No surprises. Couple of questions though.

Who decided to give Simpson a two year deal (at least, or one with an option in his favour) last year?

What is there to discuss with List other than where the exit door is?

Louis Appéré
Ellis Bates
Charlie Goode
Rylee Mitchell
Aaron Pressley
Jamie Reid
Jordan Roberts
Tyreece Simpson
Jake Young

And the contract talks with List would be quite brief...

I don't need to tell you because I didn't make the statement. I really don't understand why you think the club would pretend it is talking to a player if it isn't. There is no reason to.

Houghton could be a replacement for King/JFC, doesn't mean Freeman is gone. And talking to basically means both parties are open to coming to a deal so are staying in touch about it, rather than they are continuously discussing terms. MacDonald would have been open to staying with us, but as soon as daddy Evans came a calling he ran off with his tail wagging like the good little loyal lapdog that he is.

Well the talks with List have lasted a week what are we talking about.Assume we must have offered some sort of contract , perhaps a yr but perhaps he wants two.
Also not sure what we are talking to Freeman about unless it's a some sort of just being around club thing to see how he progresses but no contract.

Ouch Baldock, that is tough. Be careful what you wish for! Trite I know... but it is always on my mind.

For me Goode, Roberts and Reid are *key* players, and fixtures in our first eleven if firing. Granted that's an "if"!

Reidy in particular needs a full pre-season and some service. But he's a player. Witness second half vs Cambridge (away) - electric.

Much more to come from Appere. He's intelligent, if lacking killer instinct to date. He'll benefit from games.

Young will s**t goals for someone. It could still be us?! Who knows haha

I'd rather we kept all of the forwards we didn't loan out last season and give them some creative players to provide with chances.

I think Charlie Goode can be a real asset too after a pre-season, he's been goode a lot more than he hasn't.

O/T Star Strikers

By Sev16/5 20:08Fri May 16 20:08:39 2025In response to Re: Our ListTop of thread

We have had lots of strikers and good ones at that, but the following are the ones that stand out as being the sort of talisman star strikers of their time.

Hayles
Elding
Alford
Morison
Godden

They'd win the Best Actor role as opposed to Supporting Actor (like Crawshaw, Maamria, Pearson and many others like Leadbeater, Grazioli, Zoko)

Before my time I assume Gittings was A List.

In our 2nd conference winning season and league two promotion seasons we shared the strikers job and to very good effect with lots of "supporting actors" - the likes of Griffin, Yemi, Boylan, Sills and Beardsley, C. Reid etc and then Rose, Norris and J.Reid.

I don't know what my point was. Just remembering the last time we had a star striker. Reid I suppose is the closest we have come to it recent times, but doesn't make it onto my list. Newton had promised but didn't make it.

Gutted about Edwards. One of our players that was actually exciting to watch and made things happen. Very rarely wasted the ball, but still tried to be creative. Not sure if it was genuinely injuries why he wasn't selected or just didn't fit with what the management wanted. Offered a hell of a lot more than Roberts, that's for sure.

Because he has missed most of the past couple of seasons injured, missed most of his time with us injured, and we have just wasted money on JFC being unavailable for the past year injured.

Taking a chance on him (and JFC) made sense, as a club we sometimes have to do that on a player we otherwise wouldn't stand a chance with, but we are a tiny club in L1 and cannot afford to be throwing money at players we are unlikely to see much of.

FWIW, he is the one I was on about when I posted around a week ago about being surprised by one of the players we had released, but not the other two (Smith and JFC) because I thought we may take a chance on him next season, but fully understand why we haven't.

Sure, all understood and agreed. I saw your previous post too and wondered who you were referring to. I understand the injury situation, but that doesn’t stop the sense of frustration or disappointment that ostensibly excellent players are released whilst some total bilge is still here.

I think we should just play 5-5-0

A couple of midfielders who can buy a foul to enable us to lump it in to the box once or twice a game, and 8 big defensively minded players.

Spend the money you would have spent on attacķers on bigger, better defenders.

Rely on clean sheets and headed goals from one of 5 6'4" + defenders from the odd set piece.

Simples. Play to Rev's natural defence focussed strengths.

Not met Kyle but the following is on my mind...

Obviously talented

Went missing for 1.5 months-ish at end of season. This was his chance to prove his fitness

No idea if any suspicions are fair. Maybe he's broken. Maybe he feels discomfort and cannot play at his best. Bodies are strange. I train to a decent level; sometimes your body feels *knackered*, but you learn you can work through it. You sometimes feel better for it! Not everyone feels the same.

Our staff have made a judgement for the best of the club.

Idiots like me speculating on the internet help nothing at all, but c'est la vie

Yes, I must admit I snorted in disbelief to see Edwards and JFC ridded off, but Pressley and Simpson retained. Couldn’t make it up really, could you?

(And yes, I do understand *why* Edwards/JFC might have been binned, but still…!)

They are retained because they are still under contract, otherwise they would be in the same boat as the other two. But at least they are able to actually make the matchday squad on a regular basis.

Hopefully not. I'd sooner have JFC clapping from the dug-out than Simpson f*cking things up on the pitch. But yes I appreciate that he and Elvis are under contract, though hopefully we can ship one or both of them out.

When a player is under contract you can't just get rid of them. Well you can, but you'd have to pay them out their contract. So you may as well keep them and offer them to other clubs.

Note it was termed players under contract. Not players we really want to keep.

Only real surprise is that Pressley has been retained (and Simpson but assumed that he was under contract).

A solid enough base to build upon in the transfer market.

Some of them will likely be told "you're under contract but you won't be in our plans, knock yourself out looking for a move and we'll let you go for nothing if it helps you get playing again, or we'll loan you out or you can train with the academy lads.

*wingers

Sign two wingers. Play 442 with Young and Appéré up front. It'll be like peak Chester with Clare and Stamp. Both with get 20+ goals and we'll be top 6 easy.

But no, it's more fashionable to pass it around the back, creating nothing.

Maybe the teams he played for against us played to his strengths. I'd get rid of both if we intend to continue to play the way that lead us to barely having a shot on target each game.

Quite.

We don't have the headroom for sentiment or the hope that an injury-prone player will get a decent run. Harsh reality of being a club our size at this level. Need the wages for someone who'll play and can hopefully improve the team (as JFC did/would) on a consistent basis.

What is there to negotiate with Freeman? Be lucky to play again before new year. Let him recuperate at club but not with a contract surely. With List I have no problem if he goes. We need more quality in the squad

No surprise.

Don't even remember where Evans was on loan at, but he never popped up for regularly scoring (so would fit in with our strikers etc.).

And whilst Hicks may have seemed highly rated, and looked reasonable enough whenever I saw him, being loaned out to clubs like Potters Bar is far too low of a level to have made it for us in League One, unless he ran the game regularly. And when I watched Biggleswade Town beat Potters Bar in the FA Trophy this season, he was pretty anonymous.

Suspect they will end up joining the long list of our former Academy players who go on to spend their career playing locally at Steps 2-4, which is still decent enough, but far off the levels of League One football.

Since when was "Players invited back for pre-season" a category alongside Retained, Released, Talks ongoing?

I assume it means "We dont want you, you're released but if you cant find another club, pop back in and if we are really desperate and haven't replaced youwe might offer you half a season on a reduced wage because you'll be desperate for a job"
