When athletic folded and stevenage didn’t have a team , loads of Stevenage fans would go to Hitchin every home game and stand in the away end and boo them. I was 5 years old when my dad and grandad took me there for two seasons. It’s in my blood to hate them.

Imagine your earliest entry into football is hating the team you are watching for two seasons.

My footballing ambition at 7 years old was to see this new Stevenage team one day play Hitchin in the league and beat them. Thanks to Martin Gittings a few years later back healing it over the line , I was privileged to have been part of the loudest band of brotherhood to have walked from Topfield to the station.

They are for us old uns the most hated team we could ever play, closely followed of course by Woking and Barton Rovers.

It's an olde English slang term from the 1500s for itinerant peasant people who keep small numbers of cattle on common land.

It's believed to relate to the brown film, or scum, they leave behind on stagnant water sources they use to water their herd, (if 3 skinny disease-ridden cows can be called a herd).

And the "Cow Commoners" have the historic grazing rights over Top field and the wider common land opposite the ground. Hence the link.

A few yrs back wimpey or alike were trying to buy whole land for new builds, promising to build them a new ground opposite Kingshot school on the bypass..This time seems they will build on half of the land only redeveloping ground in return.
