Handed a 14 month prison sentence.
Sad all round.

This is indeed sad. Obviously I don’t know every detail of the circumstances of his case, but I always found him such a bloody nice bloke - really gentle, approachable, polite - and a career professional footballer of course, that I don’t like to think of him blowing it all by causing trouble for people and damaging his reputation and life chances like this. I really like the fact that he had ‘succeeded’ in life and been so decent with it… meh! Real shame and I hope he finds a way to secure a brighter future.

He’ll be out in 6 months and then sign for Plymouth. They love a criminal

Left his guilty plea to the last minute to maximise his free time knowing he was going down.
Putting the victim's family through the wringer
Shameful when he knew he was guilty from minute 1.

Pretty strange to me how he could keep, in his own mind, keep playing since then. Not defending him at all but weird.

I would imagine training and playing daily, which is all he will have known since a young age, will have helped him cope with the incident and the guilt, whilst awaiting sentencing.

Re: Lucas Akins

He wasnt awaiting sentencing.
He was putting that off by not pleading guilty.
(An earlier guilty plea may have secured him 10% off what he got. A late guilty pleasure, as is his right, is still going to save him 20% on what he might have got had he elected trial by jury and been found guilty).
But your point about maintaining a sense of normality is spot on. Footballers charged or on bail for even more serious offences where very long sentences are likely still seem to be able to perform.

It’s his job. Would you quit your job if you had got in trouble?
(Ignore the fact that it’s insane that teams are signing someone who’s in trouble…)

Well, I'd imagine I'd be tending to the garden or out on my ear.

It is pretty remarkable that I've seen at least two guys play for the Boro who either already had or would go on to kill a man.
Thinking about it I guess this was pretty common in the 50s.

Tesfaye Bramble.
I assume Gavin Grant was the other one Freemo was talking about.

Yeah, Grant played for us the same season we had Alistair John, who was stabbed himself whilst signed for us (not by Grant).
Edit: changed "playing for" to "signed for" as that made it sound even more dramatic

I’ve been nicked for speeding fairly regularly over the last 40 years. Does that count?!
