Looks like Luther as the 3rd cb. I've wanted to try this for a while as Pattenden is usually solid at wing back and it gives us some much needed pace and a bit more quality in the back line.
I'd still be starting Kemp, and think White is lucky to be seemingly undroppable, but other than that looks ok.

What a difference in the second half. I'm euphoric that we came away with 3 points.
After the full time whistle I even managed to catch the eye of their number 33 Brad Hills and call him a clunt!

Superb team performance today. I didn't have much confidence at half time, but the team made that happen with absolute determination and some fantastic quality. Great game, performance and result. Six points off an excellent side like Stockport is fantastic.
Two more things:
- Matt Phillips is lovely to watch, isn't he. Class
- Worried for Louis - our other player who makes playing at this level look easy

Ok, Stockport might have had 90% possession and camped out in our half , but don’t let that fool you. Revs has got the tactics in this match spot on.
Wait and see us play them off the pitch second half.

It's important to keep us up to date during the match how bad Revs is because of he happen to fluke a win we don't get the opportunity afterwards.
13 flukes so far this season (out of 32), such a lucky manager. Just think if we had a positive manager then we would probably be well ahead of Cardiff now. Only explanation for it.

Tackling hasn't been Harvey's strength: it's something he's had to work on. I hope we would all say that we've seen improvement. I give credit to Harvey, coaches and teammates for that! Bottom line is he's on an upward curve with his development. Bigger clubs than us have noticed

White gives us quality on the ball. Phillips isn't a number 10, we need Kemp to slot in.
At the moment it's feeling like an 8-2 formation

White is weak in the tackle & always passes backwards or long aimless balls down the wing. Having said that, he was the reason we scored the 2nd! Phillips isn’t a no. 10 but stick him in the middle with Kemp in front

Similarly I don’t understand why people rate him highly. I watch him very closely & notice that he’s not involved in most games - it just passes him by.
He has no pace, can’t tackle, can’t head the ball. His deadballs are what he contributes but how many of them are quality?
I just don’t get why he’s never dropped! Phillips, Houghton & Kemp would be my midfield.

Re: Match Thread

For starters he was key in both of our goals yesterday.
He has been awarded the assist for our opener, for his delivery that Pidge scored from. Then he won the ball back with a good tackle despite apparently being unable to tackle, which he played to Reid who crossed it in for Phillips to score the winner.
But other than being instrumental in both goals in our 2-1 victory I agree, the game just passed him by.

We play a direct style of football and Harvey is our distributor - looking for a pass. He's not there to win tackles, that's why we have Phillips, Houghton & Thompson who muck in.
No doubt there's some tactical instruction at play here because, if he's the one scrapping in the 50-50s, he won't be the one distributing the knock-on.
When the ball goes forward, he's in front of our defensive setup usually, not playing off Reid/Phillips for the second balls.

Thompson should be in any starting midfield when fit IMO, with Phillips and one other depending on the opponent, but White is underrated and has improved a lot from when he first joined. Shame him and a few others will be off in the summer, particularly as we spent money on him which we won't recoup.

Really don't think they are similar.
Houghton is disciplined and sits in front of the back line. Rarely pushes forward.
Dan charges everywhere, sometimes so high he leads the press. Eats blue Smarties. He's like a rash. Gives his man no time on the ball.
Yes they are both largely disrupters but they are very different players in terms of style, tempo and strengths.
I prefer Dan because he has thighs to die for.

Re: Match Thread

I'd say it's more a case of 2 from Phillips, Houghton and Thompson in terms of the the midfield. You probably wouldn't want all 3 playing. Harvey is the only other midfielder who offers something different, hence him always playing. I guess you could swap him and Kemp with Kemp perhaps offering more creativity but doesn't have the same tracking back/engine and tackling ability as White has developed.

A back 5 doesn't need a really defensive midfielder. 3 CBs should be able to cope.
So Houghton is going to feature less and only come on to seeniut a point or three.
Dan Phillips is better than Louis if you are measuring interceptions high, tackles and yards covered. His heat map centre will be 20 yards higher up the pitch than Louis'
But Louis has more 'craft' to his game. Tough call.

I didn't rate him the previous two season but this season he is producing the goods. Highest assists I assume. Important goals at the start of the season. Still makes the odd mistake but who doesn't. Shame he'll be playing for Luton next season when we can really hate him. 😉

He's playing with the handbrake on last few months.
Head turned I reckon.
Maybe unfair and he's carrying a strain or something but he's playing it safe, going through the motions for me.
Early on he was excellent. I really liked what I saw till October-ish.

The quality on the ball, his corners, the pass to Reidy to get their centre back booked is why he's in the team.
Him "always passing backwards" is a myth

Kemp's a good player, but he needs to earn the shirt. He's been returning from injury and his form in recent substitute performances (e.g. Northampton) hasn't been great. At the same time Dan P has been one of our best players, and he helps us to press from the front. Not a downer on Kempy by any means - I rate him very highly - but I completely understand why he isn't starting yet

Kemp doesn't fit into how we go about trying to win games. A more daring manager would start Kemp and we'd probably lose a lot more but in a more entertaining way.
Just like Phoenix. Players that excite fans but don't have the all round game needed for a team like us (who needs to be organised and battle for wins)

Absolutely. Combination of circumstances has seen Dan out of the starting 11. He’s still getting chances from the bench, has to make the most of them and his time on the training field to snatch the shirt back.

Re: Match Thread

My observation of recent matches would be that Kemp could be Messi and wouldn't make any difference if he never gets the ball. So you can either try and find a way to get him involved, or you try a shape without him in it. I'd imagine we'd already been trying the former option.

Well last season we tried a formation style to suit Kemp and Kemp was outstanding and our player of the season. Can't remember where we finished in the league. Think it was lower than where we are now playing awfully every week, apparently.

Nah. I see a manager trying to make the best from our squad, and doing a good job of it. Defensive? I'd say balanced. Would you like to see us open to repeated counter-attacks if we overcommit going forward? Does that play to the strengths of Pidge, Charlie, Sweens etc?
