Match Fred V Vale
Views: 1256
Cornick and Phillips up top, Reid sub.
White, Phillips and Thompson in the middle.
Pidge starts with Freestone and Goode, Sweeney back on the bench. Luther and Saxon WBs.
Like that starting 11. Reid, Kemp and Roberts on the bench if the starters don't get us scoring.
I'd have maybe dropped White for Kemp but depends who pushes up as a 10.
Strap in, goals galore coming....

The easiest game we'll get for the rest of the season so a relief to get the three points, but Cornick's injury feels too high a price for it.

Their striker (accidentally) tripped Pidge on the edge of the box, which is why he was totally unmarked to tap it in. Believe the fourth official advised the ref to disallow it.

Disagree, give it 5-10 minutes of the second half, we have to trust our pros to keep their discipline.
Lets see if the game has settled a bit, and then decide, if we need to make the change because it's still frenetic and nasty, then bring on Houghton who can sit and hold the midfield.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

Only a brief replay but looked like it might've been a foul on the defender.
Games with unfortunate injuries do have this tendency to get nasty, I'd take an uneventful second half as that was getting chaotic and we deserve to have our noses in front.

Thanks. I was too busy moaning with the bloke next to me on the ET to see what happened. We’ve had a lot of possession but are defending really badly. Lots of individual mistakes & not picking up!
I’m going to say it again - I don’t see what White brings to this team. I’d be much happier with Houghton in midfield.
Dan Phillips is superb yet again!

I said he wasn't good at tracking runners and passing. I still stand by that.
As with most of our players, he's not complete and has major weaknesses.
What he is good at is charging around the midfield, breaking up play.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

I disagree. Phillips’ passing has been really good for most of the season & I don’t actually think it was ever that bad. He’s so consistent & would be one of the first names on the team sheet.
Marschall
Goode
Freestone
D Phillips
Houghton
Earley
These are the players we need to hold on to in my opinion. There’s not actually that many I’d get rid of - Lubala & White if someone offered half decent money

When you point that out they usually say he has improved so much since then and now does the things they said he should do. When in reality nothing has changed.
Luther got slated for about 4 years before people accepted he was actually quite good, and the excuse was he improve so much under Evans or something.

I think Luther came to us with decent marking in his first season and then subsequently forgot how to do it. I remember a period where he was getting beaten a lot and didn't have the excuse that the rest of our defenders did of having a 3mph top speed.
He started improving again when Revs stuck with him when a lot of managers would've binned him off as part of a failing team.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

The main comment I remember all the time was that he always left his man in acres of space, but that was clearly where a RB is meant to be or was asked to be and not leave a 20 yard gap between him and centre back for anyone to run through. You then move out to the winger if they receive the ball, which they more than likely would because you've left them in space. But it's better to leave a player in space out on the wing than leave a huge space through the middle of your defence. You can't be in both places. People couldn't accept that though.

Disagree.
What Sev said on here after the match at the weekend after Goode almost gifted them the equaliser late on, is spot on. People overrate Goode (which is not to say he isn't very good), gloss over the mistakes he makes (which he makes more often than many make out) and make out he is better than he is, whilst slating other players for the exact same thing.
He is a very solid L1 CB, who makes occasional mistakes, same as many others, including a number we already have in our squad.

Freestone is our best CB.
Still makes the odd ricket.
I'd be pushing the boat out to keep Saxon, Freestone, Luther and Marschall.
Louis T and Dan P
That's it. Anyone else is solid but replaceable.
Pidge for his leadership around the squad as a model pro and servant id.like tonkeep, but his star is waning due to age.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

Our defensive record has basically been identical for three years, regardless of personnel.
I like individual players in it, but the only real ever-present in that time has been Pidge (to a slightly lesser extent Luther), but as you say although he will still be that fantastic leader on and off the pitch, his performances are not as they were right now (I say this after he has been awarded MOTM in our last two matches, somehow). So I would like to keep each player within that unit, but none of them are irreplaceable and none of them should see us bend over backwards to keep. And it is pleasing to have Freestone, Marschall and Luther tied down (and Taylor to hopefully slot in nicely), as they are still young and can maintain their performances for years to come and provide consistent presence alongside other players within that unit.

We should double Dan Phillips wages if we can get him to sign a contract extension.
Then sell him for a couple of million.
MOTM again for me. Even without the goal.
Luther a close second, messed up a bit for their goal though.
We had 14 shots, and got 8 on target by my reckoning.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

I suspect him, Harvey, Charlie and Sweeney will come under the category "Club is in discussion with" when our retained and released list comes out in the summer, so basically they are all trying to get more money elsewhere (which is fine) and will only sign a new deal if it doesn't work out and they come back to us.
Which I don't imagine will happen as all four will get offered decent deals elsewhere, with possibly only Sweeney dropping down as could see him being offered something by a club with serious L2 promotion aspirations who will make him one of their starting CB partnership and guarantee him regular football.
Edit: Phillips will be the one of the four I am most disappointed to see leave as I feel the other three are a lot easier for us to replace.

Same. They might all also be waiting to see how we finish the season, how much they play and whether they're going to be first team starters. Perhaps why White and Phillips are starting more often now. More likely to sign if they're main players (and more weight in contract negotiations) than if just coming on as a sub each game.
Players will, I assume, be weighing up ambition, money and game time. If we can guarantee game time, they might take less money, or if you pay more they might accept being sub (Man City). If they see a genuine chance of promotion (ahead of a season) they might be more inclined to stay.

I was especially pleased that DP scored. When you watch his pre-match warmup shots on goal I always feel he has a rapier strike on him, and have said many times that I just wish he’d shoot occasionally as I always think he could be dangerous. So, so pleased he finally has done, and got the reward I’ve always thought he should.

Was a bit too open for my liking. Also got to remember it against the side bottom of the league. If we had had scored 4 or 5 like most teams might have playing like that then fine.

Re: Match Fred V Vale

That's because they are in a situation where they NEED wins, and draws aren't going to be enough, so they had to be attacking and open (hence them going three at the back on around an hour, which left them open for us to exploit and with lots of space to attack the rest of the match). This very much played into our favour as we can never break down sides who come to us to defend.
Said during today's match that a lot of our remaining games are against sides who need points to stay up, so could very much benefit us as they may need to play more open against us to chase the win.

Simpson too. Three strikers - presumably on decent wages - all with season-ending injuries.
Other than the horrible injury I thought tonight was good and actually entertaining, albeit against a poor side. D Philips and Thompson absolutely excellent, I'd like to see those two in the middle together more often, although Louis did seem to have more licence to roam around which worked well.
1 point off the playoffs with two games in hand. Revs out
