Home to Stockport Saturday
Views: 1460
Stockport have started to wobble a bit in the last month. Should be easy pickings for Boro if Revs gets his tactics right.
We did well against High Wycombe. We were just a bit unlucky with a few defending mistakes and missed goal chances. Apart from the opposition scoring three goals we were the better side.
I'm predicting a 2-0 Boro win.
COBY!

They've just lost 3-0 to Burton, so we must have half a chance

People might think I'm deranged...3-0 to Boro. No mistakes in defence with M. Phillips getting a hatrick.
There...now, just booked my therapist.

You’re deranged. 😉
And if you need to talk it over, I, your therapist, will be right behind you today on the East. 3-0 indeed! What are you thinking? Stockport are NEVER going to concede three away to a lowly, lesser team like us. There’s as much chance of that as Burto… oh, wait…

About time we scored a hat trick. Last one was Revs in 2018

No reason to suspect we'll struggle. We beat them up there recently. 2-0.

I seem to remember then manager Paul Fairclough saying similar after we were beaten at Lincoln 4-1 in a 1998 Cup Tie...and look what happened to him shortly after that.

Is our ground really that bad for visiting fans?

Maybe it’s just the fact they always seem to lose at BHW. Let’s hope that continues!

I do love when people from other joyless, soulless, dismal urban disasters have a pop at Stevenage.
I forgot they called Stockport the "Venice of Greater Manchester"...

I think part of the trouble is the route away fans have to take from the station to the ground (they mostly go through the arse end of the town centre), and then find no pubs near the ground/those ones which are frequented are not exactly the nicest places. And then they can't get a beer in the ground.
To them, Stevenage is basically the library end of town, Asda, Maccies, Burger King and The Mutual.
If our ground was built on Barclay school, and their route from the station was instead via the Old Town pubs, restaurants and some 200 year old buildings, fans would have a largely different view

Plus as an away end it's pretty shit for fans, especially at a large capacity.

Why?
No pillars.
No enforced "sit where you're told"
Relaxed attitude to standing
Reasonable leg room
A bar right outside
A roof
A decent gradient so your view isn't obstructed by the twat in front of you.

The queuing and bottlenecks at the end of the stand for example. Why pretty much every other club does access through the stand, but we went for the cheap option.
Then we made exactly the same mistake at the North end. It's a good job it never really gets that busy in there.

So people who turn up 10 minutes before KO have to deal with a queue to get their seat.
How.much more expensive would construction be if you have to build over a tunnel or two?
How many seats would you lose to put a couple of tunnels of the width required by safety rules through them? 30 or so? What's that over a season?
How much workspace underneath as you'd have to have the turnstiles under there too to avoid bottlenecks caused by right angled walkways.
And to suggest we should have done it under the North? Laughable if you.want a commercially usable space like the 76 underneath.

There's no reason the 76 lounge had to be located there. We already had the Broadhall Suite which could have been extended and revamped into the hardstanding area.
It would have undoubtably been more expensive, but there is a reason every other club does it, because it works so much better!

Of course the 76 didn't 'have to be' located there.
In the same vein, we didn't 'need' a new North stand.
They could have had 3 smaller retail units, divided by a couple of tunnels, maybe a reiki wellness spa or an art installation, but all things considered a large sports bar facing out onto the main throughfare at a doorball stadium was probably a better use of the space in terms of income and fan experience.

I'd say it is a key part of why attendances have increased since the North Stand and bar were built - it looks an attractive place to be on a matchday when people drive past and its busy in/outside it

And gives us more money.
Loads of us have relocated from the terrace to the Norf, paying a higher (season) ticket price, and will never go back. Plus the bar is always rammed at HT (and shows our match on the screens so you don't need to down your drink and rush back out), so will bring a decent additional revenue in on matchdays.
And as you say, for people walking or driving past the stand and bar looks impressive and will give off a good impression when people see a bar all lit up and full of people.

You saying kerb appeal can help a business?
Away with your nonsense. An 8 foot fence with turnstiles and the bare concrete underside of a stand would be just as appealing to passing foot and pedestrian traffic.
And even if it didn't, everyone would have a warm fuzzy feeling knowing that there were no bottlenecks at the corner of the stands at 5 minutes to kick off and full time.

Seeing large queues outside makes people think they are missing out on something. It's no coincidence a turnstile is always "broken" 🤣

You think thats uninspiring - I went to Reading yesterday and drove past the Madjeski stadium. Christ on a bike - it makes the walk from Stevenage station to the Lamex seem like the Hanging Gardens of Babylon

Didn't realise they had Costco next door, has anyone tried taking a rotisserie chicken through the turnstile?

Yes, there's some interesting and varied urban design around the town centre and Pin Green, but the stretch between the station and ground is the worst part of the whole town.
If I walk from my childhood home to the ground it would take me the whole length of Fairlands, which is a different prospect.

Away fans can get a beer during the game now.
Edit: Though that only started this season, so they won't be aware, but as a general rule.

No, both open to all beforehand.
They then close the main doors at KO and once everyone has departed they open each bar up only from access points within the ground during the game, until about 15 mins before the end of the match when you need to depart so they can be open for all again at FT (if demand is there, but usually only 76 Lounge).
