Burton Albion

Probably the only club smaller than us in League One, lost £8.3mil.

Another reminder of what we are dealing with and trying to compete with in League One, and why we cannot just go out and sign top players that some people are clamouring for, and why we end up with some players every season that people criticise like mad (Bez Lubala, for instance) because we have to take a chance on their potential, which doesn't always pay off.

Suspect our losses will be unpleasant this season, with so many midweek matches with smaller crowds, plus giving out lots of new contracts, and investing in three Championship strikers in Ahadme, Cornick and M.Phillips. Hopefully the sale of Doherty massively helps us out.

Every season we run with small (sadly, seemingly growing each year) losses and finish comfortably in League One, ensuring we remain solid for the future and don't risk the club, is a success. Any season we are pushing for promotion to the Championship, albeit that would be a whole new world of financial ruin, is a serious achievement for us.

As has been discussed many times, the worry comes when Phil sells up, we could easily end up with new owners like these Scandinavian chaps at Burton, and with eye-watering annual losses.

A large part of that is probably that they added an additional 73 employees, taking them up to 315 in total!

So they now.employ their own stewards rather than use an agency I'm guessing.

And maybe they've moved the catering back in-house.

Managed losses are fine, even large ones, if you have stable owner with deep pockets.

It's when they start chasing their losses with unsustainable investments.

Phil is clearly reluctantly content to lose several million a year now, and can afford it. That's why the Championship scares the shit out of me. He is too sensible to be content to lose multiples of that.

I think PW wants the Championship. He’s spoken about it since we’ve been a league club. It’ll be his legacy and maybe he’ll stretch himself a little to get it. I don’t have fears of him ruining himself or the club if we do get there though which is reassuring.

I think we’re probably a generation away from being a club that can organically get to the Championship and maybe stay there for a little while. As we already know, we’re punching above our weight as it is in a lot of respects so there’s a lot to thank Phil for, for putting in the dosh and also for being a steady hand at the tiller for so long.
