Ryan Doherty - a positive in a puddle of recent frustration
Views: 902
As Neil Metcalfe and Revs correctly pointed out, the guy can play mens football now.
He's 17 so shouldn't be starting games but assuming he is training full time with the senior squad I'd expect to see him coming on regularly as a sub second half of the season, for Harvey, Louis or Jordan, I think he can cover for any of them if they're blowing or on a yellow at 70 minutes.
Hopefully he doesn't go out on loan in January. Because he'd probably be in the Conference at best.
We've had a lot of 'false dawn' young players come through who haven't pushed on to nail down a place (McKee, Iontton, Gorman) but usually it's been when we have not had much competition, Ryan is fighting Harvey, Dan P, Louis and Jordan for a squad place, which can only do him good mid to long term.

I doubt very much he will go out on loan; he has proved himself good enough to be part of the first team squad.
However, given that he is only 17, if he continues to develop it won't be long before bigger clubs come sniffing.
I imagine West Ham value Orford at a million or three, and I know which of the two of them has impressed me most.

None of those you mentioned were ever seriously going to make it and were clearly not good enough from day one, and only played because we were shit and had nobody good to play.
Doherty has looked good and hasn't looked out of place from the start. Sure he had to develop a bit in some respects, but has never let himself down or looked below the level, and that level is a hell of a lot higher than in previous times too, so puts him even further above the others who we tried to force through.
He is the first one I have truly believed could make it for us. Even Wilmot looked suspect a lot of the (few) times he played for us.

Corrected it for you:

I watched McKee in a training session once, and I couldn’t believe how lazy he was.

Fair point on McKee and Iontton, not at the L2 level and we maybe damaged them by chucking them in the deep end too early, but Gorman did 2 years at Orient making plenty of appearances, after making 60+ for us when he wasn't really ready.
Fell out of love with the game and dropped down, but now slowly making his way back up. Always thought he'd earn a living in the EFL.
Ryan Johnson was another who has carved out a decent career so far and I thought he was just a big lad, nothing about him other than having determination and a man's body aged 17 suggested he could ever play for a living.

Gorman is, and was, both shit, and an absolute bellend.
I saw a video last season where he went over and kicked an Aldershot fan who was pinned to the ground, which was further confirmation of how I have always viewed him, and of multiple reports I heard about him from training when he played for us.

I think McKee was good enough for L2. He looked good in his breakthrough season. Expected him to be like Kennedy (not same type of player but same level). But I understand off the field issues scuppered that. Iontton was just rubbish.

Off the field was certainly Marks issues. He wanted to be home kicking a can down the street

Not everyone at that age can cope emotionally with being across the water from home, in a very uncertain, ultra competitive environment.
My kids couldn't have at 16-17, and I didn't last long when I was waved off at the station at 17 to go to Devon.

I'd never seem a CM actively avoid receiving the ball until I saw Iontton

Give the illusion of showing for the ball whilst carefully moving behind an opponent.
And then waving arms to say 'why didn't you give it to me'
I thought I imagined it.
