OT LNER Stevenage
Views: 58834
Apparently from Dec you cannot get on a train from Stevenage to travel to KX or visa versa .Assume may not affect our away day travels too much as can still gets on north bound trains but have no idea why being brought in as can't see any current issues .

Still not sure how this apparently "enhances" the service other than a few through passengers will not have to put we with some Stevenage or KX bound other passengers for about 25 mins .They time saved by these getting on at Stevenage will be minimal too , the main time is longer distances travellers getting on or off with luggage etc

More seats and seat availability to the North means they can sell more longer distance journeys, at cheaper prices if they want, and the nicer travelling experience of not having a load of commuters pack out their trains for the first 25 minutes will encourage more journeys by train to/from the North over time

Are the longer distance journeys financially important? Surely they make up a tiny % of sales at most?
95% + of weekday journeys are surely commutes, albeit with silly house prices people commute from further away into London and other big employmwnt hubs.

Bit of bed time reading if you like:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/rail-ticket-types-and-journey-purposes
In the 4 week period June to July UK rail industry leisure revenue was ÂŁ459m against ÂŁ297m commute (and ÂŁ75m business)

That's genuinely surprising.
Working from home will have had an impact but not that big.
I guess my impression is tainted because most of my train travel was for work - on badly overcrowded peak-time services in/out of London, with only very occasional off-peak leisure travel.

Last year's ticket data shows 31% more tickets sold between Leeds and Kings Cross alone than Stevenage to Kings Cross and St Pancras combined.

The lost revenue doesn't seem worth it for saving 30-60 seconds of journey time for the UK taxpayer-owned company.
Can understand if they don't want to sell seat reservations between Stevenage and King's Cross though.

By 2027 all the trains will be part of GBR, and all the trains since Covid have effectively been publicly owned anyway, with the Government taking all the revenue risk (losses).
This is a natural progression of a publically/centrally run railway and goes back to how things were pre-privatisation. The commuter services are run for commuters and the intercity trains should be for intercity journeys. Rather than people taking all the seats/seat reservations for london-stevenage more space and seats are available to book longer distance journeys, making that offer and availability more attractive and increasing revenue/journeys overall for the whole system.
I don't like it, as I try and aim for them for the journey home generally, but I can see why they're doing it for the better operation for the overal system

As long as the trains are using the same physical infrastructure and tickets allow you to break your journey, whenever they try stuff like this it's only really going to be advisory in nature.
If I have a full fare ticket valid between Stevenage and Kings Cross I can get on any train I please and it's up to them if they want to physically restrain me from doing so. You can only sell TL/GN tickets from Stevenage but that doesn't stop somebody buying a ticket valid on LNER from Doncaster, getting off at Stevenage and jumping back on the next one and they'd be entitled to do so.
Most people are probably like me and would rather do the four minute longer journey to avoid getting shouted at by platform staff.

No Stevenage - London ticket will be valid on LNER, I imagine they'll heavily check tickets between Stevenage and London for the first few months at least and issue penalty fares for anyone who boards/doesn't have a ticket to/from somewhere further North

The traini stops anyway .Takes me one second to get on or off plus others with luggage on whole journey getting on and off so no lost time.

You've obviously not got the 18.33 from kings Cross before. Full of stevenage commuters taking up the seats and plenty of those going further north standing. Then takes ages to empty at stevenage

Lumo do this already. Was on a train from London to Scotland few months ago and they announced that people werenât allowed to get off Stevenage. Thought it was strange.
Ironically Lumo are our U18 training kit partners whilst they stop at Stevenage station it is impossible to get a train from Stevenage to Kings Cross or visa versa with them.

This seems a bit mad outside peak times as when I've used one at the weekend during the day and it wasn't a five coach one there's always bags of space.

Stevenage trains will still go to Finsbury Park and St Pancras so your connectivity to the underground etc. will be unchanged.
And as Sev says, other TOCs will surely still run into King's X.

I wonder if they will let Stevenage commuters use them if GN and TL are all cancelled like they often are for a power failure at Three Bridges.

As the resident rail enthusiast and former employee of good old BR at Kings Cross, this is nothing new. Periodically over the last 40 years various incarnations of East Coast services have had pickup/setdown only services. Often there were periods where announcements would be made at Stevenage that passengers were not to board the train as the southbound service was âsetdown onlyâ. The thing is that many people, including me, ignored this with impunity. What could they do? Catch you on the train and fine you? (Or as was actually the rule, charge you from whatever the last stop was). Never witnessed it happening. I suspect that this again will be the case. Theyâll be all over it for a few months, then find that the system isnât working and quietly drop it. And once itâs all GBR once more, they wonât even be able to claim that one cost centre (GN/TL) is taking the money whilst another (LNER) is providing the travel.

Read somewhere they will have staff on board handing out penalty charge to anyone just travelling to or from Stevenage, eventhough imo you have paid the fare anyway .How long they will keep.it up for thought who knows.

You haven't paid the fare though, if that ticket isn't valid on that service.
Thats like buying a Ryanir flight to Spain then trying to board the BA flight there and saying 'but I've paid the fare'?
