We have been to different grounds and all the home supporters say the away support from our people is incredible"
They travelled in numbers on a shitty night weather wise. So credit due for that.
But for the most part, on the telly all I could hear was us? Is that microphone placement and were they loud all game, or a genuine reflection?

The odd chant here and there, but until they scored they were pretty reserved and quiet.
Cannot fault the numbers, but in terms of continuous noise, it wasn't there. But no surprise, Revs bigs up our fans too even if they have been quiet most of the game.

Thereās a huge amount of moaning on here!
I was at the game as I have been for every home game this season bar one & a few away games as well. Cardiff are easily the best team weāve faced this season by a distance & deserved to win but we played really well. Considering we were missing really important players such as our set piece taker, I thought we did well. You certainly canāt criticise the amount of commitment & effort! Yes, we lacked a cutting edge but we took the game to them a number of times & had them worried. They were ecstatic on winning the game!
Houghton was superb - winning so many balls & breaking up attacks. Luther also had a very good game. The defence were solid & were unlucky to concede after a fortunate deflection & a very well taken finish. Freestone also impressed me & won a lot of headers.
Letās not be too downhearted. Weāve had a bad run but things will pick up again. Anything above mid table will be more than we expected!

We donāt have to win promotion and in isolation there wasnāt a lot wrong with last nights set up but overall, our approach to games is not what it was at the start of the season. 2 goals in 7 games and 3 shots on target in our last 3 home games is poor. Thereās no other way to dress it up. Whilst the Vertu cup is not alway high on the agenda it wouldāve been great to put together a proper run in that competition but we crashed our rather meekly. Weāve also picked up unfortunate injuries whilst playing very few games.

Glad you saw Houghton the same way I did.
This is in no way a criticism of anybody not being at matches, for a host of possible reasons, but you miss so much of what goes on on the pitch when watching on TV rather than seeing the whole view of the pitch and player's positioning, runs off the ball etc., especially at this level with fewer cameras/them seemingly more zoomed in, and it really does skew the view on how certain players perform (and the team).
Houghton oozes experience and class for me when I watch him play, his positioning is rarely wrong and he does so much good work for us. Having him out for a few games was an enormous miss.

Houghton does so much off the ball, hence people like me who watch us on a screen, don't see it unless we look hard away from the focus of the camera.
I have, like many, in all honestly not been sold on him until just before he was injured relatively recently. But he is quality. Doherty should watch him closely.

Always been a fan of Houghton. And Phillips.
Think Goode is over hyped. A good player at this level but not as magnificent as people make out.
Doherty good potential but again getting a bit overhyped by people.
Also rate Ahadme as a "non-scoring" striker. Would like to see more of Reid and Ahadme together as a front two.
Everyone else tend to follow the popular opinion. Marschall has proven himself now to be number 1. Had to wait a while to be able to judge him.

We are blessed to have LJW, Pidge and Luther, and if Freestone keeps developing we have a ready replacement when Pidge calls it a day.
Saxon is easily good enough for the top of L1, shame he's made of glass... But we took a gamble on Goode who had an awful recent injury record and he's very resilient now, so maybe Saxon can do that too.

Early on last season when Freestone had some pretty clunky games I still thought he was a trier and brought the right attitude, been pleased to see it pay off.

Just watch how many times a move breaks down with one of them in possession. With two of them on, sure we won't concede many but there's a big reason why we are having zero shots on goal. We could have a leading Championship forward and they would struggle to find goals in our team at present.

Shame, thought a draw would have been deserved from that. A solid, hardworking performance where I felt they didn't look like scoring (same as us).
The lack of goals lately is of course a concern, but in isolation, and with the team available, no issues with the approach or performance from me today against the top scorers and top team in the league.
Great to have Houghton back, and Doherty didn't look at all out of place. Our best two players today.
Phoenix showed in his 25 minutes exactly why he doesn't start games. His lack of strength or defensive offering led to them breaking, which fell (via a fortunate deflection) to their guy to score, with a tidy finish. And every time he had the ball to create something, he put it straight out for a goal kick. Playing against L1 sides is a very different thing to playing against Palace U21 or Wimbledon reserves.

We could have played Bedwell u11s girl guide reserves for days and not scored. Did we have a shot on target? Maybe the deflected shot at the near post but couldnt see from where I stand whether it was on target or not.
Good defensive performance but not much else and, even taking into account the injuries, we set up far, far too defensively for a home game at this stage in the season. If the intention is to grow crowds and attract more people than surely some sort of attacking intent is quite important

That is the reason I hate watching games on TV, because you truly don't see the whole picture.
Set pieces were poor, I'll give you that, but all three players who normally take them for us were unavailable today (still should be better deliveries from professional footballers, mind).

Fair enough, if he was better than that in person then so be it.
I'm actually surprised Revell changed the game when he did, I didn't see that coming.
The way the ball looped to their forward for the goal was cruel, but these things happen when you dominate the possession.
Not taking this game in isolation the lack of goals is very, very worrying. For me it's as much about mindset as it is players on the pitch. It's worse than relegation form in that department (both shots on target and goals) . Hopefully some of the more creative players are back for Saturday and we have a slightly more positive gameplan!

Players need to be more clinical too. Against Walsall we had 19 shots and only one on target.
Which is partly where the criticism of our current striker options comes in (some justified, some harsh, IMO), but as one of the smallest clubs in the division, with some of the smallest crowds, how are we going to be able to afford top strikers? The only way is to lose millions a season like other clubs in the division, and quite honestly I would much rather have a sustainable club that has to take chances on young players from levels below or that other clubs deem not good enough, and try to get a result from, knowing if it doesn't work we can release them and try other options, than threaten our future chasing a dream, which may not even pay off anyway.

Re: Match Thread

Yeah I'm all for sustainability, but I don't really think the way we are playing at the moment is doing us any favours with the limited options we have.
To me it doesn't feel like in most games we are creating chance after chance and squandering them, more that we aren't creating chances at all. That should be a whole team concern, starting at the back. It's too simplistic just to blame the forwards.
I feel we got the balance between risk and reward right in the first few months of the season, but feel like we have regressed massively. This to me feels like Rev's first spell. We are in a great position, with relegation concerns lifted. Would just hope to play a bit more positively, especially when the players come back. No concerns with trying to play like this in a one off game, but it's started to happen too much.

Re: Match Thread

Agreed, but as I just posted elsewhere in the thread, I am not sure it is entirely a conscious mindset of wanting to be more defensive, on the whole.
I believe we were a surprise to many teams, in how we played as much as our results, early on, and now they are working out how best to stop us doing so, and without us having that extra quality to be able to just carry on as we were and being able to beat them anyway, we are trying to find other ways of doing so, and struggling to do so. Not helped by missing some of our better and more creative offensive players, at present.
If expecting us to not win at Stockport, Burton feels like a rather big game now, and one where we really do need to get a win, ideally scoring two or three goals in the process!

Wouldn't make a difference if we had Ronaldo up front if you create sod all. That's just embarrassing for a team in the top 6. Yes we are punching above our weight but for goodness sake sort it out. We are right back to last seasons form. Gotta change things in order to actually threaten the opposition goal. Can't rely on a set piece week in week out. Last goal from open play was 25th October.

Kemp was our most creative and potent player last year. We changed formation this year and he's been no way near as effective.
Don't get me wrong I like playing with wingers but I feel we need to find a way to get Kemp more involved as he is one of the few players that can unlock things and do something a bit special. Just seems to be marked out the game and not involved as much this season.

1 goal in our last 5 league games.
We can defend all we like but if we're all going for is 0-0 draws, with the odd defeat we're headed for mid-table.
Mid-table isn't anything to be ashamed for a club of our size but it really feels like we've hit our ceiling.
Let's just ditch the promotion talk for now and lower expectations. Maybe that will take some pressure off the lads.

This.
I don't think we go out to draw (every) game 0-0. Yes, we rely on our defence and hope to nick games occasionally, but we have also shown that we can play some good stuff.
I definitely think a certain proportion of our fanbase has, and will always, get ahead of themselves and excited at the prospect of promotion or any other traditional form of measuring success (such as a cup run). When in reality, most of us know that survival at this level is our first and main priority. We may have the resources to consolidate and finish mid table in any given season, with the potential to push occasionally when finances allow, but ultimately we are punching above our weight and the fact we had got ourselves into such a strong league position early on simply means we don't have to look over our shoulder at a relegation scrap.
It is highly possible that we lose more games than we win from now until the end of the season, and that's okay because we can afford to. I agree that I would like to see some more entertaining football from this team and encouraging individual performances, but let's not overreact to a tough defeat at home to Cardiff.

FWIW I wouldn't have even replied to you originally, but whenever we have fall into a rut you always claim there is a lack of passion and that really pissed me off after watching every player give it their all and work their arses off tonight against a very decent side. A wholly unjust accusation against our team, both tonight and this season.

I didnāt disagree with your opinion you jumped on mine ..
Ok maybe the lack of passion wasnāt warranted I retract that š¬
My point was Boro started the season pushing forward controlling the midfield and attacking teams ⦠now even though they have the best defence in the league seems that is Revlels focus and not that they arenāt scoring and are relying on Reid who seems to be well off the boil now heās playing for Ireland again isnāt boding well ..
This is all about opinions .. I know you go to all games thats great but I have watched every game this season and thatās just my opinion
Ps you always have to have a little Leeds pop when replying to me š«£ fuck me donāt you think itās hard enough being a Leeds fan as it is !!! š¤£š¤£

And that is a point we have been discussing during matches the past few weeks, why we have gone from looking dangerous whenever we attack and creating lots, as with early in the season, to now creating little and scoring very rarely.
The change is personnel owing to injuries is definitely a factor in having to play a different way as not every player plays the same or fits the same style (and our signings this season appear to be intended for us to be able to play a number of different formations and styles), but I also think a big issue is that we were probably a surprise package early on as it was a very different style to last season. But as clubs cottoned on, they have countered it and made it far harder for us to succeed playing the same way as a result. And whilst we have a good side, we aren't like Birmingham or Wrexham last year where our players are too good for the level so we can just play how we want and be better than and beat most sides. Also with us doing so well, sides started coming to us with defensive set ups, which are harder to break down. And I cannot really ever remember is dealing with that, going back decades with different managers, coaches and players, we always struggle to break down defensive sides.
This is where Revs is going to have to earn that new contract of his, and going to have to come up with a way we can mix it up and get back creating good chances, taking them, and winning again, regardless of how sides defend against us. Hopefully sooner rather than later before we start to drop down the table and out of contention.

Lincoln were the first side to come out and properly do a job on us. I feel like that was the result that shook us up a bit. As you say we aren't good enough to keep playing that same way and steamroller the opposition consistently. We also haven't found an alternative that works as effectively yet.

Why is 0-0 seen as a good result? Especially at home. Even if we were to somehow able to draw all the games against the playoff teams and above we would likely miss out due to lack of points accumulated.
At home, if you have any kind of ambition, 0-0 should never be accepted or aimed for, even with a weakened squad.
I guess if you are aiming for a slide down to midtable, then yeah it's great. I'd prefer to risk a bit.

They are the top side.
And it's not aiming for 0-0, it's aiming for 0-0 as the minimum (as opposed to losing) and trying to win off the back of that.
We haven't got the attacking players today to have the luxury of thinking we can out score the leading goalscorers and currently best team in the league. You have to be smart.
Keep it tight, and keep chipping away at trying to score.

Doherty doesn't look out of place, does he.
Even enough, crucially we've got the tempo right. Keep it fast and aggressive.
Only concern is both CBs on yellows now, so might see a change at some point second half.

Not out of place but not the same as having White or Phillips. Bring Phillips on when he gets booked.
Hopefully Reid isn't injured, as Lubala and Malcolm up front will be like the L2 season when we signed a load of conference strikers expecting to be playing in the conference before finding out we were saved.

All these apparent non-league players we have in our team and yet we are holding a massive club with big resources, and are in the playoffs of League One, which says to me we are doing even better than it first appears. Strange if we are so full of shit players that we would line up in a way to get the best out of them rather than just going at it and being carved open.
And yet people are still moaning about it. We can never win.

You may be.posting that half in jest but it's as true today as it was then.
If.you can't afford the technical quality, and some of your technical quality is injured or otherwise off the boil (Kemp, White, Roberts, Reid), you have to level the field another way.
And that way is being organised and working fucking hard. Which we did in spades, as Chuds has said.
That Dan P tackle that crashed Fish into the advertising hoardings late on typified Boro, committed and tenacious.

It was half in jest, but you're right, and Revell is channeling it now too, as least in our defensive mindset. That absolute we will not be beaten mentality and putting everything on the line to stop them getting past us at the back has been great to see. One deflection and a moment of brilliance was the only thing that got past

Let's not forget that Robinson has also played in the Prem and is probably on a pretty penny to stay at Cardiff in League 1.
We have two of our best players injured and having to bring on a player who was playing National League 3 months ago.

There shouldnt be any moaning from last night. Yes we didnt look like scoring, but they are a championship quality team, and we ran them very close. A ball falling our way during a set piece and we would all have thought it was brilliant.
Doherty, Luther and Saxon were all excellent. Am not suprised we did not create much missing Kemp, Roberts and Harvey.

Never been impressed with Lubala whenever heās played to be honest. I genuinely donāt know what he adds to our game in the slightest. Felt exactly the same when Simpson played up front for us. Poor on and off the ball. The fact that young et al donāt get a look in at all over Lubala says leaps and bounds at what Revās thinks of them.
Otherwise a very sound defensive performance. Clear weāve set up for a point. Midfield does feel too easy to play through at times, would like to see Phillips introduced later. Cardiff clearly too good for the league much like Birmingham last year. But unbeatable? Never.

Assume all injured but thats a fair few missing:
Kemp
White
Butler
Roberts
Edit: Ahadme also missing
Anyone else? Although I admit only Kemp and White are likely starters in our best XI at the moment.

I quite like it as a line-up.
Wing backs alongside a back 3 so licence for Saxon and LJW to push up when rare opportunities allow. Otherwise a solid 5.
Houghton as the midfield anchor. Ryan doing wonder kid stuff Ć la Orford, Louis shoring it all up and BGR being fed by Beryl.
Not sure we'll create much pretty stuff from open play but tonight is a night for set pieces and keeping it simple no?

You think they are available but he has dropped them from the squad entirely because he wants to go for a 0-0, but doesn't want the option of them being on the bench in case Cardiff score? Come on Harry, even you aren't that negative/anti-Revs!
You hate Sweeney and Phillips, who are both on the bench, most of our fans seem to think Taye is now a liability, Luther is better than Pattenden (and I really like Pattenden), Phoenix absolutely should not be starting today, Bez offers more physicality and experience than Malcolm, which just leaves Campbell, who I would often start but wouldn't fit into the formation today. So really dunno what else he can do considering injuries. Don't get me wrong, when I saw the team my instant thought was "losing tonight then", but we have a number of our most influential players unavailable.
