Neil's substack
Views: 37323
I'm sure you'll all know that Neil Metcalfe has been made redundant from Newsquest. He is now launching a full Boro service for us off his own back, please see the Mansfield edition linked below.
This is really excellent coverage.
We're now in a use it or lose it scenario. Neil needs to make a living, so he will be charging £4 per month or £40 per year for access from next week. That's not really a lot at all for the quality of the coverage.
Let's dip our hands in our pockets, save coverage of our club, it's in good hands with Neil!

Nothing on Comet site at all about yesterday or in fact about us all last week, seems they he abandoned coverage of or at most may just repeat stuff from other outlets .

Junk Substack
Views: 29652
I’m now being inundated with junk substacks. I’m worried that if I click on unsubscribe it’ll also unsubscribe Neil’s that I’ve paid for. Anyone know how to stop the junk but keep Neil’s only?

I'm not getting much junk at all. Don't think I un/checked any boxes?
I'm guessing you can do something in settings or preferences to only get notifications for 'paid' and selected subscriptions?
Google can probably help you, as I'm a luddite. Otherwise a teenager will be along soon to tut at our IT skills.

Yep that’s probably where I went wrong checking/unchecking boxes.
Neil has said he’ll look into it and let me know. As you say Google can often help us luddites so may be I’ll check there.

Have subscribed - great value at that price, and more than worth it to ensure we still have a proper, independent reporter around the club.

Same, particularly considering Neil's coverage is significantly better than any of the previous reporters to cover the club

Good read, hope he can make a living from it while also enjoying greater editorial freedom.
More likely to subscribe knowing that the vast majority of the money is going to him (minus website/paywall costs).

Can we also ensure people don't lift whole articles or large blocks of text and post them on here.
Neil.may appreciate small snippets which encourage people to go to his feed, he may not. But he won't want his stuff copy/pasted from behind his paywall.

Neil does a great job reporting on Boro, but I refused to subscribe to the comet because the website was shite. I'm happy to pay for Neil's work and I hope it works out for him financially so he can continue to do it.

Why can't he just put on a nice frock and walk up and down the pavements after dark like the rest of us?

Just subscribed. Should be well worth it for just £40 a year. Hope it works out for Neil.

Is it any wonder people form their view of the world from what some cunt on YouTube says when all the legitimate news sources are being ploughed into the earth to satisfy shareholders?

Regional press has been Reach PLCified. It's an absolute shitshow.
You get new hacks tasked with reviewing local Wetherspoons to fulfil article/word quotas on the website, while pumping the world full of ads that make content unreadable.
Stevenage used to support, what, four printed newspapers a week?

Yup - regional press is a shit show these days. It's services like coverage of council meetings, local sport and the like that will be lost

Thankfully coverage of council meetings is safe with the BBC-funded Local Democracy Reporting Service, at least until 2027 when the BBC Charter is up for renewal.
The Comet and local papers across the country get access to all LDRS stories - there are two LDRS reporters for Herts (I’m one of them) so the major stories from council meetings do get covered still.

There is now no match reporting for any local games in the press.
And even the Comet local news is just a reprint of court reports, paid obituaries, council planning and road closure notices.
No actual 'reporting' of news. Reader 'clicks' must be plummeting. And the website is unusable due to ads. The footy was the only thing worth reading.
Hopefully the club continue to give Neil exclusive interviews etc.

I daresay the club will continue to support him because that's kinda what we do. But the question is then "what if Neil has to write something critical".
