Still too soon...
Noticed one the 3CR commentators calling us genuine promotion contenders at the final whistle but I think it's still too soon.
We've had the best FL start in our history but looking back at many of the teams we've played there hasn't been much quality or any real promotion contenders yet except Huddersfield, who we suffered our only defeat of the season to.
We can only play who is front of us but after the Orient game I came away wondering how we'd lost control of the game so quickly when, at 3-1 up, I thought we'd add a few more and finish with a comfortable margin. We did defend well though after losing Pidge.
Our away form has been good enough with 3 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss, so I do think if we keep up that sort of average we'll finish in the top 2, but our next two league games are the first real litmus test for this team.
4pts from the Lincoln and Bradford games and remaining in the top 2 by the start of November would start putting us in the conversation for maybe a top 6 finish. Even then, given our Jekyll and Hyde seasons I'm still apprehensive as hell.
To be clear, right now I wouldn't change much at all and certainly if we keep up these results I can't see how we wouldn't go up...
But for me it still feels a bit too soon to be talking about being promotion contenders.

During the Rotherham vs Bradford game last Thursday, the commentator mentioned something like that for the last 10 seasons, the team top after 10 games has gone on to win promotion.
Gulp.

I just Chuds'd it, and that's only true for the last 5 seasons.
For the 4 seasons before that, the team top after 10 didn't go up

In 2019/20 Ipswich managed to drop from 1st after 10 games to 11th after 36 games, when the season was ended due to Covid
In 2012/13 Tranmere dropped from 1st to 11th (in a normal 46 game season) too.
Otherwise, the lowest position dropped to since then is 4th

Take it a game at a time and enjoy the journey.
In terms of league position and performances we’re exceeding expectations. That in itself is great. Nothing wrong with a little excitement, so long as people don’t then become doom and gloom merchants if we don’t win the league because we were top at the start of October.

Some opposition fans ask why we are celebrating after 10 games etc but we aren't celebrating getting promoted we are celebrating being top after 10 games because that is something to celebrate whether we stay there or not.
You don't have to wait until the end of the season to be happy about something in football.
It'd be like asking why are you celebrating a goal.

Sheffield Wednesday have another 37 games to go, what are there fans so upset about? It could all work out.

Agree- enjoy being top for now. Even Revs acknowledged in his post match that there will inevitably be bumps in the road, as there are for every team

We've done enough to show we are a good side.
So we should be pushing for the top end with confidence.
But a barren run up front... the loss of a couple of key players to injury... other clubs tapping up our squad and even our gaffer unsettling them...
Way too many things could happen to be talking about Championship football just yet as Sev says.
But the squad look good, they look happy and well organised, so we can all sit back and just enjoy whatever unfolds. Que sera sera

Seen some Luton fans claiming we are "not even a good team".
Their definition of good might be different but on a scale of
Outstanding (champions/automatics)
Very good (playoffs or thereabouts)
Good
Not very good (bottom half-ish)
Terrible (relegation)
you don't win 8 out of 10 if you aren't currently a good team.

And basing it on one match, played in insane windy conditions where both sides struggled to keep the ball in play for large periods as a result.
FWIW, the bookies have us as fourth favourites (behind Cardiff, Luton and Bolton) for promotion now, at shorter odds than we were to win yesterday's match...

A neutral watching yesterday might be forgiven for thinking that, for the first hour at least, they were watching two average teams failing to cope with the conditions and largely cancelling each other out.
Last season I would have expected a game like that to end 0-0 (probably) or 0-1.
The differences this year are subtle but defining. We defend better as a team (take a bow Charlie, fitting in so well alongside Pidge) and Freestone, who has grown into a first choice defender. And crucially we always carry a goal threat, from so many diferent areas. You seldom doubt we are going to score. Last season, you seldom thought we would.

Agree 100%
Spoiler alert. Lewis Freestone should be player of the month for October. Yesterday's sponsor wanted their pic with Kemp but boy was LF ncredible.

I thought Kemp was one of our poorer players Saturday. He tried, as he always does, but not much was coming off for him.
Freestone or Goode MOTMs for sure

Its a hell of a job to pick anyone as they all played their socks off and played a part in the victory. That said, in addition to Freestone and Goode, add Luther. He made incredible tackles and captained the team impeccably.

Freestone included in league one TOTW.
Two Cardiff defenders, who shipped 3 goals at home get in over Goode sadly.

Don't remember which, but there was another of our home games earlier this season where Freestone was very clearly our MOTM, but where Kemp or White was chosen instead.
Those around me wondered why, to which I made that same point, that most sponsors aren't going to be regular Boro' fans and aren't going to want a group photo with a fairly unknown and unexciting left back.

I’m not sure Luton or Bolton are serious contenders for promotion this season. Cardiff and Bradford, yes, and I had Huddersfield at the start of the season as my choice for automatics with Cardiff, but I’d now include Lincoln as a strong playoff possibility. No one else really looks to me like they’ve got quite what’s needed. (I’m aware this post may not age well!).

Lincoln are my dark horses for an automatic promotion spot. Very impressed when I've watched them on Sky. Well drilled like us.

Should we do the unthinkable and go up, it might be good if a couple of the smaller clubs go up with us.
Lincoln certainly look a threat. That away game will be tough, that's why it was so pleasing to beat Luton.
