So I see he's out for the remaining games with a groin issue he's been carrying for a while.

I hope so.
With our record of buying creative double figure goal scoring talent we should definitely cash in on one when we find them.
Because we will definitely spend the money on a great replacement.

I would sell. Need to rebalance the team next season and not rely on Kemp for everything going forward.
Could be a blessing if it forces us to play a different way with a proper winger maybe. The strikers might actually score goals.

Scored 4 since March which has helped. But the overall return from 4 or 5 strikers isn't great.

Indeed, but I would also same the same for our defenders. In fact I was saying it to your brother and Holly in Bristol on Monday.
Pidge is our only defender with a league goal this season. Sweeney, Goode, Freestone and NT absolutely should be contributing from set-pieces.
Edit: And our midfielders. None from Freeman in 29 games before his injury (some played in defence, granted), none from Phillips, only one from King, two apiece from Louis T and Harvey, and only four from Roberts and List. Not enough.

Perhaps thats down to us always using Pidge as a target man from throws, corners and free kicks, he normally has two defenders to contend with, we need to mix things up on set pieces

Charlie scored at Norwich. He also takes the klong throws, so can't be in the middle.

Over his career Charlie has a decent scoring record. You can't finish if you don't create.

Further supports my feeling towards how we try to create goals, through Kemp. It's either to the detriment of others strengths or we don't have the players on the same wavelength.
So whilst when it works it looks wonderful and Kemp looks class, I'd rather have a team where the midfield score goals and the defenders score goals a d the strikers then only need 10 a season. Thinking back to to glorious Conference winning days where goals came from absolutely everywhere (except Ronnie).
Bostwick, Robbo, Bridges, Laird, Byrom, Long, Cole as well as the strikers.
If Revell can get it working with Kemp then it could be glorious but I have my doubts it's achieveable.

We could always have Kemp, and other wingers/ midfielders who can create and score goals. They’re not mutually exclusive.

Before tonight I was thinking 442 and Kemp plays in a position that doesn't exist in that.
If you're playing wingers you want two strikers up top. And you need a defensive midfielder and a box to box midfielder. Having Kemp in a do-what-you-want role means you have to sacrifice one of those and completely unbalances the team again.
However having seen tonight, I'd be quite content playing that formation except have JFC or Thompson instead of White and Kemp instead of Roberts.
If Kemp was playing instead of Roberts tonight I bet we score.

Just one assist too.
And people wonder why I hope he leaves in the summer.
Edit: Harvey White, who seems to be roundly hated by our fans, has provided just one less goal contribution this season, in far less time on the pitch, and in a far less advanced position.
Edit 2: JFC has the same number of assists this season as Roberts. Lolz.

I don't hate White, I think he's quite a cultured footballer but he's a bit 'safe' with his sideways and backwards passing at times. (Which i think may be instructed rather than instinctive).
He's not a hard tackling CDM. But horses for courses as a 'quarterback' type of player he's got a decent future I think.

Our 20th player to make 50 League One appearances, tonight.
But still very young, has lots of potential and is much improved compared to his first season, especially with the defensive side.

If we sell Kemp and White plays in his role instead then we will be relegated, so in that scenario I wouldn't sell Kemp.
Now don't get me wrong Kemp has been out best player this season, but he doesn't fit into my preferred formation, unless you stick him out on the wing where he is less effective/influential.
I don't think many other teams would play the way we do with Kemp in that role and for that reason I don't think anyone would come in for him anyway.

I expect PW will want to recoup some of his £700k operating loss. If thats the case then it will be back to normal with recruitment within our budget...in other words young unproven players or players a bit crocked but with great pedigree.

Lets hope our assumptions are wrong and we keep all of our key players. If we are serious about next season and want to be an established League 1 club then we need the right tools in our toolbox. For us to hold on to our manager, keep the fans turning up and for us to progress then we will want to strengthen around our key players not weaken the structure.

Re: Kemp

My view is completely the opposite.
I think we will just continue to tread water and flirt with the bottom end of the table if we attempt to keep the best players in the squad.
If we truly want to become an established L1 side and occasionally look to compete at the top end, I believe we need to cash in on any sellable assets we have and take a different approach to recruitment/squad building.
We have the makings of an exciting young squad with potential. It may be a dangerous game to play, but if we can build around the likes of Louis T and most of the current defenders, flesh it out with a squad capable of keeping us in the division on the lowest possible budget, then we can try to sell players at their peak value year on year to give us a budget to work with for the following season

Luton will have seen Pidge struggle a bit pace-wise this season. He won't be a big money target for anyone, and we won't sell for peanuts.
And I don't think Phil is remotely interested in recouping his recent £700k+ investment. Long term he might when he sells up, but not for a while yet.
He isn't in football for the money, he isn't stupid.
