It's feels like this defeat is a bit of a marker in the season for me.
I think if we'd have won today, and I thought it looked like we would win for a long period of that game, then the playoff chase continues.
But after losing, it feels like we're going to settle in to mid table mediocrity, which is of course still good going for us and we mustn't lose sight of that.

We have taken the lead in the second half in four of our last five matches. We have won none of them.
Our defensive unit that was so strong previously, is faltering at the time we most need it.
We really are not far off stringing a bunch of wins together and cementing our place towards the top of the table, but need it to happen rapidly where we see out these leads and hold on to the three points.

My view hasn't changed any more during the past few games where we have struggled a bit than it did during the first stretch of games in the season when we won most of them, as ten matches doesn't determine a season, nor a manager.
As said, we have led in the second half in four of our last five matches. See even just a couple of those games out and these conversations aren't happening. Fine margins.

Fancy trying it on a shoestring?
Every match in League 1, we are punching above our weight and on minimal finance.
I take my Stevenage Boro hat off in admiration of our achievements so far.
Look at the money Wilshere has at his disposal and we made him and his team look like a conference team first half.
Just enjoy the ride and see where it takes us.

We aren't operating on a shoestring.
We have a competitive budget according to Phil. It won't be massive but it's enough to sign and retain players like Houghton, Marschall, Luther and Goode who could all realistically play at 'bigger clubs'.
Luton are a bigger club with 5k more punters coming through the gatea every week, plus parachute money etc. But they're the anomaly, along with 3 or 4 other big spenders.

But we're not really competing anymore are we. We had an astonishing start but we've been sussed quickly the moment we've started playing the tougher games. We're a mid-table side and that's fine if we'd not handed an unprecedentedly long contract to Revell.
I'm under no illusions about our resources but we keep having these colossal drop offs. The issue this season is it happened after about 10 games rather than halfway through the season.
Mid-table isn't an awful place to be for a club like us, but don't say we're competing with the top teams because right now, barring the home win against Luton, and the away win against Stockport we haven't. We've played 10 games against the top 10 (with Bolton being the only team we've not played). We've got 10pts from those 10 games and if you narrow it down to teams in the playoff places and higher it's 6pts from 7 games.
We're not competing for promotion right now.

Points earned in the first 10 games count for the same as those gained in any other games. We’re two points outside of the play offs with two/three games in hand on the sides above us. That is competing. The season is a whole, not taken in parts.
It’s funny how those who were jizzing themselves posting every few days about Championship ground regs in August and September are now those wetting themselves because we’ve had a rough spell yet we’re still very much above where we expected to be before a ball was kicked.

I feel like people need. To stop using how we were playing months ago as a defence for how we're playing now. We had our best ever start but that ended months ago and what has followed has seen us start to drop.
Are we going to continue to use that start as a shield from any criticism for the whole season? How far do we have to drop before certain people will stop saying we're competing with the top teams?
I've said a mid-table finish would be great for a team of our size.
As for that quip about Championship regs, we were having an interesting hypothetical conversation.
Go back and look how multiple times I kept saying it was too early for us to start talking concretely about us going up.
The regs conversations.were more about the general direction and growth of the club whether it were next season or ten seasons from now so don't read into them too much.

Come on now. It wasn’t hypothetical for the people who drove the discussion, it was pant jizzing pure and simple.
Is the ground up to Championship standard? Are the players good enough for the Championship? Will a Championship club poach Revs? All early season topics here. Now all of a sudden the sky is falling because we’re outside the play offs.
We’ve tailed off a bit, absolutely. But we’ve not taken the nose dive some are making out. There have been signs that the early season form and patterns of play are still in there though. This is a very strange time for the knives to come out. It’s also ironic that those making the most negative noise are in the main those who were full of promotion and Championship chat early doors.

"We had our best ever start but that ended months ago"
Had we held on and won yesterday we would have been on our best ever start in League One right now. Today. Halfway through a season. As it is we are a mere three points off our best ever start, and one win off our most ever wins at this stage.
Win one of our two or three games in hand and we are in the playoffs. That is very much competing, in my eyes.

I'm not calling for Revs out by any stretch but the reason this would be our best start is because of just how insane that start to the season was.
We're going off the first 10 games and then downplaying or flat out ignoring the form over the last 13 games.
As I've said repeatedly I'm happy with a mid-table finish. I just cannot understand why some on here are so dead set against any criticism because we started well.
There has to be some sort of balance here where we acknowledge the insane start but also the stagnation that came later.

The five year contract is neither here nor there, it can be terminated at any time. Granted, there would be cost implications. To believe this means we are bound by the contract for five years is a misnomer. As said before on Borochat, the contract gives our club the insurance that if he is coaxed away, we are compensated. All this said, I am more than happy with what Revs and his coaching team have achieved up to now. Look at the first 55mins of the Luton game and the beginning of the second half against Plymouth, that shows what the manager has portrayed to the team. It's not the manager fault all the time or his inability, it is more the players that are not responding to instructions.

Re: Revell

Given the strong start Boro made to this season, along with the fact Revell did enough last season to keep us in League One, thats probably why Wallace placed a great deal of trust and confidence in him to offer a 5 year contract. That level of belief would explain why Wallace saw Revell as the right long-term choice to take the club forward and rewarded him with a five-year contract.
Unfortunately, we’re now on a poor run of form and have been winless since the 3–1 away victory at Stockport. Even so, things could be far worse, we could be sitting in the bottom four, but thankfully we still find ourselves in the top half of the table.
The frustration among fans is completely understandable, but realistically it’s unlikely Wallace will suddenly lose faith in Revell after a short bad spell. He has invested in him for the long term and will almost certainly believe the manager can turn things around.
However, if this poor run were to drag on over a longer period, for example six to seven games, then it would be reasonable for the board to start questioning whether Revell is the right man to change the club’s direction.

Before the season I would have been happy with somewhere in the 12th-17th range, hopefully making a bit of progress by earning more than last season's points total of 57.
Expectations have understandably gone up because of the good start. But, realistically, a top half finish would be excellent and something to build on

We have a better squad than last season.
We have seen Freestone and White turn into solid L1 players.
We have a fantastic defensive group for our level.
We flew.out of the blocks.
The league is probably weaker, with fewer standout teams.
If we don't improve on last season by a decent margin I'd say the manager hasn't hit the target I had for him, and Phil probably had for him.
So he'll have failed. I wouldn't necessarily change him but I would mark his card.

I'd argue that as good as the back for is from a defensive point of view, we are probably one of the weakest back fours when on the ball. I guess it's what you want from your defence, but it would have been very useful in a game like today to have a period of possession on the ball.

Well said. I agree with that completely. Expectations definitely shifted after the strong start, but realistically a top half finish would still be a very solid season and something we can build on.
While my faith in Revell has gone based on the recent run, he still has my respect. He’s clearly a good person who genuinely cares about the club, and I’m not going to start slating him just because results have dipped.
I will be more then happy to finish around 12th as that means we still remain a league one club for next season, considering I think we were one of the strong favorites to be relegated this season, someone please clarify this.

Yes, that’s a fair point and I agree with you. My previous post was more about looking at it from Wallace’s perspective and why he was likely confident enough to offer the five-year contract at the time.
When I mentioned us being in the top half, I was simply trying to highlight one of the few positives in what’s been a frustrating period lately.
Like you, I now cant really see much changing in the short term, and it seems a lot of Boro fans feel the same way. That’s probably where the concern comes from, not just the results, but the sense that we’re stuck in the same pattern.

It was annoying to lose. And looking at the stats, it was a real game of two halves.
Positives:
We came out of the traps and were at them from the get go, a really good first 25-30 minutes. A lot of fans wanted to see a good start to games, me included
Phillips looked good harassing anyone with the ball in that period
Marschall looked immense. Not just the penalty save, he was impressive throughout
Phoenix looked dangerous
Corners were really good, could have got a few more from set pieces
Negatives:
With a start like that, I'd like to see us score at least 1 or 2 while on top
We completely run out of steam after Luton pulled it back to 1-1
Reid looks off the pace - we need a fit striker that we can either rotate with him or play up top with him, he looks knackered
Roberts was a lucky boy not to get a second yellow for the incident near the Luton bench - brainless and not a great performance either
Overall, I was pleased to see the start and get straight out of the traps. Luton will be up there and we could have or should have nicked a point. Onto the next one

Again we suffer from not being able to put away chances, or make the most of when we are dominating. If other teams had the possession/corners etc we had first half they'd be leading 2 nil so when the inevitable change comes from the opposition and they have a good spell, conceding one doesn't matter so much.
With us we play well for large periods but get nothing for it, then the other team gets a chance and scores it.

We do look very leggy. A downside of operating with such a fierce press while on a stretched bill of health. Players have come back but we don't look full fitness at all. Feels like we're only able to play 1 half of football and then other feels reliant on the opposition making an error.
Was frustrating to see the substitutions come as soon as we conceded the second. I suspect they already had them planned but we need to be much more on the pulse and not give them time to build momentum like they had did.
We desperately need another option up top. Reid looks so tired up there alone, even with Roberts who clearly offers a different dynamic to Chem/Patterson with him being a bit more physical/direct.
I really don't see what harm it does us at the minute to have Young/Malcom start the odd game and bring Reid on in the second half.

Watching us play on TV makes it even more obvious how many long and/or hopeful balls we play forward. We rarely have a player who runs at their defence, committing defenders, putting other players in, maybe having a shot. We score so few 'constructed' goals, most are scrappy from close range. I think we can still be tight at the back but be more adventurous with the ball. We've been so frustrating to watch recently.
PS. This opinion is largely based on the second half today (and many recent home matches). I admit that we did look more energetic in the first half.

I think some of our attacking players who started the season well are now having a crisis of confidence due to seeing so little of the ball at their feet, not knowing how else to influence games. Like Campbell has done really well for us at points but what was he meant to do when he came on today? The exception being Roberts who seems happier to have a scrap than actually use his ability.

We need strikers in this market who can score goals, or we will finish mid table at this rate.....
Pheonix lovely cross into the box for Freestone, Roberts is lazy, couldnt be bothered 2nd half to chase the ball

It's too easy to say " we need strikers who can score goals" every football team wants that.
I wouldn't be surprised if we missed a few targets in pre-season that would have prevented situations like this, but the fact is we don't have huge budgets are goal-scoring strikers are a luxury.
We seem to be extremely poor when it comes to scouting strikers when it comes to impacting the first team.
Young, Pressley, Simpson, Apere, Malcom, Ahdme & Lubala - if you can include him. I'm sure there's others I'm missing too. None of these players have come close to being regular starters for us for varying reasons. We've done some absolutely scorching business elsewhere, but when it comes to forwards, whatever we're doing just isn't working.

The continued faith in Reid is insane - we can't just keep waiting for him to magically find confidence whilst missing easy chances every week. When he's not scoring he offers very, very little, and he's not been in proper goalscoring form for months now. I would say we need to bring in some new options but Revs would probably keep picking Reid anyway

Reid isn't the problem. He's chasing shadows for 99% of the game.

He's not that good though is he. Unfortunately we have no one better.

We don't make enough chances for him, but he has to offer more than he does at the moment. Even holding the ball up more effectively would at least offer something

If I never see Roberts in a Boro' shirt again I will be a very happy man.

"Fine".
Oh, well that's great then.
I view him in the same way I viewed Anthony Grant. This is not a good thing. The fact he has far more talent than half our squad but is the one I will be most pleased to see gone says it all.

I'm not a fan either. Too often goes missing.
Today he was one of our better players, in a good first half and a shit second. His levels dropped same as everyone else's but no further

He also would have been sent off today by a number of referees.
Already on a booking (as so often booked for dissent or petulance) and decides to wrap his arm around the opposition's neck and sling him to the floor, right in front of their bench. So so dumb. As always from him.
