubtedly a higher standard of football hasn't worked in his favour.

Playing up front on his own does him zero favours.
Played well with Danny Rose and Luke Norris in League Two. Was prolific during our first season back in League One when partnered with Kane Hemmings.
Now he has Matt Phillips.
Reidy needs a striker partner.

Can't believe I'm watching him at the Boro. Might just be the difference in our playoff push!
Time, touch, awareness, know-how - all levels above. He's always been a lovely player
Much credit to Revs, Leon and PW for making this happen. It's a treat for us really
