Thoughts on Saturday

Who's making the trip up north to Chesterfield? A tough match, a win would put us on a comfortable 38 points and hopefully a nice gap between us and the drop. We've had 4 months and no away win since Carlisle away, so please win Saturday boys! I like to think that we've started 2018 with a new outlook, 3 matches unbeaten, hopefully we can keep this momentum going and also get our 10th win of the season which is a good stat.

Travelling up by train, a few beers and very much looking forward to it! Thoughts?

Never say never! I think with correct tactics from Darren, I think the match is very winnable. Something that's gone under the radar, a win and that's 8 points from 12.

You had me at 'correct tactics from Darren'. Good banter.

I am going , as a general tea totaler, I am expecting to drink as many beers as goals we will score , though I think the fish and chips will be nice.

I expect us to change he line up from the changes Dazza has planned and stick with th same team pretty much that we have played since 1927.

i find that when we lose away from home 1-0 (to many bloody times)i need as much drink as i can take,
then get home and drink more watching the 20 second highlights at about midnight
hoping we get a late goal as i forget the score from the afternoon.
good job its not so cold this weekend chesterfield is cold in the summer.

I'm going. I fully expect us to continue our away form and lose or scrape a point at best.

I've see nothing in the last few weeks to make me think we have the tactical nous to win an away game. We'll put out the same side we put almost every week, in the same formation and probably lose the midfield battle.

If we do something completely different it'll be a nice surprise, even if it doesn't work it'll be something different to talk about.

If we snatch a win it'll be bloody lovely.

With this dour attitude I can't be disappointed. Things can only unfold as I expect, which will result in neutral emotions, or turn out better

I want to see TVC in the back 4.

I'd like to see 4-5-1 away from home, with a proper midfield of King, McKee, Smith, Pett and Samuel, supporting Godden or Newton up top.

We won't see King in midfield again - I'm guessing that he hasn't got the legs for box to box work anymore, otherwise he would have played there by now.

I'd like us to try something more radical

3-4-3

Wilmott, King and TVC
Pett, McKee, Smith, Kennedy
Samuel, Godden, Newton

Would require Kennedy to work a bit harder getting back, but would enable quick, pacy counter attacks and hopefully more space and chance for players like McKee to pick passes. It's obvious the usual 442 is not getting the results that we need and I don't believe we have the personnel for a congested midfield battle - we need to either create space, or use Newton and Samuels pace to force defences to drop and therefore create the space and time we need for the 2 or 3 touches to control the ball and get our heads up to find a pass.

My initial reaction was Jesus!

That's a lot of attacking players. I'd love to see it (to see what happened) but think that's a bit too radical.

The thing is though - its only a change of formation and 1 player (Ronnie for Samuel), but it is a radical change in approach - rather than the conservative 'can we hold them out', its a more positive 'can they stop us scoring' approach that was kind of promised by Sarll and Wallace.

We can always bring Ronnie or Martin on and revert to the 442 that we usually play should the game require it.

Its more about intent from the start, it is more positive and as you said the fans would love to see it

Statistics I have made up clearly show we are unlucky in not winning away. Similar statistics also show I am also due to win the lottery or get hit by a meteorite.

Me too. Every point in that post.

I'll be there, but I'll expect a poor performance, lack of any imagination and a point at best.

At least it doesn't look like being especially cold.

With my positive outlook I'm going for a win no matter what team and tactics DS goes with, law of averages says we must win again at some point.

I can understand your views, the away form has been ridiculous this season. But I have optimism, I like to think the players will come out and finally give us something to cheer about away from home, they’ll be worried about our forward line and what we did to them a month ago also.

I agree 100% about the tactics, I would too play 4-5-1 with King in the middle and Fraser partnering Wilko at the back. I would start Matty up top with Pett and Samuel supporting from either wing. I would bring Danny Newton on to add a bit of strength and pace in the second half.

TVC in the back 4. Wilmot and Wilko at CB. King in a midfield 5. Wont happen though.

Think we'll scrape a point with a late goal. 1-1

Edit: Basically what your 1st and last paragraphs say :)
