I for one am pleased he has made this move.

The journey he has taken us on over the last couple of years will leave us with memories that will last our lifetimes.

He leaves with his legacy intact unlike others before him.

Better to have loved and lost than never loved at all as the saying goes.

I was listening to the Stick to Football show (Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Jill Scott, Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane) and they were chatting with Les Ferdinand. He was talking about his time as Sporting Director at QPR, and it sounds like Michael Beale was doing wonders there before he left for Rangers. Sounds like he was very well liked by the players. Given what Ferdninand was saying about the financial situation at QPR, he would have been working with a tight budget, as well.

Ian Burchnall is another interesting one. He's a very good coach. He has a few sessions up on the Coaches' Voice website, and they are excellent (some of the best on the site, in my opinion). Not sure what his managerial career has been without looking him up, though.

His managerial spell was not a success and he was rightfully sacked at the time.

He's also been a key member of the coaching set up for our most successful two seasons in well over a decade. He's learnt from our most successful manager since Westley and will have developed his skills a lot in that time.

It's not disrespectful to say that you'd rather we appoint someone else on a permanent basis. I'd rather we went for someone with proven experience at L1 level or higher.

But some of the negativity on here is a bit harsh. He deserves some respect and is more than qualified for an interim role.

Certainly an interesting point of view. Evans is a clever guy and knows football also knows what?s in store more than we do. Maybe he felt he had gone as far as he could and he?s hit is ceiling with the club.

He?s certainly not one to stick around for too long regardless. We are in such a better position than we were 2022 so for that we must all be grateful.

Now it?s over to PW to make the correct decision for the club with the next appointment.

Why would he sign a contract until 2026 if he thought this was a dead end club?
If he was unhappy, signing would make it more difficult for any future employer to justify the compensation to employ him.

I imagine the new contract was based on interested earlier in the season. Midseason was not the right time for him but a new contract for his loyalty he gets extra ££, we get protection over him on a longer deal plus a deal is agreed for a compensation package so the club get a decent amount and makes sure things don?t get messy if someone comes calling which ultimately happens .

Can?t see anyone on football management turning down extra money and extra security in that fickle world even if he knew he had gone as far as he could. Especially if things went south next season bigger payout for him but it?s all speculation only he knows what?s going on his head.

Regardless he?s gone now and we need to move on and do the best for the club. We have a stable, financially secure club with a solid squad thanks to Steve Evans, it?s now down to PW to help build on that and keep it all together we are not in panic mode, like we where a few years back but the next appointment is crucial

I am really surprised and saddened by Steve Evans leaving us. I like many others , thought his fit with us was made in heaven. Geography, smaller club to mould to his vision, no pressure except to keep us in League 1, flexible approach to bringing in players, a chairman to work with having realistic ambitions and most of all an open minded fan base who appreciated him.
If Rotherham have paid Boro compensation they will want results next season.
Welcome to the Rotherham world of pressure Mr Evans, nothing other than promotion will do!!

I don't actually think this is the worst.

I know I have been pretty negative towards Steve in general, but hear me out...

We have grown massively over the last two seasons. Obviously, Steve and his staff have been the ones to take us from the absolute shit, to where we are now, but that hasn't been without the negatives.

I fully, fully appreciate what Steve has done to turn the club around, but I absolutely will not miss all the bullshit antics that come with it.

Hopefully the last two seasons have shown that this club does have some potential, given how well our crowds have improved with some sustained success, and we are in a pretty good position to recruit a good calibre manager who can stabilize us in League One.

Now is the time for someone who has a track record of stability with a smaller club, and not the time for a gamble. Hopefully Phil has learned that going out and getting the best person available worked with the appointment of Steve, and that saving money on the manager recruitment isn't the strategy for success.

I feel cautiously optimistic that we can take all the momentum of the last two years, find a manager that can keep us competitive in this division, and enjoy success without the bullshit.

IMO we need a manager in the same mould. That is how we get success at this club.

Haha. No. But our club has an identity, and I'd like a manager who works with that, rather than trying to play like Arsenal on a Stevenage budget.

There's probably a middle ground between being overly reliant on long ball huff-and-puff football, and trying to play like Arsenal.

Playing ultra-direct will only take us so far.

We have every reason to be optimistic in terms of everything but the need to acquire a new manager, and on that front I am very, very, very pessimistic. Walking around with a THE END IS NIGH sandwich board pessimistic. Grateful we still have a minimum two season of League football pessimistic.

Yes. I was hoping we will have learnt our lesson not to hire an inexperienced cheap option*, but then with Mousinho being such a success at Portsmouth fear it might make us still go down that route. But it's different for a small club like us.

As we have grown in stature as a club I think we will have a wider pool of candidates to choose from and some proper experienced managers may be looking to us.

*without being reckless with finances of course.

I was thinking more like someone like Cowley than say Alan Pardew. They don't have to be old and had twenty clubs that got relegated.

Just someone who has been competitive in League One or Two. A promotion on their CV or playoff experience etc.

Agree with most of this, especially given how things ended at Gillingham. He's left the club in an immeasurably better place than when he came in and likewise the club gave him the platform that helped to rebuild his reputation.

Hopefully PW and LH have a better idea of what to look for in a manager now given some of the past appointments.

This is very sad news, but I totally understand why he has left to join a bigger club and more money offered per week.
He did this when at Mansfield, he immediately resigned to take over at a bigger club, Peterborough. Can't be angry at the man for taking the job at a club that pays higher than his most recent club.

Who will he sign from us in the summer, who do you reckon?

Who should we get as the new manager for next season? Please, not Alex Revell, as he will only lead us down to a relegation fight again. Who would you like to see as new manager?

A good one hopefully.

It's what makes us different to clubs like Mansfield who threw torrents of abuse at him.

We have had two fantastic years, promotion, a competitive league one season, fa cup memories. He has been a great manager and whilst it's shame he has left, that's football.

I'll be applauding him back. And then disagreeing with his post match interview about the referee.

The way he?s gone about it irks me a bit (he could have waited until the end of the season) but the overwhelming feeling towards him is positive.

Assume there was perhaps a ?clubs in a higher division? clause in his deal which meant it had to be done before Rotherham aren?t a club in a higher division any more.

Not grateful as such, just that he was enjoying the journey and could see another season ahead in a place he was well-supported. I don?t imagine it getting any better for us than Evans/Raynor, they gave me great confidence that they understood the ethos here perfectly and fostered the right spirit.

I think there would be only a handful of clubs (Peterborough and Rotherham, or of course any Championship side) that he would have left us for.

For example I don't see him having wanting to leave for Bristol Rovers/Leyton Orient if they'd come in for him.
