Football songs / chants
Views: 876
Not sure how they start , etc - well I do know how they start someone starts one .
Just thinking whoever starts them ( not me, so I realise im putting it on others)
But when we have just gone 2-1 down that’s the time to get behind our team - if we’d have done that today - we may not have got an equaliser, but it would have been more enjoyable.
I’m thinking GW away at Southend when we were smaller ( we are still small)
Just saying- a decent performance today and a bit of singing from 60 minutes onwards and when the players come up at the end helps the team , the club and everyone.

I fully agree with this. I'll always remember the Derby away game a couple of seasons back where we were quite loud but got completely drowned out by the Derby fans as they were chasing a winner. You could tell it had a huge impact on their players, and I'd argue our immediate near-silence after conceding the 2nd this weekend may have had an impact on ours as well. If we audibly give up as fans, you'll feel it on the pitch for sure.
On a slight tangent, a worrying trend for me at recent away days has been that certain sections of our fans (that I don't see around our bit of the ET) increasingly sing some pretty offensive anti-traveller, misogynistic, or poverty-based chants. I never remember this being a huge issue, and it's made the people I go with (some of whom I have to convince to come to lower league football games) quite uncomfortable and some are unlikely to come again. Adding to this, the random chants of "paedo", especially when directed at the opposition's mascot who is clearly trying to wind us up is just a bit... pathetic. When the teams came out, their mascot immediately came running over to us, and instead of cheering for our team we started bashing him, which I'm certain is entirely the point of them doing it, to distract us. Worked like a charm.

That sort of chanting has been going on forever, rightly or wrongly - more concerning for me is the lack of any decent player-specific songs and noise!
The ET used to be incredible for it - during the GW era every player had a song, even the crap ones, and it felt a lot more united...and louder. I do think our atmosphere used to make BHW a more difficult place to go, but I suppose times - and the fans - have changed slightly. Or maybe I'm just getting old

From what I see on the ET and, I guess, throughout BHW, is the crowd feeding on what is happening on the pitch. When the players dig in, make crunching tackles and attack with force it generates such a response from the crowd.
At Luton, there were some good patches where our supporters got going but nowhere near what we as fans can generate. I can't remember hearing the "red and white army" chant. It's easy for everyone to get involved with that one, no complicated lyrics and it is deafening! So, for the likes of of me and Deltic, who struggle to work out the lyrics of most of the chants...keep it simple and it will encompass everyone.

Talking of chants, somebody please solve a mystery for me. What is the last line of this chant please?
‘…we travel near or far,
You can always hear us calling
From the… blah blah blahhhh’ (etc)
I haven’t known the answer in 21 years and at Luton I asked a chap singing it loudly behind me, and he didn’t know either! Told me he just made up stuff to fit! 🤷♀️

You can always hear us calling
From the comfort of our armchairs as we watch it on TV.

It should be
You can never hear us calling
Because we've sung this song too fast
Because, well, they have. Hence it being a jumbled mess. Same with the Dale Cavese. Why its sung twice as fast as we originally sung it is beyond me, doesn't give it chance to get really loud now

That's what I thought.
Altho' I used to sing "stand" rather than "bank", even tho' i knew it was wrong, made it more relevant to Boro.

Which is ironic as like most of our songs you can hear it being sung at 45 other grounds on any given weekend.
