If we want to build our support the last thing we need is to have gaps between our home games. We had a great crowd for the Luton game and to get them to come back regularly we need regular home games otherwise they will go shopping instead.

The EFL need to either not schedule any League 1 games during international breaks or play them regardless of how many players are missing due to call-ups.

I'd go for the latter considering the terms of the Sky TV deal and the fact that it's third tier football

Should play all our home games first, then the away ones.

Get an early lead in the league and see if we can hold onto it away from home.

But what about the massive gap between the last home fixture and the first one of the next season. The fans won’t come back.

1. We can't do anything to control this
2. It doesn't really impact vast majority of our fans, who will go regardless
3. Having games spaced further apart can often boost attendances. Many floating fans won't/ can't afford to pay for 2-3 home games in a two week period.

The most frustrating thing this season is that all three games that have been postponed would've generated a larger crowd.

Why couldn't the breaks have fallen on shit like Stockport away?!

It is a pain and most certainly we could do without them but unfortunately it comes with the territory.
I don't think there is anything sensible can be done about it.

From next season onwards they are merging the September and October breaks, so there are only 2 autumn breaks. Still takes up 3 weekends but only 5 midweeks not 6, so the domestic game gets a midweek back

It aggravates me but sadly international football pre-dates the Football League and therefore gets dibs.

"International breaks" have only been a thing since 2015 AFAIK. I think it was Sven bleating about not having enough time with his players who were all tired that kicked off the debate

Qualifiers used to be exclusively midweek so games continued on the Saturday either side.

And tournaments obviously took place in the English/European off-sesson.

There certainly no international breaks "back in the day" before premier league days at least, possibly later

Yep agree with you and Balders mainly introduced to appease premier leagues around Europe, then world and to maximize TV rights. Added to that loads more players qualify at level due to family ties etc

Looks like it changed in the 1998/99 season, where it went from midweek games every month September - April before that to the fewer windows with 2 games in in October 1998, but there was still 1 midweek game in Feb and April 1999.

The play offs England v Scotland in November 1999 for Euro 2000 being one of the first major Autumn 'windows'

Suggest the expansion of the Champions league and needing more midweek windows for that during the season was also a driving factor

It very much feels like we have been fucked over with it this season, whilst others have been okay. Feels like more L1 games than normal have gone ahead the previous two breaks, yet neither of ours have, and now not the third either, so we are going to end up playing catch-up all season (which often doesn't work out for clubs, who say "if we win our games in hand" but then don't).

Peterborough played in the first window, but called off our game, Bolton played in both of the first two windows but called off ours. Bolton will likely also call off our game in the fourth and final one.

So what you're saying is we should drop back to non-league where clubs don't generally have international players, so we have fewer breaks between games.

I reckon that's a blinding idea, you need to somehow get it under Phil's nose.
