🟡⚫ Cambridge made a £3.7m loss for 2024/25. I wonder if ours will be higher or lower. Good game, good game.

🟠⚪ Neil Metcalfe is reporting we turned down a transfer day deadline bid from Luton for Harvey White. Subscribe to his substack for more.

🔵⚪ The latest new manager odds for Wigan are out:

Glenn Whelan 5/1
Gary Rowett 6/1
Gary Caldwell 8/1
Darren Moore 10/1
Darren Ferguson 10/1
Steve Bruce 10/1
Dean Holden 12/1
Robbie Savage 14/1
Chris Coleman 16/1

Gives an idea of the calibre available.

White is out of contract and almost definitely will be leaving for free. I don't think we should play him unless absolutely necessary if that's the case.

Exactly. When I handed my notice in at Maccy Ds to go to BK they never told me to sit around and do nothing. I still had to flip their burgers for a couple of weeks.

Because he's not committed to the club and going to leave. Play players who we can develop and would benefit from playing. Building a team for next year. He's not part of our future so leave as a backup/sub.

Haha I was even going to put "I'm not suggesting we cast him out and make him train with the youth team"

If we still had Doherty for example, I'd be looking to start him ahead knowing it would help his development that we can either benefit from the following season or profit from selling.

These things have to be taken on a case by case basis, but if we have a player who is of a similar standard and committed longer term to the club then it would make more sense to use that player.

White, if on top form, should be one of the first names on the team sheet. He hasn’t been on top form consistently for quite a while though. To the point where I’m wondering why other clubs are still allegedly sniffing around him. I’d not want to sign a player who has had a small purple patch in an otherwise average career to date. If he’s seen a move elsewhere on the horizon and downed tools then that would also be a red flag for me as an interested party. It’s all rumours of course but a couple of months back he was off to Preston, now it’s Luton. Quite a drop off regardless of where Luton were a couple of seasons back.

I can see an argument the other way, if a player is looking for new club in the summer then he will want to impress prospective employers and could well play even better.

Absolutely. And if that benefits our performances as a team until the summer (and there’s something to play for) then I’d keep playing the player.

The manner a player leaves a club speaks volumes for their professionalism in my opinion.

Didn't say they didn't care, I said why favour or develop a player further who isn't going to be yours. I'd rather play players who we are going to benefit from.

Of course if the player is far greater quality or can add something to the team to help us currently they yes play them. For example Goode is our best defender so even though he will likely leave we need to play him to benefit the current team.

We don't need White to start games and keep other players out who could benefit from game time.

Fair enough.

I am really not sure he would succeed with us either. Been sacked a bunch of times in L1, and wouldn't have the same backing he has enjoyed at Peterborough previously. It may be more entertaining, but I don't think results would be any better.
