Relegation Points

Did a very small sample of the points needed to stay up, pre and post covid. So in the 4 years leading up to Covid 2019/2020 season, teams needed an average of 48.75 points to stay up. In the 5 years since Covid the total to stay up has been 44.4 points, with the highest points total of any relegated team since Covid being 47 points, in 2020/21. I also looked at the Premier League and its a similar theme.

So in conclusion, covid has made playoff teams better. How come all the medical reports have missed this?!

Finish with more points than you've played matches and you'll usually be OK.

That's my simple way of looking at it.

Thats about right although in the Championship Luton went down with 49pts and the year before B'ham came to see us, for one season, with 50pts. To be completely safe in any league 50+ will just about do it.

Positive goal difference should see you safe. Doubt (m)any have gone down with a positive goal difference.

Sheffield Utd last did it in the old 3rd Division, so our tier, in 1981 So yes, very rare.

Man City did it back in 1938 too. But that was in black and white, silent movie two points for a win days.

Still only two points for a win in 1981 when Sheffield United managed that ‘achievement’

Yep easy to forget that then plus remember they used to some point used goal average not goal difference in placings. Can also remember, from MOTD games at least in to early seventies only had one sub.

And defending consisted of no one bothering to mark or track the attackers, until they got near the penalty box and then assault was allowed
