I never used to be into women’s football but I find these days that as I love the sport so much I can get into watching any version of it - women’s, kids etc. i can find some grassroots games just as exciting as watching the men’s game. So I’m becoming much more interested in the women’s game.

It's okay, it's not mandatory. I always find it odd that people go out of their way to say how much they don't like watching/doing something, rather than just not watching/doing it

I mean it doesn’t. That’s a very simplistic way of looking at it. Like saying all car crashes are due to the fact Formula 1 still exists.

Funny that negativity (perceived or otherwise) is always the spark of bigger debates. This place is as silent as the grave when we’re playing well, busier than Piccadilly Circus when we’re not, for example.

I really don't get some of the reactions either, it isn't like NorfolkIan said women cannot play football or shouldn't play football, or anything offensive or sexist, merely queried whether others have tried to get into the tournament and failed as he did.

For the avoidance of doubt, I should point out that the edit was because the poster had edited the wrong post (about Blackpool's psf) but then someone replied so couldn't re-edit it. It was not to remove anything offensive or censor anything.

The ebb and flow of the women’s game is different to that of the men’s, much in the same way it differs from division to division and country to country in men’s football. It’s not necessarily worse, but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea.
Wiegman’s England can draw a lot of parallels to Southgate’s England. The main difference being that she got the team over the line. Twice. In international football particularly (all football as far as I’m concerned) results are all that matter. The Lionesses continually get results. They and Sarina Wiegman should be given nothing but praise for doing so.
I wasn’t as invested as if it was the men’s team winning an international tournament I’ll admit but I’m still very glad we won. I didn’t enjoy the game as such but the result is what it’s all about.

For me Women's football is a different sport to Men's football so they shouldn't be grouped or classed the same. Like you wouldn't say Rugby League and Rugby Union are the same sport.
England haven't won a major tournament since 1966 is still a true statement to me as in that context we are talking about men's football.
England also won the world cup in 2005 (rugby) and in 2019 (cricket) but those aren't the same discipline/sport, like last night wasn't.
So the statement should read greatest night in English Women's Football history.

You’re comparing men’s football and women’s football which is the same sport with the same rules with rugby league and rugby union. Which is a different sport with different rules.
It’s like saying the Negro Leagues was a different sport to MLB. It’s not.

From some of the replies it’s clearly not just me. Take the point that it’s kind of a different sport. Anyway I’m pleased that they won as I am whenever any team/individual wins when representing England in any sport. And I’m pleased for all those that do enjoy it and are currently in an elated mood. Sorry if that sounds patronising but I genuinely mean it. Doesn’t change the fact that I don’t enjoy watching it.

Take your point. I suppose it’s that normally I enjoy watching football and I’ve tried watching the women’s Euros but it’s not the same. Can’t really put my finger on why. With all the hype I wondered if it was just me. Anyway, I was just trying to to start a conversation as I thought that was what this place is for, although I appreciate it’s not Boro related.
Edit: And no, I wouldn’t post about all the stuff I don’t enjoy watching on TV, but this is football-related on a football forum.

I don't begrudge them victory. Fair play. What does annoy me is the constantly pedalled narrative that the women's game is great and we should all enjoy it and not criticise it. Take tonight's penalty shootout for example, although it wasn't as bad as the semi. Some of those spot-kicks were so f'ing dire that a 4 year-old could have saved them yet the commentators were screaming 'what an incredible save'

Find ways to win when not necessarily the best. Lot to be admired about that mentality even if the sport/quality isn't to your liking.

England men lost on penalties to Italy men. England men were the better side.
England Women beat Spain Women on penalties. Spain women were the better team (and world champions).
Ergo, men bottled it, women didn't.

Women's football isn't the same as men's football.
But it's elite sport. And currently we are arguably the best women's team in Europe at it.
The game is still developing. As a product and as a technical/tactical/physical endeavour.
It wasn't that long ago that women's football was very much part-time.
Now top players are on £10k a week, covering the same distances as the men and producing similar physical data in terms of sprints etc. Coaches and analysts even at our level are now routinely 'A licence' holders.
England, France, Italy, Germany and the USA all have as many top women's teams as men's teams.
The 17th biggest football club in the UK by attendance is now Arsenal ladies. Their budget will soon outstrip some Championship clubs. Thats a fucking meteoric rise! Only a few years ago they were playing in front of 400-800 at Boreham Wood.
The fan base demographic is way younger, more family orientated, soon those families won't be able to afford WSL tickets, it's the nature of the way sport develops commercially, so there will be a big pool of women, girls and families who want to watch family friendly football, men's or women's, it probably doesn't matter, it's about being affordable. Small clubs like Stevenage (mens and womens) need to be eyeing that market up carefully.
But if you don't like it. That's OK.
