Blue cards

By Balders (BALDOCKBORO)8/2 21:54Thu Feb 8 21:54:39 2024

Football's lawmakers Ifab are to trial sin-binning players and issuing blue cards, it will be announced on Friday.

The PL have already ruled out being part of the trial.

The EFL haven't ruled either way yet but it's probably gonna be semi pro level leagues I'm guessing to start with.

Tum Sills says it has had a positive impact in the league he manages in.

Thoughts?

Bit confused by it.

What types of offence get a blue card vs yellow card?

What happens if you get two blue cards? Does that equal a red?

will this mean another league Official to be on the touch-line to control the sin-bin.
maybe if the football league started to look at the standard of refs and linesman which is atrocious and
save the money on V.A.R that still makes wrong decisions every week due to the idiots looking at their screens do not have a clue on the rules of football.
the standard of F.A Officials would improve the game if they were trained at a higher standard.

Good question. But maybe it does. Didn't realise tíl France v Ireland last weekend that two yellows make a red - and a yellow is a sin binning. I'm aware it's different criteria tho.

Mostly designed to reduce and punish dissent (in a stronger way than just a booking).

But as I said further down in the thread, there is no need for a new card, just do what they already do in the lower levels of NL and give a yellow, but with it also carrying a ten minute sin bin.

I'm not opposed to it, but want to see some clearer guidance.

E.g. what happens in mass dissent, players surrounding the ref etc. If a team gets say, a red card and 3 players with blue cards, can the match carry on?

Lots of questions at the moment, but I think it would be enough of a deterrent to improve the game.

Stick an outfield player in goal or make a sub.

And then make another one when the 10 minutes are up otherwise you'd have 2 keepers on the pitch.

The penalised 'keeper wouldn't do it again.

Anything that might attract more people to refereeing is a good thing. If successful, hopefully this would translate into an overall higher standard of officiating across the professional leagues.

On a side note, SE would be blue-carded every other game.

I think it will mean a lot of teams down to 10 men will waste time, to run down the clock. It works in rugby because the clock stops during breaks in play.

They've been around at lower levels of the pyramid for a while. A lot of extra pressure on the referees as there are a number of variables to remember, but apparently it has cut down on dissent.

Aye, I watch a fair bit of Spartan South Midlands where it is used and it is quite good.

The first match after the trial started led to two players being sin binned within minutes of each other, but you rarely see it used at all now, so I think the players have cut down on the dissent.

They don't have a blue card though (and no idea why such a thing is needed), they get a normal yellow but are also sent to the bench, so any second yellow after they return and they are off, same as normal.

Something worth borrowing from rugby. Have had experience of it in Sunday league too and it works well there.

A different colour card is over complicating things. If you get a yellow (for any reason) you go in the sin bin. Two yellows make a red as per usual. Simple.

The standard of refereeing is in a constant state of decline. I wonder if it is partly due to technological changes/interference.

I definitely think technology has allowed refs to be more wishy washy as they know there is a safety net there for them. Interestingly on a Sunday morning I see referees who will try to rule with an iron fist and an “I’m the ref and I said so,” attitude and they’re the ones who get the least respect. Those who are transparent with the players and explain why they’re making the decisions they make always seem to be respected.

There will always be people willing to referee. They might not always be competent as we see with increasing regularity however.

There's so much inconsistency too. Was watching West Ham v Arsenal and fouls that would be a yellow card at 1-1 were let off because they were 6-0 down, so it didn't really matter.

Power

Or because they simply love football but can't play to the standard they'd like.

Or because they realise without them, there'd be no football and it's vital to a community.

One of the above.
