Interesting post showing aerial photo from 1955 and a couple of photos of the old stands. Some great early info including Austins involvement - they still sponsor the south stand today of course.
Edit: Chuds… first ever game was 1884 against Biggleswade! 😊

Taken from Stevenage Football Archive’s website, where you can find a lot more photos/info along these lines: https://www.stevenagefootballarchive.com/museum-ground.php

Ten years after Biggleswade Town formed, if it is them they played. Last season was their 150th anniversary...which they celebrated by being relegated.

The photo is looking Northwards, with Sish Lane and Letchmore Road at the top of the image, the ground is roughly where the Railway station/ police station are now, the one bridge over the railway line is chequers bridge road i believe, which now bends on the east side to go behind what was the Eagle building/ the new flats.
The large industrial side on the other side of the railway line to the ground is what was knocked down and the leisure park built there.

Very close. The ground in the picture doesn’t quite touch where the police station is now. It is the railway station southern car park (possibly part of the police station car park), Lytton Way, and the new bus station. The access road behind the new bus station that passes behind the leisure centre is the old London Rd, that in this picture runs up against the East Stand. When you drive north along Lytton Way from the police station you’re driving through the middle of the old pitch!

Can’t see the photo as I don’t do Facebook. However all the comments are as I remember. The old London Road used to have a crossroads with Six Hills Way controlled by traffic lights and then carried on in a straight line South towards B&Q. That’s brought back some memories from my childhood. Who can remember when Fairlands Way was a dead - end and you had to turn left into St George’s Way (no swimming pool roundabout) . Funny enough Fairlands Way was originally quite a short dual carriageway having another dead-end immediately East of the Western junction with Bedwell Crescent.
Anyway, I won’t go on as this must be quite boring!😁

I don't remember those bits, but before my time that.
But as you mention B&Q, I do remember when it was in the Old Town near the coach and horses, accessed from Primett Road, and where B&Q is now was the dump.
Btw, even if you don't have a FB account, you can probably still see the picture if you click the link as its on a public group?

Plus further up from the tip was the original Times club and they then moved to Roaring Meg which at time was just a field.

Mum and Dad used to drag me to Country & Western night at the Times club back when punters carried Colt 45 replicas on their bullet belt.
Probably about 1980?
Vague memories of the C&W club nights moving to The Pyramid shaped estate pub (The oval?) at some point.

They ran all the way down London Rd. If you go to the foot of Ditchmore Lane - where the blue footbridge heads over to Tesco, through the Tesco car park exit, past the back of the leisure centre and ultimately towards B&Q, there were several houses spread down London Road. Many of the mature trees in the town centre were originally part of the back gardens of these large villas with the town centre built around them. The continuation of the London Rd houses still exist opposite the post office sorting centre.

That is interesting, I once worked at the council offices on the old dump site and never really wondered why those stranded houses were there.

You may or may not know that London Rd used to pass the other side of the six hills, where the cycle track is now, and continued straight up to the high street. Thus the houses were originally set a bit further back from the road than they are now. There are photos of it online but don’t ever have any success posting photos on here.

If you ever have the misfortune to be at the crematorium in Bragbury End, in the first 'waiting room' bit, on the right hand side there's a photo of an Austin's horse-drawn hearse in front of those houses, specifically, the one my brother lives in.

The factory on industrial side I think was mainly Geo W King buildings. Also somewhere near ground should be the original Our Mutual Friend pub.

Yes Geo W King a big engineering company on the other side of the rail track opposite the ground.
Saw my first Stevenage game there in late 50s - we lost something like 0-6 !
The old London Road of course was the Great North Road i.e. the A1 as we know it.
There was a lodging house there where my father stayed while waiting for a Corporation house to allow us to then move up from London.
