Retain and Release List
Views: 1943
Here we are, League One 24/25 is over and we achieved our main objective - consolidate our position in the division and survive.
Likelihood is we’ll start to hear some news pretty quickly this week as players start their conversations with the club tomorrow.
Ahead of that, let’s run some opinions on how we think the squad will shape up.
Tate Ashby-Hammond - Under contract, keep
Murphy Cooper - Loan, return to QPR
Rylee Mitchell - Contract unknown, keep and loan
Dan Butler - Contract expiring, retain
Lewis Freestone - Under contract, keep
Luther James-Wildin - Under contract, keep (I think he will be sold this summer)
Kane Smith - Contract expiring, release
Carl Piergianni - Under contract, keep
Dan Sweeney - Contract unknown, retain
Charlie Goode - Contract expiring, retain
Harvey White - Under contract, keep
Eli King - Loan, return to Cardiff
Dan Phillips - Under contract, keep
Nick Freeman - Contract unknown, retain (injured)
Louis Thompson - Under contract, retain (injured)
Jake Forster-Caskey - Contract expiring, release
Jordan Roberts - Under contract, keep
Dan Kemp - Under contract, keep
Kyle Edwards - Contract unknown, retain
Ryan Doherty - Under contract, keep
Elliott List - Contract expiring (optional year), release
Jamie Reid - Contract unknown, release/sell
Louis Appere - Under contract, sell
Aaron Pressley - Under contract, sell
Tyreece Simpson - Under contract, sell
Jake Young - Under contract, keep
Brandon Hanlan - Loan, return to Wycombe (sign if released from Wycombe)
Some of the above is likely to be incorrect as not all contract details are publicly available.
I assume we will be in the market for:
1x GK
1 x RB
1 x LB
1 x CB
1 x CDM
1 x AMC
2 x W/IF (subject to whether we want to adopt wingers)
2 x ST

Of the three players we have let go thus far, only one is a very slight surprise to me, but all three make perfect sense for our club.
I suspect none of our final release will come as much of a surprise to anybody once revealed.
Much of our squad is under contract which gives us a solid base on which to build in order to improve next season. Let's see who we can bring in.

I'm guessing two of the three are Pressley and Simpson?

Our squad is uninspiring and dull, but it is very safe.
Personally, I’d move on from Roberts, Reid, Sweeney, Buttler, White. But they’re all players Revs trusts and I think we will keep them all so I won’t bother adding them to my release list:
Release/Sell:
Kane Smith - injury prone.
Jake Forster Caskey - injury prone.
Elliot List - Time to move on. Not enough goal contributions.
Tyreece Simpson - obviously not good enough.
Aaron Pressley - obviously not good enough.
Louise Appere - massively disappointing. Not good enough.
Loanees:
Murphy Cooper - not coming back.
Eli King - I like him, take or leave depending on wages.
Brandon Hanlan - As above.
We need to do better in the loan market in the strikers department.
If we want to compete for anything higher than mid table, we need someone to score 20 goals. We aren’t going to sign anyone who is already accomplished, and I don’t think there’s much out there in terms of non league talent, so we really need to find a gem of a loanee player up the leagues.
Signings to prioritise:
ST - starter
ST - rotation
LB - cover
RB - cover
RCB - first team, must be highly athletic.
GK - not sure if we need cover or a first team keeper. Taye has been very good for us for 2 years, but his appearances this season have been quite concerning, he clearly has MAJOR issues with shots at the near post.

The issue with the safety thing is that everyone else will be trying to improve and our safe squad gets another year older.

The other thing is you can't bin off all the lower earners and the be surprised if we don't have the budget to do better.
For me we should be looking at players likely to be on better wages that are underperforming, e.g. Roberts.
Think I must be the only person on here that would keep List over some of our other strikers. He usually seems to freshen up the team when he comes of the bench.

I'd keep List. Quicker than Reid.
I like getting the ball forward quickly with pace and width. The complete opposite to Revell's style.

Is the problem the striker or the service or lack of it, to the striker?
Are we missing that many chances?
Are great balls into dangerous areas being played but not anticipated by the strikers?

Re: Retain and Release List

Bit of both, of course, but one thing that is very evident is our strikers don't play like they are goal hungry.
At the end of the match at Bolton for instance, somebody (may have been the chance that Bates created) had the ball by the byline and played a decent ball across but none of our strikers moved for it. None of them dropped off for the cutback, none of them jumped in front of the defender, they all just stood stationery next to the defender, hoping something may happen, without trying to *make* anything happen. And that always happens, they basically mark themselves. A proper striker would be gambling on the ball being played across and getting in front of the defender, even if just their foot. Look at somebody like Vardy and his runs in the box and his movement to make space. Our lot never do it so even if we have the ball there is nobody to pick out in the box, or nobody making a run to bury a good ball across the box.
The same also often happens when Harvey, or whoever takes them, plays a freekick across into a dangerous area, nobody is close to getting on the end of it.
This needs to be as much about hunger as anything Revs or the coaches may do on the training ground. If it isn't instinctive, they can work on it, but if the players aren't going to have the appetite for it in a game, we are in trouble.
Too many of our players are too comfortable and need to either seriously step up next season, or be shipped out. And none moreso than Roberts.

Perhaps we should lower the standard wages and increase the goal bonuses for our strikers, might focus their minds a bit on being more hungry

Then they'd go and play for a club offering a bigger base salary. Demand for consistent goalscoring strikers is much higher than supply.

If as a collective their movement is poor it’s suggest it’s more to do with their expectation of a non existent or poor delivery meaning that they don’t bother. They’re professional footballers so they all know what they should be doing.
Harvey Whites free kicks, travelling at 2 miles an hour and lofted to the back post almost every time are hardly worth attempting to get on the end of. No idea why he takes so many free kicks or set pieces. I’m sure you’ll pull some stat out but the eye test tells me that generally they’re woeful and his teams mates efforts are reflective of this.

Our free kicks and corners are generally poor at best. Beggars belief how often we either hit the first man or it sails over everyone

No player should "not bother". That is simply not good enough and not acceptable. As Balders says, a player should be making those runs multiple times per game regardless, as if it pays off once or twice you have your goal(s).
Every single player who takes our FKs does that, so it is clearly instructed rather than the player taking it deciding to do so. And this dates back three years too, it isn't a recent thing. Ball played to the back post for Pidge to head back across for somebody. I didn't understand it under Evans, same as I don't now.

Agree it’s not acceptable, but it’s what seems to happen.
In our first season under Evans the back post set piece seemed to work (At least in my mind it did) and we scored a few goals from them - pretty sure Pidge and Sweeney were in double figures between them? It no lingers works and I’ve also no idea why we persist with it or don’t work on another variation.

Didn’t JFC dislocate his shoulder at Brizzle Rovers?
Maybe it’ll heal funny and he’ll be able to launch the ball to the penalty box!
In all seriousness, a giant throw is a highly underrated trait, they cause more issues than a corner.

Lineker is always banging on about keeping making those thankless runs, 20, 30 times a game, thats how you score "simple" goals.

100%, at least a couple of times a game a player or two will do something genuinely unexpected and displaying really good intelligence that makes the opposition fans groan. You know 9 times out of 10 it'll then either be played back where it came from or run down a blind alley for an attacking throw (which we are also bad at).
To be fair, our League 2 gambit of "Danny Rose throws himself in the direction of the ball and his man fouls him because they're not very good" was probably never working a level up.

Tried that with Jason Cowley.
And then remember when we signed about 4 non League strikers. Can't even remember all their names now. Had to look them up - Effiong, Dinanga, Akinwande and Tyrone Marsh. None of them really shone.
Perhaps a case of having too many in one season.
But worth giving one a go each season, if the money isn't ridiculous.
