Transfer What Ifs

With it being the middle of the transfer window and murmurs and rumours seeming to be quiet on incomings, I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone knew of any historic stories of players who were close to singing or very close to joining but didn't - for the good or bad.
Any ITK's who can enlighten on any transfer what ifs?

The transfer saga that was Stokely Mason.

I have heard we signed Adam El Abd over Gabriel Osho, who was an important part of Luton’s team that got promoted to the premiership. Now plays in Ligue 1

Adam was a key player for us though so unconvinced we didn't fare well out of that.

As a manager one, when PW originally tried to get Evans while he was still at Gillingham. They demanded six-figure compensation so he appointed Tisdale instead.
Worked out being more expensive for both clubs as Gillingham had to pay Evans off and PW had to pay Tisdale off.
