Two poor, poor teams and an poor ref equals one awful half of football.

This has convinced me Sarll needs to go before the end of the seaaon. Some of his decision are shocking.

Great away game.

Against a side in form, with a hostile crowd putting pressure on the ref. We did a professional job with a depleted squad. Clean sheet. 3 points. Never looked like conceding really.

Classic away performance.

If we did exactly that 23 games a season no one would complain.

It's when we do that and lose that's the problem.

And they would be right. Credit to Ben for closing down the keeper though, not the strongest part of his game.

Edit: and then going down injured at the restart and going off in front of the home fans grinning like an idiot at them. Which didn't wind them up at all.

The usual lame performance, especially away. As you say, two awful sides.

No tempo or intensity, no creativity, no cohesion, nobody moving into space or making runs (Newton aside) nobody wanting the ball, no obvious plan, poor and dull again.

Don't get me wrong, a huge and vital win, but let us not kid ourselves this is us 'turning a corner' or a 'great win' or 'great performance'.

We got lucky. Two away wins in any competition in four months and both because of goalkeeping blunders.

He was forced into two of the subs through injury but what the hell was that third one about? Bringing on Wilko to lead the line?! He won one header and put them in attacking us dangerously through an appalling pass. Fraser also looked lost and out of place all game when playing in front of the back four. TVC also got roasted all day at LB.

Bar the result, by far the biggest positive today was Conlon. Found space, wanted the ball, linked up play well, looked like he wanted it. One poor flick that nearly put us in trouble on the edge of our area mind.

Finally. Their fans are utter cretins.

We won. YAY!

First half especially TVC was fragile and getting roasted, his positioning was off, his body shape, being right footed was wrong, he was poor by the standards we've seen from him. Marginally better second half.

Fraser was lost in the bloody warm up, didn't improve as the game went on. why the fuck didn't Sarll play King there and Franks or Wilko at CB, even if King doesn't have the mobility, he could have 'sat' and held the position.

Conlon looked decent when he came on. Pett livened things up too.

A win is a win. Spawny, scrappy, ugly, disjointed, but it's something to encourage the squad and see what we can build from.

It looks like the injuries are piling up, Samuel, Whelpdale, Sheaf, Martin, Newton, Godden, Kennedy.

We might have to play our kids on Tuesday...oh

Wasn’t impressed with Conlon. Wasted a great chance by taking an almost impossible shot on when there were plenty of options to pass which chesterfield then countered from.

And a back heel almost in our own penalty box which went to an opposition player.

It was neither a great chance or almost impossible shot.

It wasn't almost in our area and didn't go to their player, their player and Smith went for it at the same time with Smith actually getting to it first and clearing it down field.

Passing was a much better option since his shooting angle was closed down and the flick was 10 or so yards from our box, no need for it.

Fair points. This is when people's preferences influence their opinions. Someone who likes Conlon won't have seen those a important things and instead focus on what tjey saw as good. Whereas for players they don't like so much they place more importance on the mistakes they make. Interesting.

My initial reaction was he had a good cameo. But those two things you mention I now remember as being a bit shit.

I mentioned the flick in my post. Despite being a fan of TC I was still fair in my assessment. Good ol' Puds, fair and honest.

The shooting thing is understandable too, look at Samuel also. They get such little time on the pitch they are desperate to make an impact. Whilst he did have options to square it he was also in a decent shooting position so you can't blame him for doing so. Also, how often do we moan about our team trying to pass it in rather than trying a shot from the edge of the area?

Prior to him coming on nobody moved for the ball. Look at when King ran 20-30 yards with the ball after about 35 mins today. He had four or five of our players in front of him. Not one made any movement to get away from his marker, not one found space or made a run for him, not one made any effort to show for or want the ball. As soon as Conlon came on he was finding space, wanting the ball at his feet and linking up play properly rather than aimless punts forward/into the channels. It was so noticeable and so refreshing.

Agree Tom has to make a statement on his rare appearances. Today he was skilful and calmed down many pressured areas. He bought us time and angles to pass and move forward. Yes a couple went wrong but the lad worked his socks off.

The MoM for me was Fraser, he protected the back 4 and was the main man for breaking up their midfield pass game. Can’t believe some of the negative vibes against him but that’s what this forum is about.

A mention for Danny Newton he covers more miles than a trainer for the London marathon but very skilfully. I will miss him when he goes

Agreed. Thought Fraser did great in that role. (That's not to say I want to see him there all the time)

And also thought Newton ran his socks off. Felt for him having to keep chasing balls when up front on his own having spent the first half running up and down the wing.

You can't be serious about Fraser?

Thought he looked lost. Yes he won some tackles and headers but his distribution was poor and he got in the way, as you'd expect from a CB.

I'm glad Darren has finally identified the need for a CDM in front of the back four, thus giving Smith and McKee the option of playing in front of the ball, and maybe didn't have many options, but Fraser really isn't that player.

Agree on Newton, his movement had some purpose today, looked more dangerous second half, less headless.

I didn't see his job as one of distribution or passing etc so didn't come into my reasoning. Getting in the way was the idea. I think he did what he was supposed to very well. We kept a clean sheet and they had very few chances as a result.

Yes I'd prefer an actual good CDM but as we don't have one...

It's clear now that King is now seen as unable to be played in the CDM role. Otherwise, the logical thing would be to play Franks at CB and King at CDM. Looks like the position needs to be addressed before the end of the month.

King and Wilmot having built a good CB partnership recently that has looked in the whole pretty strong may have been a factor in not wanting to put King in CDM.

The whole team (attackers) are guilty of shooting into defenders or passing it when they should shoot etc. Poor decision making is my biggest criticism of what are players with ability.

I haven't read this thread so haven't seen what you've said. Was just a general comment. I think Smith gets similar disparities in opinion.
